Use of magnesium cast alloys with small additions of beryllium It is known that magnesium cast alloys tend to form micro-holes which locally reduce the strength values and impermeability of the castings. Experience has shown that the micro-cavities occur more strongly, the wider the solidification interval, so that above all the well-known strength-wise important magnesium alloys with substantial contents of aluminum and possibly also zinc are affected, z. B. iL magnesium alloys with about 8% aluminum or with about 6% aluminum and about 3% zinc.
It used to be limited to the production of
Free of micro-voids and pressure-tight. Castings share the well-known magnesium alloy
about 3% aluminum and about 10/0: zinc should be used. But this alloy has
has a poor filling capacity and is only pressure-tight if it is a rough one
Has primary grain, the strength values of the alloy are relatively low. at
the well-known instability of the primary grain of magnesium alloys prepares the production
this alloy has particular difficulties, but only in practice
are difficult to control. As a result, it was later switched to for
the stated purpose aluminum-free, but zinc and cerium-containing magnesium alloys
to use. However, these alloys also have several disadvantages. Apart from that
from the fact that complete freedom from micro-voids is only achieved at levels of about 2%: Ger
and therefore the production of an alloy that can be used for the stated purpose
is expensive, the high cerium content already causes a noticeable decrease
the strength properties. Because the alloys also have a low silicon content
must have, as it normally only occurs when using the purest magnesium
is achieved, and, moreover, no aluminum: if they contain it, use is prohibited
of metal return of usual composition with contents of aluminum and silicon.
Magnesium alloys containing cerium are also not remeltable because the cerium is based on
Because of its reactivity with magnesium chloride, the common ingredient
of all refining salts, is removed by the washing process. Another well-known one
The proposal concerns Magn: esium alloys with up to 2% zirconium. and at least one
of the metals zinc and cadmium, with the contents of zinc and cadmium being useful
should not exceed the saturation limit for mixed crystal formation. Even
the last-mentioned alloys are necessarily aluminum-free, as it is known
Aluminum joins with zirconium in molten magnesium to form segregated compounds.
The present invention makes use of the known high percentage
Magnesium alloys with 3 to 10% aluminum, 0 to 4% zinc and 0.05 to 0.5% manganese
return. This is because it has been found that these alloys are free from micropipes
and produce pressure-tight castings with good strength properties and little scatter
can how they z. B. for engine and transmission housings are needed if you have them
Beryllium in amounts of 0.0005 to 0.02%, preferably 0.001 to 0.006%, is added.
The invention therefore relates to the use of alloys
from 3 to 10%: aluminum, 0 to 4% zinc, 0.05 to 0.5% manganese, the remainder magnesium, those
0.0005 to 0.02%, preferably 0.001 to 0.006%, beryllium has been added:
for the production of engine and transmission housings and all such castings
which, in addition to good strength properties, have little scatter and are free from micro-voids
and pressure tightness matters.
It is known that the flammability of molten magnesium and
the alloys of which can be largely reduced by adding beryllium, see above
that you can cast beryllium-containing magnesium alloys without sulfur and at
Such alloys can be cast with molding sand, which is poor in the known protective substances
Is sulfur, boric acid, ammonium fluoride and the like. After one but also after becoming known
the fire-retardant properties of the beryllium-containing magnesium alloys other
Ways for the production of pressure-tight castings had been taken, as above
executed, it was not obvious and rather the professional world had to be led away from the idea
be that just the beryllium-containing, on the alloy component aluminum
high-percentage and possibly also zinc-containing magnesium
Alloys
with a relatively wide solidification interval is particularly suitable and advantageous.
Can be used for the production of micropipe-free and pressure-tight
Would own castings. Furthermore, it could not be expected that the
Strength values in complicated chill castings from those used according to the invention
Alloys would have only a small scatter of about 2% compared to yours
Ten times this value when using the beryllium-free alloys.
The beryllium content of the alloys used according to the invention is conditional
although a small absolute decrease in strength. After one not yet reached
Processes belonging to the technology can easily be converted into portable
Limits are kept that the addition of beryllium following the one grain refinement
effecting treatment of the melt takes place.
The particular technical progress of the invention is based on
that on the one hand it is used to manufacture completely pressure-tight castings made of magnesium alloys
not the use of substantial amounts of expensive alloying agents such as zirconium
and cerium, and that on the other hand in the castings from those used according to the invention
Alloys with a high content of aluminum and possibly zinc through a heat treatment
the highest strength properties can be achieved, which is the case with the low-percentage
Alloys is not possible.
