Charakteristik des bekannten Standes der TechnikCharacteristic of the known state of the art
The vacuum arc evaporation is a production process of hard material layers, which allows the deposition of adherent and the respective use of adapted layers. Within this process, the cathode acts as the source of a metal vapor plasma. The composition, structure and temperature of the cathode surface significantly influence the quality of the coating. In particular, these parameters act on the emission of macroscopic particles of the cathode material from the immediate area of action of the cathode spot. The extent of the macroparticle component is determined by the electron work function, the melting temperature and the thermal conductivity of the cathode material, as well as the cathode drop and the energy conversion coefficient for the energy input into the cathode.
By means of suitable cathode materials, the proportion of macroparticles in the total erosion product of the cathode can be considerably reduced. For this purpose, on the one hand refractory metals of the 4th to 6th subgroup of the Periodic Table of the Elements suitable, but also alloys of these metals with elements or compounds which are characterized by a much lower electron work function (VM Amasov et al, "electrode materials based on refractory metals" , Metallurgija, Moscow 1976).
The application of the vacuum arc evaporation for the deposition of hard material layers requires a restriction of the cathode materials to the materials necessary for the specific application. Since here the nitrides, oxides, carbides and their mixtures of the elements of the 4th to 6th subgroup of the periodic table dominate, there is a subset between the elements suitable as a cathode material and the metallic components of the layer material of hard material layers.
Improvements in the wear and heat resistance of hard coatings have recently been improved by the deposition of bi-and-nitridic nitrides, e.g. TiAIN, TiBN or TiAIZrN achieved by magnetron sputtering. The deposition of these and similar materials is in principle also possible with the aid of vacuum arc evaporation by the erosion of alloyed or sintered cathodes. However, because the macroparticle component significantly affects the quality of the coating, the alloying elements, in addition to the film-side effects, must simultaneously have a reducing effect on the macroparticle component emitted by the cathode. This has hitherto been achieved by the use of alloyed and sintered titanium cathode materials, and for reasons of macroparticle reduction, only alloying elements with significantly lower electron work function compared to titanium (electron work 4.65 eV), such as aluminum (4.2 eV) and zirconium (3, 93 eV) can be used (DE-OS 3731127). In this case, the proportions of the alloying elements were given with values of up to 40 atomic%.
Ziel der ErfindungObject of the invention
It is the object of the invention to provide hard material layers with high quality vacuum arc evaporation properties for a wide range of applications.
Darlegungen des Wesens der ErfindungExplanations of the nature of the invention
The invention has the object of producing hard material layers of different composition by means of vacuum arc evaporation and thereby to ensure that the macroparticulate emission of the cathode material is reduced and the layer properties are improved.
According to the invention, the object is achieved by using as the cathode material metals of the 4th to 6th subgroup of the Periodic Table of the Elements, which have a purity of at least 98 atomic%, elemental or as a mixture with a boron content up to 30 atomic% in alloyed or sintered Form to be used. The use of boron as an additive for the cathode material has surprisingly shown that, although boron is one of the elements having comparable electron work function to titanium, the macroparticle emission is significantly reduced and boron-titanium hard coatings by vacuum arc evaporation with very good wear and hardness properties can be produced. Taking into account the known experimental and theoretical work in the field, boron has hitherto been excluded for these purposes.
