Referring to fig. 1-3, a base 25 is attached to the underside of the housing 15 and is operatively coupled to the drive shaft. As shown, the base 25 includes an upper plate 30 and a lower plate 35 attached to the upper plate 30. In some embodiments, the upper plate 30 and the lower plate 35 may be a unitary structure such that the base has a single plate. The upper plate 30 defines an upper side of the base 25, and the lower plate 35 defines a lower side of the base 25. The upper and lower base plates 30, 35 cooperatively support the polishing pad 26 (FIG. 7) and, during operation of the sander 10, the underside faces the workpiece (not shown).
As best shown in fig. 2 and 3, the upper and lower base plates 30, 35 cooperatively define corners 36 with two end edges 37a, 37b and two side edges 38a, 38 b. The upper base plate 30 has a lip 39 extending along each end edge 37a, 37 b. The upper base plate 30 also includes a first guide mounting portion located adjacent the first corner 36a, and a second guide mounting portion 45 located adjacent the second corner 36b, the second corner 36b sharing an end edge 37a with the first corner 36 a. It should be understood that the upper floor 30 may also include guide mount portions on the corners at the end edges 37 b. Referring to fig. 3, 6A and 6B, the first guide mount 40 is defined by a post 46 and the second guide mount 45 is defined by a post 47. As shown in fig. 2, 6A, 6B, each post 46, 47 extends upwardly from the upper floor 30. Each guide mounting portion 40, 45 is also shown to have an angled portion 48a, 48b facing end edge 37a, and a hole 49a, 49b. The clamping channels 53a, 53b extend along the respective end edges 37a, 37b in the vicinity of the lip 39.
Referring to fig. 2 to 7, the base 25 further includes a first clamp 53, a second clamp 55, a first guide 60, and a second guide 65. As shown, a first clamp 53 extends along one end edge 37a and one side edge 38a, and a second clamp 55 extends along the other end edge 37b and the other side edge 38b to semi-permanently clamp or secure an end of the polishing pad 26 to the base 25 for performing a polishing operation (e.g., until the polishing pad 26 needs to be replaced). The clips 53, 55 have the same shape and include a clip connector end 57, the clip connector end 57 being pivotably coupled to the upper floor 30 (e.g., the clip 53 being pivotably coupled to the post 46). The clip 53, 55 also includes a clip arm 58 disposed in the clip channel 50a or 50b, and a clip gripping portion 59 on an end distal from the clip connector end 57.
As shown in fig. 3-7, the first guide member 60 is coupled to the post 46 near the end edge 37a at the corner 36, and the second guide member 65 is coupled to the post 47 near the end edge 37a at the adjacent corner 36. Each guide 60, 65 is shown attached to a respective post 46, 47 by a fastener 67 (e.g., a rivet, screw, bolt, etc.), the fastener 67 extending through a respective guide hole 68, 69 in the guide 60, 65. It should be understood that the guides 60 and 65 may be welded to the upper base plate 30 or otherwise integrally formed with the upper base plate 30.
Referring to fig. 8A-11B, first guide 60 includes a first base portion 70, and a first flange 75, first base portion 70 being coupled to post 46 and lying within plane 72, first flange 75 extending from first base portion 70 and being oriented at a non-zero angle with respect to first base portion 70 (i.e., with respect to plane 72). A first transition 77 is provided between the first base portion 70 and the first flange 75, and the transition 77 extends from the first base portion 70 below the plane 72. The end of the first base portion 70 has a hook 78 to help maintain the first guide 60 in alignment on the post 46 so that the first guide 60 can receive the end of the sanding sheet 26.
As best shown in fig. 6A and 6B, the first guide 60 and an upper side of the base plate 30 (e.g., the first guide mounting portion 40) cooperatively define a first space 105 for receiving an end of the abrasive sheet 26. Also, the second guide 65 and the upper side of the base plate 30 (e.g., the second guide mounting portion 45) cooperatively define a second space 110. As shown in the illustrated embodiment, each space 105, 110 is defined as a tapered space due to the inclined portions 48a, 48b provided on the guide mounting portions 40, 45, respectively.
The first and second guides 60, 65 cooperatively receive and temporarily hold the ends of the abrasive sheet in place on the base 25 such that the clamps 53, 55 can then be actuated from an undamped position (shown in fig. 3-7) to a clamped position (shown in fig. 1) to secure the abrasive sheet 26 to the base 25. For example, attaching the sanding sheet 26 to the base 25, the user slides the ends of the sanding sheet 26 into the spaces 105, 110 when the clamp arm 58 (and typically the clamps 53, 55) are in the undamped position. That is, the end of the sanding sheet 26 slides under the clamp arm 58. In some embodiments, the second clamp 55 may secure one end of the sanding sheet 26 prior to aligning the other end of the sanding sheet 26 with respect to the guides 60, 65. When the ends of the grinding plate 26 near the first and second guides 60, 65 are inserted into the first and second spaces 105, 110, the first and second flanges 75, 85 control the movement of the ends of the grinding plate 26 toward the first and second transition portions 77, 87, respectively. The first transition 77 and the second transition 87 retain the sanding sheet between the first and second guide mounting portions 40, 45 and the first and second guides 60, 65, respectively, by friction.
After the ends of the polishing sheet 26 are retained in the first and second spaces 105, 110 by the guides 60, 65, the first clamp 53 can be manipulated to move from the undamped position to the clamped position to secure the polishing sheet 26 to the end edge 37a. The user may also manipulate the second clamp 55 to secure the other end of the tab 26 along the end edge 37b if the second clamp 55 is not already secured in the clamped position. The lip 39 helps to retain and secure the tab 26 so that the tab 26 is held against the underside of the lower plate 35. Securing the clamps 53, 55 in the clamped position may semi-permanently lock the sheet 26 in place. Movement of the clamps 53, 55 back to the undamped position allows the user to replace the polishing pad 26. In general, the guides 60, 65 and clamps 53, 55 provide a two-step sheet mounting process that facilitates i) aligning and retaining the sheet 26 on the base 25, and ii) fixedly attaching the sheet 26 to the base 25, such that the sander 10 can be used on a workpiece.
The above detailed description is merely illustrative in nature and is not intended to limit the disclosure or the application and uses of the disclosure. Furthermore, there is no intention to be bound by any expressed or implied theory presented in the preceding field of use, background, summary or the detailed description. Although the present disclosure has been described in detail with reference to certain preferred embodiments, variations and modifications exist within the scope and spirit of one or more independent aspects of the present disclosure as described.
