Description

Image forming apparatus with a toner supply device
Technical Field
The present invention relates to an image forming apparatus particularly useful as a copying machine or an MFP (multi function peripheral).
Background
In copying processes of a copying machine, MFP, or the like, one printing sheet will be subjected to first paper-feeding processing and second paper-feeding processing. In the first paper feed process, the printing paper will first be conveyed from the paper cassette to the registration rollers. In the second paper feed process, the printing paper is transferred from the registration roller to the discharge roller after the printing process.
In the conventional art, in the case of performing a normal copying process, there are several possible methods that have been applied to accelerate the first copying speed (for example, japanese laid-open patent application No. 6-102727) (hereinafter, referred to as patent document 1) and japanese laid-open patent application No. 2000-255841 (hereinafter, referred to as patent document 2)). One method is to perform the first paper feed processing first by sending a print start action (i.e., a first paper feed start request) from the scanner to the print controller and then sending a first paper feed start request from the print controller to the paper feed controller, while scanning the original without waiting for the scanning process of the original to be completed. Another method is to accelerate the conveyance speed at the time of first paper feeding.
On the other hand, when image editing processing such as scaling processing, rotation processing, and the like is performed using a scanner, there may occur a problem such that the processing time of image editing becomes unstable. In order to further solve various possible problems caused by the above-described problems, in the conventional art, as shown in fig. 1, at the time of completion of the original scanning processing and the image editing processing, a print start action (i.e., a first paper feed start request) is transmitted from the scanner (1) to the print controller (2), and then the first paper feed start request is transmitted from the print controller (2) to the paper feed controller (3). The second paper feed time is completely determined by the paper feed controller (3).
As described above, in the conventional image forming apparatus, when image editing processing such as scaling processing, rotation processing, and the like is performed using the scanner (1), a print start action is transmitted from the scanner (1) to the print controller (2) at the time when the original scanning processing and the image editing processing are completed. Therefore, in the case of executing the copy processing accompanied with the image editing processing, there is a problem that the first copy speed is significantly reduced as compared with the case of the normal copy process in which the print start operation is transmitted from the scanner (1) to the print controller (2) when the document is scanned.
In view of the above, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art having the benefit of this disclosure that there exists a need for an improved image forming apparatus. This invention addresses this need in the art as well as other needs, which will become apparent to those skilled in the art from this disclosure.
Disclosure of Invention
It is therefore an object of the present invention to solve the above-described problems and to provide an image forming apparatus capable of increasing a first copying speed when copying accompanied by image editing is performed.
An image forming apparatus according to an aspect of the present invention includes: a paper feed controller, a scanner, and a print controller. The paper feed controller performs first paper feed processing and second paper feed processing. The scanner performs an original scanning process of optically scanning an original and an image editing process of editing a scanned image, and transmits a first paper feed start request at a time between the start of the original scanning process and the completion of the image editing process, and transmits a second paper feed start request after the completion of the image editing process. The first paper feed start request is a request for causing the paper feed controller to start the first paper feed processing, and the second paper feed start request is a request for causing the paper feed controller to start the second paper feed processing. The printing controller receives a first paper feed start request and a second paper feed start request from the scanner, and controls the paper feed controller based on the first paper feed start request or the second paper feed start request.
Various objects, features, aspects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art from the following detailed description, which, taken in conjunction with the annexed drawings, discloses a preferred embodiment of the present invention.

Detailed Description
Preferred embodiments of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings. It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the following descriptions of the embodiments of the present invention are provided for illustration only and not for the purpose of limiting the invention as defined by the appended claims and their equivalents.
Fig. 2 shows a block diagram of the image forming apparatus 10 as an example of the embodiment of the present invention. Fig. 3 is a sequence diagram for explaining the operation of the image forming apparatus 10 according to the present invention. Fig. 4A to 4C show a flowchart of an operation process of the image forming apparatus 10 according to the present invention.
As shown in fig. 2, the image forming apparatus 10 according to the present embodiment has an original scanning function of optically scanning an original and an image editing function of editing a scanned image. Further, the image forming apparatus 10 has a scanner (i.e., a scanner device) 11, a print controller (i.e., a print control device) 12, a paper feed controller (i.e., a paper feed control device) 13, and a printing unit 14. The scanner 11 transmits a paper feed start request for causing the paper feed controller 13 to start feeding paper to the printing unit 14 to the printing controller 12. The print controller 12 receives a paper feed start request from the scanner 11, and sends the paper feed start request to the paper feed controller 13. The paper feed controller 13 receives a paper feed start request from the print controller 12, and upon receiving the paper feed start request, performs a first paper feed process and a second paper feed process of feeding paper to the print unit 14 in accordance with the received paper feed start request. The printing unit 14 prints an image.
Here, the first paper feeding process performed by the paper feed controller 13 refers to a process of picking up the printing paper 15 from the paper cassette 16 one by one using the paper feed roller 17 and conveying the printing paper 15 to the registration roller 18 provided in front of the printing unit 14. The second paper feeding process performed by the paper feed controller 13 refers to a process of feeding the printing paper 15 from the registration rollers 18 to the printing unit 14, and discharging the printing paper 15 via the fixing roller 19, the discharge roller 20, and the like after the printing process is completed. The paper feed roller 17, the registration roller 18, the fixing roller 19, the discharge roller 20, and the like are driven by a paper feed controller 13 that controls a drive circuit (not shown) of each roller.
The scanner 11 has an image scaling function and a rotation function as an image editing function. In the present embodiment, as shown in fig. 3, when a copy button (not shown) is pressed to start document scanning, the scanner 11 transmits a request to start first paper-feeding processing (hereinafter referred to as a first paper-feeding start request) to the print controller 12, and after the image editing processing is completed, the scanner 11 transmits a request to start second paper-feeding processing (hereinafter referred to as a second paper-feeding start request) to the print controller 12.
The print controller 12 controls the print unit 14. Further, as shown in fig. 3, the print controller 12 receives a first paper feed start request from the scanner 11 and sends the first paper feed start request to the paper feed controller 13, and also receives a second paper feed start request from the scanner 11 and sends the second paper feed start request to the paper feed controller 13.
As shown in fig. 2 and 3, the paper feed controller 13 receives a first paper feed start request from the print controller 12, and causes the printing paper 15 to be conveyed from the paper cassette 16 to the registration roller 18 by controlling the drive circuit of the paper feed roller 17 in accordance with the received first paper feed start request, and causes the printing paper 15 to stand by at the position of the registration roller 18.
In the present embodiment, as shown in fig. 2, a jam sensor (i.e., a jam detecting device) 21 for detecting a jam is provided in the vicinity of the registration roller 18. The signal from the jam sensor 21 is output to the paper feed controller 13. If the period of time from the completion of the first paper-feeding process to the start of the second paper-feeding process exceeds a predetermined time, that is, if the time during which the printing paper 15 stands by at the position of the registration roller 18 exceeds a predetermined time, the paper-feeding controller 13 judges that a jam has occurred based on the signal received from the jam sensor 21. When the paper feed controller 13 recognizes a jam in this way, it displays a jam state on a liquid crystal display device or the like (not shown) of the image forming apparatus 10, and at the same time, the paper feed controller 13 stops the printing process of the printing unit 14.
Therefore, in case the image editing processing time of the scanner 11 is long, the scanner 11 will not be able to send the second paper feed start request to the print controller 12 within a predetermined time, and the time for which the printing paper 15 stands by at the position of the registration roller 18 will become long. In this case, even if the apparatus is in a normal state, an error of false detection as a jam may occur.
In order to prevent such false detection of a jam, in the present embodiment, an instruction that does not give up to the paper controller 13 to detect any jam before the second paper feed start request is received by the paper feed controller 13 is appended to the first paper feed start request sent from the print controller 12 to the paper feed controller 13, or the paper feed controller 13 detects a jam only after the second paper feed start request is received from the print controller 12, so the process for detecting a jam is actually started after the second paper feed start.
When the paper feed controller 13 receives a second paper feed start request from the print controller 12, it conveys the printing paper 15 to the printing unit 14 by controlling the drive circuits of the registration roller 18, the fixing roller 19, and the discharge roller 20, respectively, at predetermined timings. After this operation, the image is printed on the printing paper 15 by the printing unit 14, and at the fixing roller 19, fixing processing, pressure-bonding processing, and the like are performed on the printing paper 15 with the printed image, and then, the printing paper 15 is discharged by the discharge roller 20 after being processed in this manner.
Now, an operation example of the image forming apparatus 10 having the above-described structure will be described with reference to fig. 4A to 4C. Fig. 4A is a flowchart of the operation of the scanner 11, fig. 4B is a flowchart of the operation of the print controller 12, and fig. 4C is a flowchart of the operation of the paper feed controller 13.
First, as shown in fig. 4A, in step S1, the scanner 11 determines whether document scanning has started. If it is determined that scanning has actually started (yes at step S1), in step S2, the scanner 11 transmits a first paper-feed start request to the print controller 12. In step S3, the scanner 11 determines whether the image editing process has been completed. If it is determined that the image editing process has actually been completed (yes at step S3), the scanner 11 transmits a second paper feed start request to the print controller 12 at step S4.
On the other hand, as shown in fig. 4B, in step S11, the print controller 12 determines whether a first paper-feeding start request has been received from the scanner 11 (step S2). If it is determined that the first paper feed start request has actually been received (yes at step S11), the print controller 12 sends the first paper feed start request to the paper feed controller 13 in step S12. In step S13, the print controller 12 determines whether a second paper-feeding start request has been received from the scanner 11 (step S4). If it is determined that the second paper feed start request has actually been received (yes at step S13), the print controller 12 sends the second paper feed start request to the paper feed controller 13 in step S14.
On the other hand, as shown in fig. 4C, in step S21, the paper feed controller 13 determines whether a first paper feed start request has been received from the print controller 12 (step S12). If it is determined that the first paper feed start request has been actually received (yes at step S21), in step S22, the paper feed controller 13 controls the drive circuit of the paper feed roller 17 to perform the first paper feed process of causing the printing paper 15 to be conveyed from the paper cassette 16 to the registration roller 18, and causes the printing paper 15 to stand by at the position of the registration roller 18.
Next, in step S23, the paper feed controller 13 determines whether a second paper feed start request has been received from the print controller 12 (step S14). If it is determined that the second paper feed start request has been actually received (yes at step S23), the paper feed controller 13 performs a second paper feed process of causing the printing paper 15 to be conveyed from the registration roller 18 to the printing unit 14 by controlling the drive circuits of the registration roller 18, the fixing roller 19, and the discharge roller 20, respectively, at predetermined timings (step S24), and causes the printing paper 15 to be discharged via the fixing roller 19, the discharge roller 20, and the like after the printing process is completed.
Also, in step S25, the paper feed controller 13 determines whether a paper jam has been detected after the second paper feed process is started. If it is determined that a paper jam has actually been detected (yes at step S25), the paper feed controller 13 displays that a paper jam state is present on a liquid crystal display device or the like (not shown) of the image forming apparatus 10 and stops the printing process of the printing unit 14 at step S26.
Now, referring to fig. 3 and 1, the first copy time in the present embodiment (fig. 3) and the first copy time in the conventional case (fig. 1) will be compared. Here, the transmission time of the first paper-feeding start request and the second paper-feeding start request is set to zero.
In the conventional case shown in the sequence diagram of fig. 1, the first copy time may be calculated as: the first copy time is the scanning time + the image editing time + the first paper feeding time + the second paper feeding time.
On the other hand, in the case of the present invention illustrated in the sequence diagram of fig. 3, if the first paper-feeding time is longer than the sum of the scanning time and the image editing time (i.e., the first paper-feeding time > scanning time + image editing time), the first copy time can be calculated as: the first copy time is equal to the first paper-feeding time plus the second paper-feeding time. If the first paper-feeding time is shorter than the sum of the scanning time and the image editing time (i.e., first paper-feeding time < scanning time + image editing time), the first copy time may be calculated as: the first copy time is the scanning time + the image editing time + the second paper feeding time.
Here, consider a case where "first paper-feeding time > scanning time + image editing time", and if the scanning time is 1000 msec, the image editing time is 500 msec, the first paper-feeding time is 2500 msec, and the second paper-feeding time is 2000 msec, then conventionally, the first copying time will be 1000+500+2500+2000 — 6000 msec. On the other hand, under the same conditions, the first copy time in the case of the present invention will be 2500+2000 to 4500 milliseconds. Therefore, the first copying time of the present invention can be shortened by 1500 milliseconds as compared with the conventional case.
Now, considering the case of "first paper-feeding time < scanning time + image editing time", if the scanning time is 1000 msec, the image editing time is 2000 msec, the first paper-feeding time is 2500 msec, and the second paper-feeding time is 2000 msec, then conventionally, the first copying time will be 1000+2000+2500+2000 — 7500 msec. On the other hand, under the same conditions, the first copy time in the present invention will be 1000+2000+2000 to 5000 milliseconds. Therefore, the first copying time of the present invention can be shortened by 2500 milliseconds as compared with the conventional case.
From the above description it can be appreciated that: according to the embodiment of the present invention, at the start of original scanning, the scanner 11 transmits a request to start first paper-feeding processing to the print controller 12, and after the image editing processing is completed, transmits a request to start second paper-feeding processing to the print controller 12. Therefore, the present invention can greatly improve the first copying speed, compared to the conventional case where a request to start the first paper-feeding process is sent after the image editing process is completed.
In addition, according to the embodiment of the present invention, the jam detection processing by the jam sensor 21 and the paper feed controller 13 is performed only after the second paper feed is started. Therefore, according to the present invention, any jam false detection at the position of the registration roller 18 can be reliably prevented.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the configuration using the scanner, the print controller, the paper feed controller, the printing paper, the paper cassette, the registration roller, the jam detecting function, the image editing function, and the like is not limited to the above-described embodiment of the present invention, and various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
For example, in the above-described embodiment, in order to accelerate the first copying speed, the scanner 11 should transmit a first paper-feed start request at the start of document scanning. However, this is not a limitation of the present invention. The scanner 11 may be caused to transmit the first paper-feed start request at any time during a period from the start of original scanning to the end of image editing processing of a scanned image.
While only the preferred embodiment has been chosen to illustrate the present invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications can be made herein without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims. Furthermore, the foregoing descriptions of the embodiments of the present invention are provided for illustration only, and not for the purpose of limiting the invention as defined by the appended claims and their equivalents. Thus, the scope of the invention is not limited to the disclosed embodiments.
Also, the terms "means-plus-function" in the claims should include any structure that can be used to carry out the function of the element of the invention.
