Abstract

本发明提供一种显示装置,在可通过数字驱动方式来进行多色阶显示的显示装置中,不需具备帧存储器,并且抑制因驱动电流所造成的显示装置的发热。本发明的显示装置与以往的数字驱动方式的有机电激发光显示装置相比,不需将1个图场期间分为扫描期间及发光期间,在每条线的像素(51)中,写入来自于数据线(60)的影像数据,并将每条线所产生的斜坡电压RMP(n-1)、RMP(n)、RMP(n+1)及影像数据电压加以比较,来进行根据该比较结果的发光显示。由此,可提供一种通过数字驱动方式来进行多色阶显示,且不需帧存储器的显示装置。并且,也可降低供应至有机电激发光元件(50)的电流,而有助于抑制显示装置的发热并提升可靠性。

Description

显示装置
技术领域
本发明涉及一种显示装置,尤其是关于可响应影像数据而进行多色阶(multiple gradation也称为多灰度色标mutiple gray scale,表示色彩的深浅度,本文中称为色阶)显示的显示装置。
背景技术
近年来,采用有机电激发光元件(Organic Electro LuminescenceDevice:以下称为“有机电激发光元件”)的有机电激发光显示装置,作为用来取代CRT(Cathode Ray Tube,阴极射线管)及LCD(LiquidCrystal Display,液晶显示器)的显示装置而受到瞩目。尤其是关于用来将驱动电流供应至各像素的有机电激发光元件的驱动用晶体管,开发出一种具有薄膜晶体管(Thin Film Transistor:以下称为“TFT”)的有源矩阵型(active matrix)的有机电激发光显示装置。
在有源矩阵型有机电激发光显示装置中,关于用来表现多色阶的驱动方式,为人所知的有模拟驱动方式及数字驱动方式。在模拟驱动方式的有机电激发光显示装置中,将响应数据电压的大小的电流供应至有机电激发光元件,而以响应数据电压的明亮度来点亮该有机电激发光元件。相对于此,在数字驱动型的有机电激发光显示装置中,将具有响应数据电压的负荷比(Duty ratio)的脉冲电流,供应至有机电激发光元件,藉此可表现出多色阶。
以下参照附图,来说明数字驱动方式的有机电激发光显示装置。如图7所示,在将多个像素排列为矩阵状而构成的显示面板5,连接扫描驱动器3及数据驱动器4来构成。从TV接收机等影像来源所供应的影像信号,被供应至影像信号处理电路6,而进行影像显示所需的信号处理,藉此所获得的RGB3原色的影像信号被供应至有机电激发光显示装置2的数据驱动器4。
此外,从影像信号处理电路6中所获得的水平同步信号Hsync及垂直同步信号Vsync被供应至时序信号产生电路7,由此所获得的时序信号则被供应至扫描驱动器3及数据驱动器4。之后,从时序信号产生电路7中所获得的时序信号被供应至斜坡电压(ramp voltage)产生电路8,由此,如之后所述,生成用在有机电激发光显示装置2的驱动的斜坡电压,该斜坡电压被供应至显示面板5的各个像素。在图6所示的各个电路、各个驱动器、及有机电激发光显示器,连接有电源电路(省略图标)。
显示面板5被构成为,将图8所示的电路构成的像素51排列为矩阵状而构成。各像素51具备:由有机层所构成的有机电激发光元件50;响应对栅极的导通/非导通控制信号的输入,而对有机电激发光元件50进行通电的导通/非导通的驱动用晶体管TR2;将来自上述扫描驱动器的扫描电压施加到栅极,而成为导通状态的写入用晶体管TR1;由于写入用晶体管TR1成为导通状态,而施加有来自于上述数据驱动器的数据电压的数据保持用的电容元件C;在正负一对的输入端子,供应有来自于斜坡电压产生电路8的斜坡电压以及电容元件C的输出电压,并将两种电压加以比较的比较器9;并且将比较器9的输出信号,供应至驱动用晶体管TR2的栅极。
在驱动用晶体管TR2的源极,连接有电流供应线54,在此电流供应线54施加有电压PVDD。驱动用晶体管TR2的漏极连接于有机电激发光元件50的阳极,在有机电激发光元件50的阴极施加有电压CV。
在写入用晶体管TR1的一方电极(例如源极),连接有上述数据驱动器,写入用晶体管TR1的另一方电极则连接于电容元件C的一端,并且连接于比较器9的反转输入端子。在比较器9的非反转输入端子,连接有上述斜坡电压产生电路8的输出端子。
如图9(a)所示,在上述有机电激发光显示装置2中,1个图场(field)期间被分割为前半段的扫描期间及后半段的发光期间。在扫描期间中,关于各条水平线,来自于扫描驱动器的扫描电压,施加于构成各像素51的写入用晶体管TR1,使写入用晶体管TR1成为导通状态,由此,来自于数据驱动器的影像数据电压被施加于电容元件C,该电压作为电荷而蓄积于电容元件C。结果,对构成有机电激发光显示装置2的所有像素,设定有1个图场份的影像数据。
此外,如图9(b)所示,斜坡电压(ramp voltage)产生电路8在每1个图场期间中,在前半段的扫描期间中维持高电平的电压值,在后半段的发光期间中产生斜坡电压,该斜坡电压从低电平的电压值直线变化为高电平的电压值。在前半段的扫描期间中,来自于斜坡电压产生电路8的高电平的电压,被施加于比较器9的非反转输入端子,由此,比较器9的输出不会受到输入于反转输入端子的输入电压的影响,而如图9(c)所示,经常成为高电平。
此外,在后半段的发光期间中,在来自于斜坡电压产生电路8的斜坡电压被施加于比较器9的非反转输入端子的同时,电容元件C的输出电压(数据电压)被施加于比较器9的反转输入端子,由此,比较器9的输出如图9(c)所示,响应两电压的比较结果成为低电平及高电平的2个值。即,在斜坡电压低于影像数据电压的期间中,比较器9的输出为低电平,在斜坡电压高于影像数据电压的期间中,比较器9的输出为高电平。在此,比较器的输出成为低电平的期间的长度,与数据电压的大小成正比。
如此,比较器9的输出仅在与数据电压的大小成正比的期间中成为低电平,由此,驱动用晶体管TR2仅在该期间中成为导通,而使对有机电激发光元件50的通电导通。结果,构成显示面板5的各像素51的有机电激发光元件50在1个图场期间中,仅在与对各像素51的影像数据电压的大小成正比的期间中发光,由此可实现多色阶的显示。
如上所述,根据此有机电激发光显示装置,由于在1个图场期间内可仅进行1次扫描而实现多色阶的显示,因此不需进行高速扫描,且不会导致虚拟轮廓的产生。此外,由于此有机电激发光显示装置采用数字驱动方式,因此不易受到驱动用晶体管TR2的特性参差不齐的影响,并且可因电源电压的降低而达到低功耗化。

发明内容
(发明所欲解决的问题)
然而,在上述数字驱动方式的有机电激发光显示装置中,将1个图场期间的前半段设定为扫描期间,在此扫描期间中,写入1个图场份的影像数据,并将1个图场期间的后半段设定为发光期间,因此,必须具备用来记忆1个图场份的影像数据的图场存储器。
此外,由于发光期间比1个图场期间还短,因此为了获得与模拟驱动方式的有机电激发光显示装置相同的发光亮度,而在发光期间中增大驱动电流(通过驱动用晶体管TR2而流通至有机电激发光元件50的电流),而增加显示面板5的发热。一旦显示面板5的发热增大,则有机电激发光元件50的发光特性产生恶化,而导致显示不良的问题。
(解决问题的手段)
本发明的显示装置的主要特征构成如以下所述。
本发明的显示装置具备:排列为行与列的矩阵的多个像素;依序产生多个扫描脉冲信号的扫描驱动器;输出影像数据的数据驱动器;产生与各个扫描脉冲信号同步的多个斜坡电压的斜坡电压产生电路;各个像素接收电流的供应而发光的发光元件;施加有来自上述扫描驱动器的扫描脉冲信号,而加以导通的写入用晶体管;以及将通过上述写入用晶体管而供应的来自于上述数据驱动器的影像数据电压与上述多个斜坡电压中的对应该像素的斜坡电压加以比较,并响应该比较结果,将电流供应至上述发光元件的驱动手段。
此外,除了上述特征构成的外,上述驱动手段具备:保持上述影像数据的保持手段;将上述保持手段所保持的影像数据电压与上述斜坡电压加以比较的比较器;以及响应上述比较器的输出而导通的驱动用晶体管。
(发明的效果)
根据本发明的显示装置,并非如以往的数字驱动方式的有机电激发光显示装置,其不需将1个图场期间分为扫描期间及发光期间,而在每条线中写入影像数据,并将每条线所产生的斜坡电压及影像数据电压加以比较,来进行根据该比较结果的发光显示。由此,可提供通过数字驱动方式来进行多色阶显示,且不需帧存储器的显示装置。并且,根据本发明,也可降低供应至发光元件的电流,抑制显示装置的发热,而有助于提升可靠性。

具体实施方式
接下来参照附图,来说明本发明实施方式的有机电激发光显示装置。图1显示了此有机电激发光显示装置的全体构成图,图2显示了显示面板5的像素区域的方块图,图3显示了此有机电激发光显示装置的动作波形图,其显示出从图1的扫描驱动器3输出至各条线的像素的扫描脉冲信号Gn-1、Gn、Gn+1,以及从图1的斜坡电压产生电路10输出至各条线的像素的斜坡电压RMP(n-1)、RMP(n)、RMP(n+1)之间的关系。
此有机电激发光显示装置并非如以往的数字驱动方式的有机电激发光显示装置,将1个图场期间分为扫描期间及发光期间来进行多色阶显示,而是在每条线中写入影像数据之后,在每条线中产生与扫描脉冲信号同步的斜坡电压,并在比较器中将此斜坡电压与影像数据电压加以比较,根据该比较器的输出而驱动发光元件,由此来进行多色阶显示。
如图2所示,在显示面板5上,将图7所示的像素51配置为行与列的矩阵,并将共通的扫描脉冲信号Gn-1,供应至第(n-1)条线的各像素51。扫描脉冲信号Gn-1施加于各像素51的写入用晶体管TR1的栅极。此外,将与共通的扫描脉冲信号Gn-1同步而产生的斜坡电压RMP(n-1),供应至第(n-1)条线的各像素51,并施加于比较器9的非反转输入端子。
同样地,将共通的扫描脉冲信号Gn供应至第n条线的各像素51。此外,将与共通的扫描信号Gn同步而产生的斜坡电压RMP(n),供应至第n条线的各像素51。其它的线也完全相同。
此有机电激发光显示装置如图3所示,一旦扫描脉冲信号Gn-1上升至高电平,则响应于此而选择第(n-1)条线的各像素51,使来自于数据驱动器4的影像数据通过连接于各像素51的数据线60,写入于各像素51。具体而言,使各像素51的写入用晶体管TR1导通,并通过此写入用晶体管TR1,使来自于数据驱动器4的影像数据,保持在保持电容元件C。
另一方面,响应扫描信号Gn-1的产生,而产生出斜坡电压RMP(n-1),该斜坡电压RMP(n-1)从预定电压例如8V中具备斜率而朝0V下降。并通过比较器9,而将此斜坡电压RMP(n-1)以及保持在上述保持电容元件C的影像数据电压进行比较。比较器9的输出响应该比较结果,而取得低电平及高电平的2个值。
即,在斜坡电压RMP(n-1)高于影像数据电压的期间中,比较器9的输出成为高电平,在斜坡电压RMP(n-1)低于影像数据电压的期间中,比较器9的输出成为低电平。在此,比较器的输出成为低电平的期间的长度,与数据电压的大小成正比。如此,比较器9的输出仅在与数据电压的大小成正比的期间中成为低电平,由此,驱动用晶体管TR2仅在该期间中成为导通,而使对有机电激发光元件50的通电导通。
接着,一旦扫描脉冲信号Gn上升至高电平,则响应于此而选择第n条线的各像素51,使来自于数据驱动器4的影像数据通过连接于各像素51的数据线60,而写入于各像素51。同样地,响应扫描脉冲信号Gn的产生,而产生出斜坡电压RMP(n)。如此,在每一条线中,同时进行影像数据的写入及有机电激发光元件50的发光,结果,构成显示面板5的各像素51的有机电激发光元件50在1个图场期间中,仅在与相对于各像素51的影像数据电压的大小成正比的期间中发光,由此可实现多色阶显示。
此外,根据本实施方式,并非如以往的数字驱动方式的有机电激发光显示装置,其不需将1个图场期间分为扫描期间及发光期间,而在每条线中写入影像数据,并将斜坡电压及影像数据电压加以比较,来进行根据该比较结果的发光显示,因此,不仅可进行多色阶显示,且由于不需预先记忆1个图场份的影像数据,因此也不需具备帧存储器。并且可确保1个图场期间来作为发光期间,因此可降低供应至有机电激发光元件50的驱动电流,并抑制显示面板5的发热。
接下来参照图4,来说明斜坡电压产生电路10的具体电路构成。此斜坡电压产生电路10是由对应于各条线的多个斜坡电压产生单元10n-1、10n、10n+1、…..所构成。例如,斜坡电压产生单元10n-1具备:响应来自扫描驱动器3的扫描脉冲信号Gn-1的上升,而以低阻抗加以导通,并响应该下降而呈非导通状态的充电用晶体管TRA;通过响应扫描脉冲信号Gn-1而导通的充电用晶体管TRA,而急速充电至电源电压Vdd的电容元件CX;将储存于电容元件CX的电荷,通过斜坡电压输出线70n-1而放电至接地电压0V的放电用晶体管TRB;斜坡电压输出线70n-1连接于在第(n-1)条线所连接的各像素51的比较器9的非反转输入端子(+)。
在此,斜坡电压输出线70n-1的一端,连接于比电源电压Vdd(例如8V)还低的电压,例如接地电压0V,由此进行偏压而成为0V。此外,在放电用晶体管TRB的栅极,施加与放电用晶体管TRB的阈值电压为相同或略高的电压信号GXn-1,而以通过高阻抗使放电用晶体管TRB导通的方式来构成。关于其它斜坡电压产生单元10n、10n+1、…..,也具备与上述电路相同的构成。
接下来参照图5,以第n个斜坡电压产生单元10n为例,来说明斜坡电压产生电路10的动作。首先,一旦扫描脉冲信号Gn上升至高电平,则充电用晶体管TRA以低阻抗加以导通,并将连接于充电用晶体管TRA的电容元件CX的端子,急速充电至电源电压Vdd。实际上,由于具有因充电用晶体管TRA的阈值电压产生的电压损失,因此电容元件CX的充电电压比Vdd稍低。由此,使成为斜坡电压输出线70n的电压的斜坡电压RMP(n),也通过放电用晶体管TRB而急速上升至电源电压Vdd的电压。
之后若使充电用晶体管TRA导通,则充电在电容元件CX的电荷,通过放电用晶体管TRB,而以比充电时还缓慢的速度,放电至接地电压0V,而附加在斜坡电压输出线70n的寄生电容Cs中所充电的电荷,也放电至接地电压0V,因此可获得如图5所示的斜坡电压RMP(n)的波形。随着斜坡电压RMP(n)的下降而使斜坡电压RMP(n)低于影像数据电压,则如上所述,比较器9的输出成为低电平,而使有机电激发光元件50发光。
如图6所示,电压信号GXn可为与扫描脉冲信号Gn-1为反相的脉冲信号。在此情况下,是与充电用晶体管TRA进行互补的导通及关断。即,一旦扫描脉冲信号Gn-1上升至高电平,则充电用晶体管TRA以低阻抗加以导通。与此同时,电压信号GXn处于,降低至低电平而使放电用晶体管TRB关断,或是以低阻抗加以导通的状态。由此,电容元件CX的端子被急速充电至电源电压Vdd。
然后,一旦扫描脉冲信号Gn-1上升至低电平,则充电用晶体管TRA成为非导通。与此同时,电压信号GXn上升至高电平,而使放电用晶体管TRB导通。如此,储存在电容元件CX的电荷通过放电用晶体管TRB,往斜坡电压输出线70n移动,并急速变化至电源电压Vdd,之后,该电荷被放电至接地电压0V。由此,可获得如图6所示的斜坡电压RMP(n)。

Claims (8)

1.一种显示装置,其特征为具备:
排列为行与列的矩阵的多个像素;
依序产生多个扫描脉冲信号的扫描驱动器;
输出影像数据的数据驱动器;
响应各个扫描脉冲信号而产生多个斜坡电压的斜坡电压产生电路;
各个像素接收电流的供应而发光的发光元件;
施加有来自于上述扫描驱动器的扫描脉冲信号,而加以导通的写入用晶体管;以及
将通过上述写入用晶体管而供应的来自上述数据驱动器的影像数据电压与上述多个斜坡电压中的对应该像素的斜坡电压加以比较,并响应该比较结果,将电流供应至上述发光元件的驱动手段。
2.如权利要求1所述的显示装置,其中上述驱动手段具备:
保持上述影像数据的保持手段;
将上述保持手段所保持的影像数据电压与上述斜坡电压加以比较的比较器;以及
响应上述比较器的输出而导通的驱动用晶体管。
3.如权利要求1所述的显示装置,其中上述斜坡电压产生电路具备:
响应上述扫描脉冲而导通的充电用晶体管;
通过响应上述扫描脉冲而导通的上述充电用晶体管,而充电为第1电压的电容元件;
连接于上述电容元件的斜坡电压输出线;以及
将上述斜坡电压输出线,偏压为比上述第1电压还低的第2电压的偏压手段。
4.如权利要求3所述的显示装置,其中上述第1电压为电源电压,上述第2电压为接地电压。
5.如权利要求3所述的显示装置,其中将充电于上述电容元件的电荷加以放电的放电用晶体管,连接在上述斜坡电压输出线。
6.如权利要求5所述的显示装置,其中将固定电压施加于上述放电用晶体管的栅极。
7.如权利要求5所述的显示装置,其中是以使上述放电用晶体管与上述充电用晶体管成为互补切换的方式,来控制上述放电用晶体管的栅极电压。
8.如权利要求1所述的显示装置,其中上述发光元件为有机电激发光元件。
