Bei der typischer Weise elektronisch erfolgenden Berechnung der Lage der verschiedenen Zuschnitte, dem Schnittmuster, wird eine in idealer Weise ausgebreitete Textilbahn angenommen. Bei der Realisierung des Zuschnittes ist es daher erforderlich, die die Musterung aufweisende Textilbahn sehr genau auszulegen und auszurichten. Hierzu ist auch heute noch außerordentlich viel Handarbeit erforderlich. Klassisch wird die Textilbahn auf einer Tischfläche einer Ausrichteinrichtung abgelegt und dort typisch von Hand hinsichtlich der Musterung ausgerichtet. Die ausgerichtete Lage wird dann einer Schneideinrichtung übergeben. Bei der Übergabe können Fehler auftreten, die die Ausrichtung wieder beeinträchtigen.
