Description
The invention relates to a method to scale similarity measures for a biometric Method and an arrangement and a program product for executing the Process.
Typische Biometrien
sind z.B. Sprecher-, Unterschrift-, Handgeometrie-, Fingerabdruck-,
Iris- oder Gesichtserkennung. Biometrische Verfahren sind beispielsweise
in WO 98/24051, WO 98/25228, WO 98/50880, WO 99/08223 in Form von
dynamischen Unterschriftsverifikationen, in
In all biometric processes are reference and test characteristics via the associated reference and Test data compared with each other and decided based on similarity measures, whether they come from the same user. Similarity measures are for example distances (Distances), so-called costs, between reference and test features or patterns or so-called scores, which are a measure of the probability of the reference and test features by the same user come. The range of costs is between zero and one certain maximum value, with small costs high similarity and large costs little similarity correspond. The scores are in the range between zero and one. Scores of one stand for maximum and scores of zero for minimal match. There are two different cost / score distributions: The distributions of the originals to be recognized (“genuine distribution ") and that of the counterfeiters (English "imposter distribution "), which was rejected should be.
- - Goodness of the original: ability of the user to be able to reproduce the reference
- - Variance in the type of test data (e.g. signature length for signature verification, password for speaker verification)
- - goodness of fakes
- - algorithm of cost calculation
With all of these custom Distribution of costs / scores a global threshold for a biometry for relatively poor results or high error rates (False acceptance rate FAR, false rejection rate FRR, equal error rate EER).
To minimize these error rates, the calculated user-dependent costs / scores can be user-specific normalize to an entire or common range of values so that continues to use a global threshold for this biometry can be. The use of user-specific threshold values corresponds in principle also this method, whereby here the normalization parameters are contained in the threshold values or their calculation. In this Case instead of the user-dependent standardization parameters and a global threshold the user-specific threshold values saved.
Goal of a user-specific cost / score standardization it is like this, the cost / score distributions of the originals and the counterfeiters as good as possible to map each other to the originals and counterfeiters through a global threshold as much as possible to be able to separate from each other. In practice, however, only the costs / scores of the originals disposal a practicable standardization can only be achieved with these values carried out become. Until now, cost standardization, for example by Brunelli, R. and Falavigna, D. "Person Identification Using Multiple Cues", IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, Vol. 17, No. 10, 1995, by mean shift and / or normalization made by the standard deviation.
abgebildet:

K standardized : standardized user costs,
K user: unnormalized user costs
K users: mean value of the unnormalized user costs,
K global : average of the standardized user costs.
The normalization of the scores can be done analogously carried out become.

Streuung bzw. Standardabweichung der unnormierten Benutzerkosten. When shifting the mean and scaling with standard deviation, the costs are made mean-free and standardized by the spread of the respective user costs: With
σ user : spread or standard deviation of the non-standardized user costs.
Here too the standardization of the Scores performed analogously become.
Examples show that with a Normalization by shifting the cost or score mean values the originals are less good at improving error rates than with an additional Standardization through the standard deviation. However, in practice frequently The standard deviations are only very few reference characteristics available less reliable than the averages.
The invention is based on the object develop a procedure for scaling the similarity measures, in which the disadvantages described are avoided.
This task is accomplished through a multimodal biometric method, an arrangement and a program product with the characteristics of independent Expectations solved.
In the process, the similarity measures are compared to a Average scaling scaled. To do this, first of all the averages of the costs of all users to a common global mean of similarity measures of all User charged. The scaling factor when averaging is then this global mean of the similarity measures of all Users divided by the mean of the similarity measures of each User. The scaled similarity measures of each User finally surrender from the multiplication of the unscaled similarity measures of the respective User with this scaling factor.
On the calculation of the mean values the cost of all users at a common global average the similarity measures of all User can also be dispensed with, as this is scaling only scaled the mean from one to the mean for all users. In In this case, the calculation and saving of the common global mean.
For the inventive method to scale similarity measures thus only the mean values of the similarity measures are used to be, not the standard deviations. Nevertheless, As shown below using an example, the error rates achieved good results.
The similarity measures of the originals not by shifting, but by scaling the mean values mapped onto each other. The standard deviation is not in the Scaling included. The process is therefore less susceptible to a small number of for the scaling is available standing similarity measures. Also saved you look at the calculation and storage of standard deviations. The method according to the invention is therefore less expensive, on the one hand, since the standard deviation is not must be calculated and leads also at lower error rates than those previously used.
No further conversions the scaled similarity measures, so receives similarity measures already standardized according to the above method. This is especially for the comparison and offsetting of different similarity measures, for example with multimodal biometrics, advantageous.
Preferably included or are the similarity measures cost and / or scores.
An arrangement that is set up is to carry out one of the described methods, for example by appropriate programming and setting up a computer or a computer system.
A program product for a data processing system, that contains software code sections, with which one of the described methods on the data processing system accomplished can be through suitable implementation of the method in a programming language and translation execute in code executable by the data processing system. The Software code sections are stored for this. It is under a program product understood the program as a tradable product. It can be in any form, such as paper, a computer readable disk or about a Network distributed.
Dabei zeigtOther essential advantages and Features of the invention result from the description of an exemplary embodiment based on the drawing. It shows
The scaling method according to the invention of similarity measures in form of costs / scores uses the mean values of the similarity measures of the originals, about the similarity measures to each other map.
It is explained using the example of the standardization of costs. The mean values of the costs of all users are initially offset against a common global cost mean. The normalization factor of the costs of the respective user is then the global mean of the costs of all users divided by the mean of the costs of the respective user:
Have tests with sample biometrics demonstrated that this method gives better results than the one above presented normalization method by shifting the mean and / or standardization through the standard deviation. Even with very little available to a few standing references, which are used exclusively for standardization error rates are very low due to this procedure reached.

For this exemplary biometry will cost the originals and that of the forger with the different methods presented (mean shift, Mean shift and scaling due to standard deviation, Mean scaling). Only the costs are used for standardization the originals used, which are used for reference formation (in the so-called Enrollment) were used. Then it is examined which Error rates according to the standardization for global thresholds in the set different procedures.
The equal error rates EER without standardization and with the different standardization procedures are from the table read.
The Receiver Operating Characteristic (the ROC diagram) for these cases is shown in the following diagram 11. It has for curve 1 no normalization took place, for curve 2 normalization with the Mean shift, for Curve 3 a normalization with the mean shift and scaling with standard deviation and for Curve 4 a normalization with the mean scaling. Curve 5 is the EER line.
Generate all standardization processes a smaller EER than without standardization. The standardization presented here generated by the mean scaling the lowest and therefore best EER values. It can be seen from the ROC diagram that this Method with all FAR values better or at least equally good FRR values like the standardization methods used so far.
The method of combining mean shift and scaling through the standard deviation does similarly good Improvements regarding the error rates, however, this method is extremely dependent on of goodness the calculated standard deviations. Possible outliers at a few reference patterns, which is regularly the practice in practice Case is, act much stronger on the standard deviations than on the mean and can then lead to high error rates.
