Patentirt im Deutschen Reiche vom 14. September 1897 ab.Patented in the German Empire on September 14, 1897.
There are many attempts to bring pure carbolic acid into solid form for disinfection purposes been made; compare those in German Patent Nos. 44528 and 55624 described procedure. According to patent specification No. 44528, carbolic acid is melted, brought to crystallization by cooling and stirring, the crystal pulp becomes Made as anhydrous as possible, mixed with a tenth of its weight of pure boric acid and finely grated. In this way you get a loose, snow-like product, which can be pressed into shapes. According to patent specification No. 55624, carbolic acid vapors ■ passed over heated boric acid, whereby by sublimation of the carbolic acid and the Boric acid in suitable templates a snow-shaped distillate is obtained.
However, these procedures have not proven themselves in practice because of the great hygroscopicity the carbolic acid was not abolished, but always stood in the way of the production of durable tablets.
A means was now sought to be found, which, added to the carbolic acid, by striving to bind moisture, which prevents carbolic acid from disintegrating and which of the carbolic acid can be added at the same time in any amount, without to have a detrimental effect on their clear solubility and their effect as a disinfectant. The less watery compounds of boric acid were recognized as such substances are solid bodies and tend to absorb water in ordinary boric acid to pass, d. H. are able to bind existing moisture without themselves to dissolve. The less watery compounds of boric acid are by simple Melting common boric acid is easy to obtain. Since the boric acid is about 50 pCt. Contains crystal water, 40 g of boric acid were melted and in the first experiment brought to a weight of about 20 g. Then 80 g of crystallized carbolic acid were obtained entered into the molten boric acid and mixed with this. Since the boric acid at Melts 100 ° C., at 150 ° in pyroboric acid passes over and turns into its anhydride when glowing, it could not be determined which less watery compounds were present, but it is to be assumed that the resulting 20 g of low-water compounds a mixture of metaboric acid, pyroboric acid and boric anhydride. The cooled in a suitable drying device Mixture of the molten boric acid and carbolic acid produced a crystalline mass which could easily be ground to powder, and was so stable in the air that it was it could be made into tablets.
The observation on the first attempt at mixing molten boric acid and Carbolic acid, however, had taught that in the union of the two bodies in the given way due to the high temperature of the molten boric acid Loss of carbolic acid due to
Vapors developed (up to 25 pct.). As a result, the further attempts in Made in a way that the molten boric acid, as stated above, is powdered after cooling and then mixed with the molten carbolic acid. This procedure gave as well as the addition of pure Boric anhydride to molten carbolic acid the desired result; so it was proved that both by adding a mixture of partially dehydrated boric acid compounds, as well as by adding pure boric anhydride to crystallized carbolic acid a preparation can be obtained which is suitable for making durable tablets is.
