Propanbutan je zmes ethanu (5 ± 1 %), propanu (70 ± 10 %) a butanu (25 ± 12 %). Odpařováním propanbutanu pri odbere dochádza k rychlému poklesu teploty v dósledku odčerpávania tepla kvapaline na odpař (výpamé teplo) a tým k ochladzovaniu kvapaliny až o desiatky stupňov.
