As a measure of the durability of drilling muds produced with various additives, their filterability is according to American Petroleum Industry Code 29. The quality of the drilling muds and thus the effect of the additives are assessed after the "water loss" in the filtration test. Water loss here is the amount of water which passes through a named filter press in a certain time unit (30 minutes) at a certain predetermined pressure (7 kg / cm). The lower the amount of water passing, the better the consistency of the drilling fluid. The tests are carried out at room temperature.

The test results show the superiority of the compounds A and B according to the invention over the hitherto known high temperature resistant Bohrspüladditiven C, D and E. Table I demonstrates the approximate. Equivalence in drilling fluids based on virtually electrolyte-free water. Saline drilling muds clearly show the higher effectiveness of A and B. The superiority of the copolymers A and B according to the invention is particularly pronounced if the drilling muds, as in Example 2, contain calcium chloride in addition to sodium chloride. The compounds C and E fail because of their sensitivity to calcium ions, while the copolymer D does not reach the effectiveness of the copolymers according to the invention A and B.
