Hierbei wird mittels einer Fern- und/oder Nahinfrarotkamera die Umgebung des Kraftfahrzeuges, insbesondere die Umgebung vor der Windschutzscheibe des Kraftfahrzeuges, aufgenommen und mittels einer Anzeige dargestellt. Zur besseren Erkennbarkeit kann hierbei ein zusätzlicher Infrarotscheinwerfer eingesetzt werden, der die Umgebung auch außerhalb der Reichweite der Scheinwerfer des Kraftfahrzeuges ausleuchten kann. Die bekannten Nightvisionsysteme weisen eine einfarbige Anzeige, insbesondere eine Schwarz/Weiß-Anzeige auf. Bei Umgebungsbedingungen, wie beispielsweise Nebel, starkem Schneefall oder Regen, bei der eine zusätzliche Sehinformation des Kraftfahrzeugführers besonders wichtig ist, ist die Darstellung der Umgebung auf der Anzeige kontrastarm, so dass ein Fahrer besondere Aufmerksamkeit auf die Anzeige verwenden muss, um Objekte, die für ihn gefährlich werden könnten, zu erkennen.
