Abstract
FigurThe arrangement relates to the measurement of biomass concentrations in fermentors. According to the invention, in a fluid container containing a measuring probe with an open optical measuring chamber for determining the biomass concentration, the measuring probe is surrounded by a tube which stands on the container bottom and has an opening at the bottom and is also open at the top. As a result of the chimney effect, the probe umstroemt from bottom to top, whereby disturbing gas bubbles, which significantly falsify the measurement of the particle concentration, are kept as far as possible from the probe. figure
Description
The invention relates to the measurement of biomass concentrations in fermentors. But it can also be applied in general for the measurement of particle concentrations.
In addition to known methods for determining the particle concentration in liquids, in which the intensity of a transmitted luminous flux and / or a scattered light stream is measured and have the disadvantage that they are not selective with respect to the particles to be measured and often occurring gas bubbles, an arrangement is known (DD -WP 231 573), with which a selective measurement is possible. In this arrangement, a defined layer of the medium to be examined is irradiated by a luminous flux. The luminous flux becomes differential after passing through the layer to be examined, i. Point by point on their for the particles to be examined, z. B. for microorganisms typical gray or color value examined. The thin layer of the medium to be examined is obtained by sucking a sample at certain time intervals and spraying it against a window, and the thin film forming during the downflow serves as the layer to be examined.
The disadvantage of this arrangement is that a separate measuring chamber is required, which makes continuous measurement difficult. In addition, this requires closures and controls as well as a complicated designed, commercially not available fiber optic cable.
For the determination of free chlorine in water, a photometric arrangement is already known (DD-WP 212810), in which in an open measuring chamber, a light source and a light receiver are arranged, which are continuously washed by the particle suspension. The cost of such an arrangement is relatively low. A disadvantage of this arrangement, in turn, that bubbles whose dimensions are of the order of the particles, superimpose the measurement signal with an additive component, since they can not be distinguished from the light receiver. Such simple measuring arrangements have therefore far not been used in fermentors, because there is introduced into the suspensions to be examined, a gas, being stirred simultaneously in the suspension. This results in gas bubbles whose size distribution depends on a variety of parameters that can not all be detected by measurement. The additive component can not be eliminated electronically.
The aim of the invention is to detect the particle concentration in a liquid with little effort and low measurement error.
The invention has for its object to eliminate gas bubbles in an open measuring chamber, which is continuously traversed by liquid, as far as possible.
According to the invention this is achieved in an arrangement in which a IVFeßsonde with an open measuring chamber in which a light emitter and a light receiver are located in a liquid container above the container bottom, is achieved in that the measuring probe is surrounded by a standing on the container bottom tube which has an opening at the bottom, which is located in the Strömschjtten, and is open at the top.
In this arrangement, therefore, the liquid is passed by the chimney effect from bottom to top of the probe. The resulting due to the introduced gas and the stirring gas bubbles usually do not reach the housing bottom, so that the liquid entering from there into the tube is largely free of bubbles.
The invention will be explained in an embodiment with reference to a drawing.
On a vessel bottom 1, a tube 2 is arranged, which has an opening 3 at the lower end, which lies in the flow shadow. In the tube protrudes from below a measuring probe 4, which has an open measuring chamber 5. In the open measuring chamber, an infrared emitter 6 and an infrared receiver 7 are arranged.
By this arrangement, there is a chimney effect, which causes the tube vertical flow from bottom to top. Since the suspension at the bottom of the vessel is virtually free of bubbles, only a few gas bubbles enter the measuring chamber, so that the measurement error is significantly reduced.
