Description
Dio DE-OS 3625506 discloses βίηο electrode having a number of substantially horizontal, rectangular openings, donon bridge or od flag parts are assigned. Also, this electrode can not prevent the formation of a relatively large gas bubble portion in the space between the electrode and the membrane.
The object of the invention is the development of an electrolysis cell with gas formation at the anode and cathode, which ensures a structurally simple design increased efficiency of the electronic process.
In particular, it is an object of the invention to develop an electrolytic cell with gas formation at the anode and cathode, preferably in the common electrolyte, which has significantly reduced ohmic power losses, and has sufficient gastrennenda properties, by the use of separating membranes for certain applications , Diaphragmen or the like. Can be dispensed between anode and cathode. At the same time, the gas bubble loading of the electrolyte in the reaction space, i. be significantly reduced in the space between the anode and cathode, even with increased current density.
This object is achieved orfindungsgemäß according to the features of claim 1.
Preferably, the electrode torques are thin lamellae, tapes or foils having a thickness of up to 3 times a mean gas bubble peel diameter.
The bubble peel diameter is the diameter of a bubble removing from its formation nuclei under the given real process conditions in an electrolytic cell of the type according to the invention. As a gas bubble removing from its nucleation, the one which moves on the surface of the electrode as a result of the adhesion should also be considered. Also, the distance of the facing end faces of the anode and cathode corresponds to at least three times the average bubble clearance diameter. The elements laterally delimiting the electrodes and the lower end of the electrodes have at most one gap which causes the capillary effect with respect to the inner wall of the cell body. In the upper cell area, the electrodes are sealed gas-tight, so that mixing of the ascending in the degassing of the electrolysis cell gases is verhindort.
The inventive solution ensures that the capillary action of the electrodes, starting from the area between the electrode elements, also affects the gas bubbles formed on the (mostly rounded) end faces and even sucks into the capillary gap when there is a gap between the electrode and a membrane was left. The width of the electrode elements is preferably substantially greater than their thickness and is preferably at least the TOfache the width of the capillary gap. As a result, a two-dimensionally acting capillary system is created in the electrode, which prevents the introduction of turbulence from the degassing space of the electrolyte into the reaction space between the electrodes or between the electrode and the membrane. An influence or disturbance of the bubble formation process and the bubble transport into the capillary gap is thus excluded. The gas transport through the electrode is directional, preferably transversely to the electrode plane, over the only very short distance corresponding width of the electrode elements. The reason for this is the considerable relative increase in volume in the reaction space as a result of the bubble formation process. This leads there to an increase in pressure and displacement reaction. To the same extent as the gas is forced out of the reaction space and the electrode, electrolyte flows through the capillary gap turbulence-free to -Jen reactive surfaces of the electrode. The high electrolyte exchange prevents the depletion of the electrolyte even in its boundary layer, since the liquid transport takes place directly on the electrode surface due to the capillary forces. The characteristic flow conditions in the capillary gap prevent as far as possible a vertical movement of the gas bubbles.
In order to prevent coagulation of gas bubbles, which occur at oppositely poled electrodes, it is preferable to provide at least a distance corresponding to 3 times the bubble peel diameter between the electrodes. This measure counteracts contamination of the gas biases rising in the degassing spaces and the formation of mixed gas in the reaction space. The coagulation of gas bubbles is the main cause of the formation of mixed gas.
An advantageous development of the invention uses a dielectric, electrolyte-resistant spacer element between the anode and the cathode, which may in particular have the structure of a network, of honeycombs or of large-mesh fabric. The spacer guaranteed according to its thickness, the short-circuit-proof fixation of the anode and cathode at a small distance. The high flexibility of the mechanically strong load-bearing electrode structure ensures uniform electrode spacing on all sides.
In addition, the reaction space is divided by the spacer into a plurality of small reaction cells.
Flow-related disturbances and the formation of mixed gas can practically no longer occur.
The invention provides a cell structure which divides the electrolytic cell hydraulically by appropriately active electrodes (capillary gap electrodes) into a common reaction space and separate degassing spaces. The connection between the reaction space between the anode and cathode and the Entgasungsräumen is formed solely by capillary gaps, so that no flow-related disturbances may occur due to the electrolyte transport, which could possibly lead to the detachment of gas bubbles from the electrode reaction surface and the migration of the gas bubbles in the reaction space.
Further, advantageous embodiments of Erfindungsgagenstandes are set forth in the remaining claims.
Es stellen darThe invention will be explained in more detail with reference to an embodiment and the figures. It represents
Fig. 1: Anode und Kathode einer Elektrolysezelle mit zwischenliegendem Distanzelement (M: ca. 1:1) Fig. 2: einen Querschnitt einer erfindungsgemäßen Elektrolysezelle mit Kapillarspaltelektroden Fig. 3: einen vergrößerten Ausschnitt A einer Kapillarspaltelektrode nach Fig. 1.1: anode and cathode of an electrolysis cell with intermediate spacer element (M: approx. 1: 1) FIG. 2: a cross section of an electrolysis cell according to the invention with capillary gap electrodes FIG. 3: an enlarged section A of a capillary gap electrode according to FIG.
It has in this embodiment, no spacer element between the anode and cathode, but to illustrate the path of the gas bubbles 6 and the gas bubble distribution a relatively large electrode spacing and wide degassing 10,11. One of the most important prerequisites for the effect and functioning of the electrolysis cell is the arrangement and construction of the anode and cathode as capillary gap electrodes 8.
Unter Ausbildung von Kathode und Anode als Elektroden, deren Elektrodenelernente 1,2,3,4,5 voneinander unter Bildung eines die Kapillarwirkung hervorrufenden Kapillarspaltes 4 angeordnet sind, verwirklicht die Elektrolysezelle einen Zellenaufbau, derWith formation of the cathode and anode as electrodes whose electrode elements 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 are arranged apart from one another to form a capillary gap 4 which causes the capillary action, the electrolysis cell realizes a cell structure which
The connections between dom reaction space 9 and the Entgasungsraumen 10,11 are ι exclusively by Kapillarspalte 4 bildild, so that by the electrolyte transport koine flow-related disturbances may occur otherwise possibly for detaching gas bubbles from the electrode reaction surface and their migration into the reaction space ö between the Capillary gap electrodes 8 could lead into it.
Each Kapillarspaltolektrodo 8 is constructed of mutually parallel Eloktrodenelementen 1 whose thickness 3 and 4 distance from each other by one or two orders of magnitude lower than in known electrodes. The thickness 3 of the elements 1, which may be bands, foils, lamellae or the like, is at most 3 times the mean bubble peel diameter. Between the elements 1 a Kapillarspalt causing the capillary effect is left. The fixation of the elements I to each other can be done for example by a plurality of elements 1 penetrating wires. Between the elements 1 can be arranged on the wires spacers to ensure the Kapillarspaltes 4. These measures allow the easy provision of a transportable and mountable capillary gap electrode 8 defined in its width.
Particularly economical is the production of elements 1 of glass-metallic foil strips, which were produced by the melt-spinning process. They have smooth surfaces and edges and usually have a thickness 3 of 20 (Jm to 100μιη on.The preferred range of element thickness is around 40pm, the Breita 5 of the bands is about 5mm.When using about 40 elements 1 per centimeter an average capillary gap 4 of 0.2 mm in width. An electrode 8 made of a plurality of very flexible (individual) elements 1 is in the described dense packing a mechanically highly resilient and yet completely conformable to a flat surface structures These surfaces do not have to be set high requirements with regard to evenness, distortion, etc.
Fig. 1 shows an anode and a cathode with zwischenliegondem spacer element 7. The Kapillarspaltelektrodenstruktur allows a large area a constant and small electrode spacing, which corresponds to the thickness of the spacer element 7. In addition, the conformability of this electrode structure ensures that damage to the spacer element 7 is prevented. 3 shows an enlarged scale section of the capillary gap electrode 8. The elements 1 used have a thickness 3 of about 30 pm and a width 5 of about 5 mm. The gap 4 between the elements 1 corresponds to about 200μιη. The highlighted areas 2 of the elements 1 (see Fig. 3) represent the width with high electrolytic reactivity. Their f specific turnover corresponds approximately to that on the faces of the elements 1. These highly reactive areas 2, which are significantly involved, extend transversely to the electrode plane at a depth which corresponds approximately to the width of the gap 4. For better illustration, the width of the gap 4 was stretched 3 times compared to the thickness 3 and width 5 of the elements 1.
The high number of elements 1 of the electrode 8 (about 40 to 50 elements 1 per cm) represents a high degree of homogenization of the electrode surface in comparison with the known prior art. Associated with this is an adequate equalization of the electric field and the current density loading. Consequently, an overload (and thus premature wear) of the electrocatalytic coating is avoided. Darübor has also succeeded in increasing the area involved in the reaction to a value greater than the construction area. Under favorable conditions, the ratio of active reaction area to construction area may be around 2.
Fig.3) befinden sich im Einflußbereich des Kapillarspaltes 4. The gas bubbles 6 (see Fig. 3) formed at the end surfaces and the reactive surfaces 2 of the elements 1 are located in the area of influence of the capillary gap 4. As a result of the formation of gas bubbles, a pressure build-up occurs in the reaction space 9 which preferably transversely causes the gas transport represents the electrode plane and simultaneously causes an increase in Eloktrolytepegeis in the degassing 11. In Fig.3, the path of a gas bubble 6 through the capillary gap electrode 8 is shown. To the same extent, the electrolyte is exchanged between the degassing spaces 11 and the reaction space 9. It follows that the smaller the (narrower) the reaction space 9 (the electrode gap) is the more intense the electrolyte exchange.
The gases drawn off from the degassing chambers 10, 11 of the electrolysis cell have a very high degree of purity; it is comparable to that obtained in membrane cells. Gas bubbles, which nevertheless remove from the capillary gap electrode 8 and nine-migrate into the reaction space 9, lead to an insignificant mixing gas formation. These bubbles can not only lead to contamination of the Roingases, since they would coagulate before reaching the counter electrode with the bubbles formed there. Their bubble diameter would then be too large for transport through a capillary gap 4 of the capillary gap electrode 8 or in the sealing area to the housing wall. The separation of the pure gases in the upper cell area is carried out by one or more foreclosures 12,13, which are submerged below the liquid level. When advancing a spacer element 7, it is expedient to seal the intended area for gas-tight foreclosure. The network, fabric or honeycomb-structured spacer elements 7 no longer permit mixed gas formation. The particularly uniform structuring of the capillary gap electrodes 8 leads to a high degree of purity of the resulting gases.
