V současnosti jsou známy nejrůznější druhy nosičů informací a to reklamních i jiných. Takové nosiče jsou často konstruovány jako jednoúčelové, ale je známo i více případů, kdy zmíněné nosiče informací plní ještě jinou funkci. Tak například jsou často jako nosič reklamní informace využívány tužky a pera, diáře, kalendáře, nebo i jiné kancelářské potřeby. Vždy je podstatné, v případě zejména reklamních informací, aby subjekt, na který mají tyto informace působit, byl s touto informací v kontaktu co nejčastěji. Současně ale existují výrobky, jejichž obaly samotné jsou z důvodů obchodních a někdy i legislativních pro nesení informace, zejména reklamní informace, jen omezeně použitelné, nebo někdy i nepoužitelné. Příkladně cigaretové obaly samy o sobě mají zpravidla jen potisk, charakteristický pro jejich výrobce, ale další informace se omezuje jen na povinné varování před poškozením zdraví vlivem kouření cigaret. V takovém případě je sice znám postup, kdy se z originálního obalu cigaret, tedy z klasické cigaretové krabičky, přemístí cigarety po zakoupení do speciálního tuhého pouzdra, zpravidla kovového, které pak někdy mívá reklamní potisk. Nevýhoda zde ovšem spočívá v tom, že se zvyšuje pracnost při manipulaci s cigaretami mezi okamžikem nákupu a momenty spotřeby jednotlivých cigaret. To zde příkladně u kuřáků, kde se před konzumací cigaret projevuje vždy zvýšená nervozita, která se právě konzumací cigarety má potlačit, znamená, vedle vcelku nepatrné fyzické námahy, podstatnou námahu psychickou. Obdobná situace by potom nastávala i u jiných výrobků, kde by bylo nutno v analogické operaci manipulovat přídavně s tímto zbožím. Vedle toho, že upravené obaly na zboží, které mohou lépe, než originální obaly, nést další informace a vedle případné zlepšené ochranné funkce, zpravidla takové upravené obaly již další funkce nemají. Přitom právě mnohdy obaly, které se často používají a jsou tak tedy i často v kontaktu s potenciálním objektem, na který má reklama působit, nebo ke kterému se má informace přenášet, jsou právě takovými obaly, kde se z různých důvodů přímo na obal reklama či informace nedává. V oblasti cigaretových krabiček jsou sice známy i ochranné obaly na původní krabičky, ale ty zpravidla nenesou žádné informace a také buď jejich výroba a distribuce je příliš náročná, nebo také manipulace s cigaretami je komplikovaná, pokud takový obal kryje původní krabičku po celém povrchu.
