Dass der Zusammenbau eines Brennstoffzellen-Stacks dabei mit hoher Prozessgeschwindigkeit und Prozesssicherheit durchführbar sein soll, ist praktisch selbstverständlich.by virtue of the relatively low electrical voltage that a single fuel cell has can deliver for technical Apply multiple fuel cells to a fuel cell block or fuel cell stack ("Stack") connected in series become. The electrical connection is via so-called interconnectors or bipolar plates. Especially in the case of a planar stack design take over the bipolar plates in addition to the electrical connection of the individual Cells in addition the task of fuel gas guidance and / or oxidizing gas supply to the electrodes of the fuel cell and the separation of the Fuel gases and oxidizing gases of neighboring cells. When gas-tight Assembly of the fuel single cells and other associated items to the fuel cell stack must in addition to the gas tightness a sufficient ensures electrical insulation in the edge area of the interconnectors be. An electrical connection between adjacent single cells may namely only over their cathode-electrolyte-anode units present while in the edge area of the interconnectors, via which the single cells to the Stack are assembled and thus, so to speak, a housing of the Stacks form or the component of a stack housing is and in which no cathode-electrolyte-anode unit is present is, must be no electrical contact, otherwise a the cathode-electrolyte-anode units immediate short circuit vorläge. On the other hand, the electrical contact between each other adjacent single cells in the area of the cathode-electrolyte-anode units preferably be low impedance. That the assembly of a fuel cell stack with it high process speed and process reliability be feasible should, is almost natural.
It is usual the assembly of a multicellular stack in single steps, wherein first the fuel single cells with the interposition of a suitable Sealing medium, wet applied in the edge region of the interconnectors will, on top of each other be stacked. Subsequently a heating up of the thus prepared stack takes place to an elevated operating temperature, whereby the required gas-tightness in the region of the sealing medium will be produced. While namely the usual Operating temperature of a stack of SOFC single cells is about 800 ° C, lie the softening temperatures of conventional Sealants in the form of glass solders at approx. 900 ° C and higher. With corresponding softening of the glass solders or general of the sealing medium then results in a gas-tight connection between adjacent Single cells, but with these conventional sealing media in first reaching the softening temperature a relatively high Volume shrinkage rate (of 50% and more) have. Therefore, must first a considerably larger amount be applied by sealing medium, as for filling the remaining at the elevated operating temperature after the described heating up Sealing gaps would be necessary. Since filled with the glass solder or sealing medium sealing gap with the volume shrinkage the sealant of course smaller, have adjacent single cells before heating on raised Operating temperature and thus at the original assembly at room temperature no contact with each other. The stack has after assembly at room temperature, but before the described heating so "excess", and decreases only after this heating up on his planned gage together.
This joining technique leads to a number of disadvantages. As described, the individual cells have no contact with each other during assembly. The gas-tightness, as well as the quality of the electrical contact is thus dependent on the uniform sinking of the entire structure. This requires extremely expensive and therefore extremely expensive quality assurance of all components (for example with regard to manufacturing tolerances of the upper and lower shells, flatness of the individual cells, etc.) The joining of the stack can not in the overall system, ie in total with additional components such as gas generators, heat exchangers, power electronics , Insulation, etc., installed, since the necessary space is not available. The stack has after assembly - as already mentioned - namely "excess", ie it is higher than in gas-tight joined state Thus, an intermediate step is required, namely the so-called "baking" of the sealing medium with an additional thermal treatment step, the increased assembly costs. The temperature distribution of a Vorrich a continuous furnace, to be extremely homogeneous, to ensure a uniform sinking of the structure. If this is not guaranteed, it can lead to imperfections in the seals and a consequence of this This can lead to uneven electrical contact in the area of the cathode-electrolyte-anode units, which leads to a loss of performance during operation of the fuel cell stack and, moreover, to an uneven temperature distribution In particularly unfavorable cases, the elevated temperatures which are necessary for the "baking" of a glass solder seal can lead to a pre-damage of the metallic components, for example to the formation of undesired oxide layers which cause a have insufficient electrical conductivity. Basically, the difference of the thermal expansions of the metallic and ceramic materials of the stack, which are designed for the smallest possible difference in operating temperature, exacerbated by the required for "baking" temperature increase, because the metallic components expand when the temperature increase more than the ceramic involved This increases the thermo-mechanical stresses of the material composites and can lead to the pre-damage of the ceramic functional layers.
One In contrast, improved manufacturing method for a fuel cell stack according to the preamble of the claim 1 show, is therefore an object of the present invention.
The solution this object is characterized in that the fuel cell stack already at the actual Assembling below room temperature and thus before drying the Sealing medium is essentially added to its final dimensions, including with regard to a secure seal either a sealing medium with very low Volume shrinkage used and introduced prior to assembly of the fuel cell stack or the sealing medium only after assembly of the fuel cell stack under overpressure in for the inclusion of the sealing medium provided cavities in the edge region the interconnector is introduced.
Also according to the joining technique proposed here the sealing medium becomes wet and wet thus flexible, i. not yet "baked", below room temperature introduced into the stack, but - deviating from the usual State of the art - here already mounted to final dimensions is or mounted on gauge block becomes. A collapse of the stack in connection with the "baking" of the sealing material, i.e. when heated to temperatures greater than the operating temperature the fuel cell, so now is not intended and does not take place. The stack can thus without intermediate steps directly into the surrounding Complete system to be mounted. A possibly still necessary "baking" of the sealing medium can also be installed already in the overall system.
According to a further proposal, the sealing medium can be introduced only after assembly of the stack, namely from the outside into suitable sealing cavities, which are released or formed when assembling the individual levels of the fuel cell stack. The stack can then be "dry" assembled and clamped in the sealing area to its final dimension, and then the sealing medium is pressed under pressure into the resulting cavity, in which case any setting of the finished stack during heating to operating temperature is precluded The sealing region can, for example. By providing surrounding the sealing contours surveys on the metal housing or on the sub stratfreien border area of the interconnectors are excluded. It is also possible here to connect several sealing principles with each other, so in addition to the sealing medium, the principle of the labyrinth seal. If the aforementioned elevations are, for example, not simply arranged but arranged in series several times, then a significant enlargement of the sealing width and thus also of the available area can be achieved.
A Possibility, to ensure the electrical resistance of the seal is to an additional Insulation component (eg an electrically non-conductive ceramic layer) introduce, the seal between the function of the electrical insulator the sealing surfaces the individual fuel cells quasi decreases. When using reactive solders is this inevitable otherwise over the metallic solder an electrical short circuit come about would.
Around one possible large-area, homogeneous electric Contacting between the reactive surfaces of adjacent ones To ensure single cells can in the area of the substrate during assembly below room temperature flexible contacting element can be used. If this element a pillow-like expression , it may during assembly any surface irregularities to compensate for the respective single cell. If this contacting element made with installation oversize is, so hereby also the resulting contact pressure within of the stack. The differences between the thermal expansion coefficient of the contacting elements on the one hand and the cell ceramics on the other hand for the maintenance of the Contact pressure (even after many rapid temperature changes) provide.
For the rest, can through the use of low sintering ceramic suspensions as Contact pastes a Ansintern, so an advantageous mechanical connection the metallic contacting element to the ceramic cathode be achieved. One more way is the use of highly heat-resistant materials for the contacting element, by remaining at their operating temperature of the fuel cell Spring stiffness on the contact pressure of the contacting element ensure the cathode.
