Abstract

The system has at least one deformation sensor (2), an evaluation and control unit and at least one protection system for protecting pedestrians and/or vehicle occupants that is triggered depending on information regarding the characteristics of an impact. Information about the collision region of an object can be acquired by the sensor and transferred to the evaluation and control unit, which uses it as a decision criterion as to whether the object is a pedestrian or not in order to trigger at least one protection system (4,5) depending on this.
