Abstract
The aim of the invention is to increase the time resolution of picosecond dye laser spectrometers with less equipment expense. The object of the invention is to design the spectrometer in such a way that exact synchronization of the deflection system of a streak camera with the pulse repetition frequency of a continuously operating mode-synchronized dye laser is achieved. Essentially, the spectrometer consists of an argon laser sinusoidally modulated by 2-mode oscillation, which pumps a dye laser which emits ultrashort pulses to excite a fluorescent sample and a streak camera located behind the sample. To achieve an exactly synchronous streak camera deflection, a beam splitter for irradiating a photodetector is arranged in the beam path between the argon laser and the dye laser, whose output via a Verstaerker with the X-deflection plates and of these via a Pi / 2 Verzoegerungseinheit with the Y Baffle plates of the streak camera is connected.

Charakteristik der bekannten technischen LösungenCharacteristic of the known technical solutions
Kontinuierlich arbeitende modensynchronisierte Gaslaser bzw. Folgende Nachteile sind charakteristisch für derartige Spektrometer-Anordnungen:Continuously operating mode-synchronized gas lasers or dye lasers permit the generation of ultra-short light pulses with a very high repetition frequency. Typical are pulse durations from 1 to 100 ps and repetition frequencies around 100 MHz. Such lasers are already successfully used in spectrometers to excite fluorescence and to study the fluorescence decay times that occur. The sensitive and fast photodetector used is an electron-optical streak camera whose deflection system is controlled by the same sine-wave generator which is also used to operate the mode locker located in the gas laser (WP 136540 »GOlO, 3/00). The following disadvantages are characteristic of such spectrometer arrangements:
To operate the mode locker, a very frequency-stable sinusoidal signal is required. At typical signal frequencies around 100 MHz, the frequency fluctuations may only amount to a few 10 Hz. As signal generators therefore very expensive frequency synthesizer are used. Even more critical are the demands on the deflection signal of the streak camera. Its frequency must be practically exactly equal to the laser pulse repetition frequency. Since these high demands can hardly be met, a time jitter always occurs, which leads to a reduction in the time resolution of the spectrometer.
The generation of ultrashort light pulses in continuous dye scavengers is also possible without the use of an actively operated mode locker. For example, the method of passive mode-locking is known in which there is an additional substance in the dye laser which acts as a passive switch (Ippen, E. P. et al., Applied Physics Letters 21, 348 (1972)).
Diese Methode hat den Nachteil, daß zu jedem Farbstoff, der als aktives Material im Laser eingesetzt wird, ein in denThis method has the disadvantage that for each dye, which is used as an active material in the laser, a in the
Parametern abgestimmter Farbstoff als passiver Modulator benötigt wird·Parameters tuned dye is required as a passive modulator
Another method is that the argon laser preceding the continuous dye laser emits sinusoidally modulated radiation and the resonator length of the dye laser is such that the resonator period of the color laser either coincides with the period of the sinusoidal signal or is an integer multiple thereof (WP 206262, US Pat. GOlO, 3/00). The sine modulation of the argon laser is achieved by exciting only two longitudinal modes and producing a beat at the difference frequency (WP 136679, HOLS, 3/10). Therefore, no frequency-stable signal generator is required.
Also known are spectrometers with continuously operating mode-locked gas or dye lasers, which manage without a fast photodetector. In these arrangements, the fluorescent light to be examined is mixed in an optically nonlinear medium with ultrashort laser pulses. The resulting mixed light is registered with a slow photodetector, and the time resolution is obtained by stepwise delay of the laser pulses with respect to the fluorescence light.
However, these spectrometers have a much lower detection sensitivity compared to the arrangement with Streak camera or they lead to a much higher radiation exposure of the sample to be examined. This can be a considerable disadvantage, in particular in the case of biological examination objects.
- 4 Darlegung des Wesens der Erfindung- 4 Presentation of the essence of the invention
The invention has for its object to design the spectrometer on the basis of a continuously operating mode-locked dye laser and a streak camera so that an exact synchronization of the deflection of the streak camera is achieved with the pulse Foigefrequenz the continuously operating mode-synchronized Farbstoffiasers.
The spectrometer according to the invention essentially consists of a sinusoidal modulated argon laser for pumping the dye laser, the dye laser whose resonator period either coincides with the period of the sine signal or is an integer multiple thereof, from the sample irradiated by the dye laser and from the streak camera with upstream optics for the point-like imaging of fluorescent light of the sample on the camera "In the beam path of the argon laser is also a beam splitter for deflecting a small portion of the radiation to a photodetector, whose output through a frequency-selective amplifier with the X-deflecting plates, and from there above a ТГ / 2-deceleration unit is connected to the Y-baffles of the streak camera. In operation, the sinusoidally modulated argon laser radiation in the dye laser causes the formation of ultrashort pulses in fixed phase relation to the pump signal. Since the amplified signal of the photodetector is also strictly correlated with oem pump signal, the deflection system of the streak camera is controlled exactly synchronous with the laser pulse sequence frequency. The center frequency of the selective amplifier input is equal to the frequency of the pump signal. The center frequency of the amplifier output may be equal to the center frequency of the input or, after appropriate reduction, equal to a subharmonic thereof. This second variant is advantageous if the deflection system of the streak camera is not suitable for the very high frequency of the pump signal.
The invention will be explained in more detail below using an exemplary embodiment. In the accompanying drawing, the scheme of the dye laser spectrometer is shown. The radiation of the argon laser A strikes and excites the dye laser FL. For example, if the argon laser has a resonator length L = 120 cm, this results in a frequency spacing of adjacent longitudinal modes of 125 MHz. According to previously proposed methods for generating sinusoidally modulated radiation of an argon laser, it is possible to obtain a sinusoidal modulation at the frequencies of four to seven times the mode spacing, i. at 500 MHz, 625 MHz, 750 MHz and 875 MHz. According to one of the methods already proposed, the current in the magnet coil is reduced to such an extent at medium current in the laser tube until a beat between only two excited longitudinal modes is observed.
2ns ultrakurze Farbstofflaserimpulse emittiert. If, for example, one works with 500 MHz, then a dye laser can be pumped whose resonator length Lp. «30 cm is. In this case, the period length L c 2L_ true / Farbstofflasorresonators of the period of the 500 MHz-match pump radiation and it will я likewise corresponding to a previously proposed method at a time interval 2Lp./c 2ns emits ultrashort pulses of laser dye.
The radiation of the dye laser is focused by the lens Ll in the fluorescent sample F. The fluorescent light is projected onto the photocathode of the streak camera SK via the lenses L2 and L3. In the beam path between L2 and L3 are the polarizer P and the monochromator M.
Ein mit der Photodiode fest verbundenes Wendelpotentiometer liefert eine der Ver-By way of the beam splitter T and the expansion system L5-L6, a small part of the pump radiation reaches the photodiode PD movable in the direction of the arrow. A helical potentiometer permanently connected to the photodiode supplies one of the
Shift proportional DC voltage to the X input of the XY recorder XY, The output signal of the photodiode PD is amplified in the connected 500 MHz narrowband amplifier V and fed to the X-deflection plates of the streak camera SK. The output of amplifier V is also connected to the Y-baffles of streak camera SK via a Tg / 2 delay unit. This leads to a circular deflection of the photoelectrons in the streak camera. A small region of the circle irradiated on the fluorescent screen by the photoelectrons is imaged via the lens L4 onto the diaphragm B, behind which the photomultiplier PM is located. The output of the photomultiplier is connected to the Y input of the XY recorder.
In operation, the photodiode PD is moved. This results in a variable phase shift between the fluorescence of the sample F and the deflection in the "streak camera SK." As a result, the time course of the fluorescence between two laser pulses is obtained on the XY recorder because there are many fluorescence events due to the high laser pulse repetition frequency superimposed, results in a very good detection sensitivity.
