Foreign elements is prevented.

The covering pastes used so far have a number of technical and practical disadvantages

entsprechen. The method according to the invention is characterized in that before the thermochemical

The good diffusion barrier effect of the method according to the invention is essentially based on
the small pore size of the deposited oxide ceramic films, which are in the nanometer
area moves, which results in a correspondingly high sintering activity, so that already for
Temperatures from 600 ° C a complete sealing sintering of the layer can be achieved, whereby
local access of foreign elements such as carbon, oxygen, nitrogen or boron to the
Component surface is prevented.
So
beobachtet.A fundamental difficulty of ceramic coatings lies in the different thermal expansion behavior between the layer and the substrate. The coefficient of expansion of most oxide ceramics is significantly lower than that of the substrates made of iron-based alloys. For example, the expansion coefficient of Al 2 O 3 is α ≈ 8. 10 -6 K -1 clearly below the typical chrome-nickel steels with α ≈ 19. 10 -6 K -1 and also under the unalloyed or low-alloyed steels of approx. 14. 10 -6 K -1 . First of all, one would expect the ceramic films to come under considerable tensile stresses when heated, since the substrate expands more than the ceramic film due to the higher expansion coefficient. However, our investigations show that the difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion does not play a significant role in the process according to the invention, since the ceramization of the organometallic polymer films only takes place at temperatures above 500 ° C. The sintering of the initially highly porous films only reaches a significant speed from 600 ° C. In the gel film stage as well as in the highly porous ceramic state, the ductility of the films is sufficient to reduce the mechanical residual stresses caused by deformation. As a result, the films remain almost stress-free even when heated to temperatures of 1000 ° C, so that no crack formation due to different expansion coefficients is to be expected during isothermal heat treatment in the temperature range between 500 and 1000 ° C. This property represents an essential special feature of the method according to the invention. Only when the ceramic films come under residual pressure, because the metallic substrate then contracts more than the ceramic coating. When cooling or even quenching the coated samples, the formation of layer defects was observed until the coatings completely flaked off.

By applying a polymer dispersion based on zirconium tetra-n-propylate, acetyl acetone and 2-propanol before the thermochemical surface layer treatment, the diffusion of foreign elements, especially carbon, into the surface layer of iron-based alloys can be successfully prevented . The preparation of such a polymer dispersion is shown below:
For every 1 mole of zirconium tetra-n-propylate: Zr (O n c 3 H 7 ) 4
1 to 10 moles of water and
0.5 to 4 moles of acetylacetone: CH 3 (CO) CH (CO) CH 3 as well
5 to 30 moles of 2-propanol: (CH 3 ) 2 CHOH.
To prepare the organometallic polymer dispersion, the liquid zirconium tetra-n-propylate is first dissolved in half of the total 2-propanol and carefully stirred with a magnetic stirrer. The total amount of acetylacetone is dissolved in a second beaker together with the water in the other half of the 2-propanol. The acetylacetone-water-2-propanol solution is then added to the ZTP-2-propanol solution with constant stirring. Instead of acetylacetone, other β-diketones can also be used. The exact sol composition is to be selected depending on the application and type of application. Similar sol systems are also described in the literature [RC Mehrotra ,; Polymetallic alkoxides - Precursors for ceramics, Symp. On better ceramics through chemistry III, Mat. Res. Symp. Proc. Vol. 121 (1988) 81-92 or M. Shane, ML Mecartney, Sol-gel synthesis of zirconia barrier coatings, J. Mat. Sci. 25 (1990) 1537-1544 and G. De, A. Chatterjee, D. Ganguli, Zirconia fibers from the zirconium n-propoxide-acetylacetone-water-isopropanol system, J. Mat. Sci. Let. 9 (1990) 845-846]. The susceptibility of the coatings to cracking can be reduced by adding polyethylene glycol or methyl cellulose. After the sol has been applied by dip coating or brushing, the liquid sol film becomes solid plastic-like gelim after a short drying. If the component treated in this way is subsequently subjected to a thermochemical boundary layer treatment by carburizing, nitriding or nitrocarburizing, the applied organometallic polymer film is transformed into an oxide-ceramic, dense ZrO 2 film, which then successfully prevents the diffusion of carbon and / or nitrogen into the boundary layer .

Vol. 8 No. 12 (1993) 3151-3157 sowie B. E. Yoldas, Alumina sol preparation from alkoxides;
Ceramic Bulletin Voll 54, No. 3 (1975).
The diffusion of carbon into the outer layer of iron-based alloys can also be prevented by applying a sol based on aluminum tri-isopropylate:
Add 1 mol of aluminum tri-isopropylate powder: Al (OCH (CH 3 ) 2 ) 3
200 to 600 moles of water as well
0.4 to 0.8 moles of nitric acid: HNO 3 .
The powdered aluminum tri-isopropylate is crushed with a mortar and mixed with half the total amount of water. Then 0.4 to 0.8 molar parts of dilute nitric acid are added. This solution is kept at least 70 ° C. with stirring. After stirring for a day, the remaining amount of water is added to the sol. Here too, the exact sol composition must be selected depending on the application and the type of application. Comparable sol systems can be found at: Th. Hübert, F. Bauroth, B. Oertel, S. Svoboda; Alumina - Sol / Gel protective layers on metals; Progress report of the German Ceramic Society (1995) 10 (4) 60-66 and J.-W. Lee, Ch.-W Won, B.-S. Chun, HY Sohn, Dip Coating of Alumina Films by the Sol-Gel Method, J. Mater. Res. Vol. 8 No. 12 (1993) 3151-3157 and BE Yoldas, Alumina sol preparation from alkoxides; Ceramic Bulletin Voll 54, No. 3 (1975). This sol is usually applied to the component to be thermochemically treated by dip coating or brushing. As could be shown by a few experiments, this sol system is also suitable for electrophoretic layer deposition. For this, the steel substrate to be coated was immersed in the sol. A voltage of a few volts was applied for a few minutes between the substrate, which was connected as the cathode, and a counter anode made of X4CrNi18-10 stainless steel. In this way, a few micrometer thick, crack-free gel films could be deposited. During the subsequent thermochemical boundary layer treatment, in particular carburizing, nitriding or nitrocarburizing, the gel films deposited using the various methods transform into dense oxide-ceramic Al 2 O 3 films, which then locally prevent the diffusion of carbon or nitrogen into the boundary layer.

Schmidt, Synthesis of an alumina coating from chelated aluminum alkoxides; Journal of Non-
Crystalline Solids 121 (1990) 329-333].
A polymer dispersion based on aluminum tri-sec-butoxide in 2-propanol was prepared as follows:
For every 1 mole of aluminum tri-sec-butoxide: Al (O sec C 4 H 9 ) 3
2 to 4 moles of distilled water,
1 to 4 moles of acetylacetone as well
8 to 16 moles of 2-propanol: (CH 3 ) 2 CHOH.
The aluminum tri-sec-butoxide was dissolved in 2-propanol and then the corresponding total amount of acetylacetone was added. This solution was stirred for approx. 30 min at room temperature. The distilled water was then added and the mixture was also stirred for about 30 minutes. The precipitate was dissolved by adding concentrated nitric acid, so that a clear sol was formed. Similar sol systems are known from the literature [R. Nass, H. Schmidt, Synthesis of an alumina coating from chelated aluminum alkoxides; Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids 121 (1990) 329-333]. The sol is usually applied to the component to be thermochemically treated by dip coating and, after brief drying, changes into a plastic-like gel film. During the thermochemical boundary layer treatment (carburizing, nitriding or nitrocarburizing), the gel film transforms into an oxide-ceramic Al 2 O 3 film, which locally prevents the diffusion of carbon and nitrogen into the boundary layer.

the samples were hardened by quenching, starting from a quenching temperature
of 840 ° C in an oil bath with a temperature of 60 ° C. This or similar hardening process
correspond to the state of the art and have long been carried out industrially [F. W. Eyseil,

The structure of the samples was examined by light microscopy after case hardening by grinding (etching 3% alk. HNO 3 ) and the hardness depth profile was measured. The edge carbon content (at 0.05 mm depth) was determined using optical emission spectroscopy (OES). The results of 17CrNiMo6 samples are presented here as examples. The measured hardness depth profile of the uncoated reference sample showed an edge hardness of over 800 HV1 while the edge hardness of the coated sample with 550 HV1 was only slightly above the core hardness of 500 HV1. The marginal carbon content of the uncoated reference sample was 0.87% with a hardening depth of 1.0 mm, while the marginal carbon content of the coated sample was only 0.29%. That is, the coating described almost completely prevented the diffusion of carbon into the 17CrNiMo6 substrates. The metallographic cut in Figure 1 also confirms that the diffusion of carbon can be prevented locally with the methods described in the exemplary embodiments. The bright areas of the sample in Figure 1 correspond to the carburized areas that have a martensitic structure due to the hardening. The dark-etchable areas, on the other hand, show a low-carbon ferritic structure, which was not carburized.
