Description
It is known that acetaldehyde dimethyl acetal, also called dimethyl acetal, can be obtained in that acetaldehyde or acetylene is reacted with methanol in the presence of catalysts. The implementation mixtures however, contain raw materials that have not yet been converted and possibly water. Working up such crude mixtures by distillation does not lead to pure dimethyl acetal. on in this way, only an azeotropic mixture of dimethyl acetal and methanol can be obtained, the methanol content of which is over 20%. Such mixtures have therefore been worked up in such a way that that the methanol by adding concentrated aqueous salt solutions or alkali metal hydroxides separated and the dimethyl acetal by fractional distillation of that taken up during the treatment Freed water and residual methanol fractions. This procedure is cumbersome, associated with losses of dimethyl acetal and uninteresting for the technology for economic reasons.
According to another known method, the raw mixture is extracted with a liquid. z. B. with water, which dissolves the acetal less, the byproducts on the other hand: better. This procedure has the disadvantage that the phase formation required to separate off the extractant is time-consuming and approximately pure acetal can only be obtained by a series of extractions. aside from that This process is: insofar less suitable for the production of methanol-free dimethyl acetal, since this acetal dissolves in water in considerable quantities.
It has been found that methanol-free acetaldehyde dimethylacetal from methanol-containing, in particular technical-grade, acetaldehyde-dimethylacetal mixtures can gain without the disadvantages mentioned if the mixtures, expediently after concentration up to the azeotrope, distilled with the help of a column and during the distillation in the column introduces water. To carry out the process, z. B. the dimethylacetal-methanol mixture in vapor form in the lower part of a column, e.g. B. a packed column, a, while at the same time at a higher point water, expediently in fine distribution, in the Column is injected or injected.
Die mit Vorteil verwendete Wassermenge hängt von der Apparatur und dem Durchsatz ab und läßt sich durchThe water laden with methanol collects at the bottom of the column, where it may be drawn off can be. The amount of water to be introduced should be large enough to completely absorb the methanol to remove from the dimethyl acetal. The amount of water used to advantage depends on the Apparatus and the throughput and lets itself through

Vorversuche leicht ermitteln. Easily determine preliminary tests. In general, it is sufficient to consider the volume ratio of the distillate decrease to add water between about 1: 1 and 1: 3.
The process can be carried out either continuously or batchwise. In batch operation it is recommended, in particular, with a volume ratio of the distillate decrease to Water delivery of 1: 1 to work, since in this way the volume of the still practically unchanged remain. It can, for. B. in a continuous work process first the methanol-free acetal and then, with the water supply switched off, the methanol enriched in the sump in anhydrous Form can be obtained. The water can be fed in at the top of the column. Appropriately, however, leads the water at a lower point, z. B. in the upper third of the column, but above the supply of the mixture to be treated. This has the advantage that that escapes at the top of the column Mixture only contains a few percent water. These small amounts of carried water, mostly between 3 and 3.5%, correspond to the aceotropic ratios. You can use desiccants, such as sodium or potassium hydroxide, can be easily removed. If you want something special for certain purposes Obtain pure, methanol-free dimethyl acetal, it is sometimes advantageous to use the distillate after Distill drying fine. This not only reduces the water content to around 0.002%, but also it also distills off the methanol, which is occasionally still up to about 1.5% entrained, in the forerun.
