Abstract

技术领域
本发明涉及一种等离子显示板,并尤其涉及一种用于计算最佳平均画面水平(以下称为“APL”)的方法和设备,以及一种能使用该方法和设备而改进显示质量的等离子显示器。
背景技术
等离子显示器采用当气体放电所产生的紫外线激活磷材料时,由磷材料产生的可视射线来显示画面。该等离子显示器的优点其是比已经成为一种广泛使用的显示装置的阴极射线管(CRT)薄且轻,并且可能将其制成高清晰度的屏幕且尺寸较大。
利用时分方案来驱动等离子显示器,其中为了实现画面的灰度级,一帧被分成几个具有不同发光频率的子场。每个子场又被分成用于产生均匀放电的复位周期、用于选择放电单元的寻址周期和用于根据放电频率来实现灰度级的保持周期。例如,在期望显示具有256个灰度级的画面时,帧周期16.67ms,对应于1/60秒,被分为八(8)个子场。此外,8个子场的每一个又被再次分为复位周期、寻址周期以及保持周期。在此,对于每一个子场来说,复位周期与寻址周期是完全重复的,但是另一方面,在每一个子场中,其保持周期和放电频率却是根据保持脉冲的数量,按照2n(在此,n=0、1、2、3、4、5、6、7)的速率成比例地增长的。以这种方式,由于每个子场中的保持周期都不相同,因此可以实现画面的灰度级。
在这种等离子显示器中,发光度是根据保持脉冲数目来确定的。因此,如果在平均发光度更亮或更黑的情况下,保持脉冲数在每个子场中都是相等的,则可能由于平均发光度的不均匀而引起诸如画面质量恶化、过多功耗以及等离子显示板(PDP)的损坏等各种问题。例如,对于每个输入图像来说,如果将保持脉冲数设置得较少,那么对比特性就可能会恶化。此外,对于每个输入图像来说,倘若将保持脉冲数设置得较多,那么即使在黑画面中也可改善发光度和对比特性,但是由于功耗和PDP的温度的增加使得PDP会遭到损坏。因此,必须根据输入图像的平均发光度来适当地调节保持脉冲数。这样,等离子显示器包括用于根据APL来控制保持脉冲数的电路。
参考图1,示出了代表相关技术的等离子显示器的方框图。该等离子显示器包括连接在第一反向伽马校正器11A与数据校准器15之间的增益控制器12、误差扩散器13、子场映射单元14、以及连接在第二反向伽马控制器11B与波形发生器17之间的APL计算器16。
该第一和第二反向伽马校正器11A与11B通过反向伽马校正由输入线提供的数字视频数据RGB,而线性地改变图像信号的灰度级值的亮度。
该增益控制器12用于调节由反向伽马校正器11A通过有效增益量所校正的数字视频数据的增益。
该误差扩散器13通过在相邻单元扩散由增益控制器12提供的数字视频数据RGB的量化误差,来精密调节亮度值。由此,该误差扩散器13将该数字视频数据分成整数部分和小数部分,并用Floid-Steinberg系数乘以该小数部分。
该子场映射单元14将由误差扩散器13提供的数字视频数据映射到预先存储的子场格式,并且将所映射的数据提供给数据校准器15。
该数据校准器15将子场映射单元14输入的数字视频数据提供到等离子显示板(此后称为“PDP”)18的数据驱动电路。该数据驱动电路连接到PDP18中的数据电极,通过每根水平线锁存由数据校准器15提供的数字视频数据,并然后由一个水平周期单元将锁存数据提供到PDP18内的数据电极。
该APL计算器16通过帧单元来检测由第二反向伽马校正器11B输入的数字视频数据RGB的平均亮度,也就是APL,并且输出与检测的APL对应的保持脉冲数(NSUS)的信息。例如,假定输入数字视频数据是8比特,那么APL从0到255被分成256级。
该波形发生器17响应于来自APL计算器16的关于保持脉冲数的信息,而产生时间控制信号,并且将该信号提供给图1中没有示出的扫描驱动电路和保持驱动电路。该扫描驱动电路和保持驱动电路响应于由波形发生器17提供的时间控制信号,而向PDP18中的扫描电极和保持电极提供保持脉冲。一般地,PDP中的一个像素包括一组红色、绿色、蓝色子像素。
如果每个红色、绿色和蓝色子像素都被制成相同的大小,那么由于红、绿、蓝磷材料的固有饱和特性之间的不同,而很难在不利用特定电路的情况下最优化等离子显示器的白色平衡和彩色座标系。近来,提出一种其中红色、绿色、和蓝色子像素分别被制成不同大小的不对称单元结构的PDP,用以校正白色平衡和彩色座标系。
但是,由于传统的计算APL的方法是在如上所述的所有子像素具有相同大小的条件下进行的,因此不能在基于不对称单元结构的PDP中计算最佳APL。
发明内容
因此,本发明的一个目的是提供一种用于计算最佳平均画面水平(APL)的方法和设备。
本发明的另一个目的是提供一种用于使用相同的方法和设备改进显示质量的等离子显示器。
为了实现本发明的这些以及其他目的,根据本发明的计算APL的方法包括给红色数据施加第一加权;给绿色数据施加第二加权;给蓝色数据施加第三加权;并且计算具有施加的加权的红色、绿色、蓝色数据的APL。
加权是依据红色、绿色、蓝色子像素的大小而分别确定的。
加权在每一个红色、绿色、蓝色数据中具有不同的值。
在本方法中,施加加权的步骤包括给红色数据乘以第一加权;给绿色数据乘以第二加权;并且给蓝色数据乘以第三加权。

以下,将参照图4和5对本发明的优选实施例进行详细描述。
参考图4,示出了根据本发明一个实施例的等离子显示器。该等离子显示器包括用于给数字视频数据RGB执行反向伽马校正的反向伽马校正器1A至1F、增益控制器2A至2C、误差扩散和抖动处理器3A至3C、子场映射单元4A至4C、以及连接在反向伽马校正器1A至1C与数据驱动电路之间的数据校准器5、以及连接在反向伽马连接器1D至1F与未示出的PDP的扫描和保持驱动电路之间的乘法器8A至8C、APL计算器6和波形发生器7。

在图5中,假定该传统方法通过将114(=4+100+10)除以3而计算得到APL的值为38。
相反,本发明计算APL的方法是考虑其中红色、绿色和蓝色单元的每一大小不同的不对称单元结构或磷材料的固有饱和特性而将红色、绿色和蓝色数据分别乘以预定加权WR、WG和WB。例如,如果红色、绿色和蓝色单元的加权分别为0.8、1.2和1,那么本发明的方法是通过用133.2(=(4*0.8)+(100*1.2)+(10*1))除以3而计算得到最佳APL值44。
如上所述,根据本发明的计算APL的方法和设备能够考虑其中红色、绿色和蓝色单元大小各不相同的不对称单元结构或磷材料的固有饱和特性而实现最佳APL。结果,根据本发明的等离子显示器能够使不对称单元结构的PDP内的白色平衡和彩色座标系最优化。
虽然已经通过以上附图中所示的实施例解释了本发明,但是本领域普通技术人员应该理解本发明并不限制为这些实施例,而且应该理解在不脱离本发明精神的情况下可以作出本发明的各种变形或更改。例如,本发明不仅能够应用于等离子显示器而且也能够应用于平板显示器(FPD),诸如有机电子发光显示器(OLED)或液晶显示器。因此,本发明的范围应该由所附的权利要求及其等同物来限定。

1.一种用于计算平均画面值(APL)的方法,包括:
给红色数据施加第一加权;
给绿色数据施加第二加权;
给蓝色数据施加第三加权;和
计算具有该施加的加权的红色、绿色和蓝色数据的APL。
2.根据权利要求1的方法,其中该加权是依据红色、绿色和蓝色子像素的大小而分别确定的。

11.根据权利要求8的设备,其中该用于施加加权的装置包括:
用于给红色数据乘以第一加权的第一乘法器;
用于给绿色数据乘以第二加权的第二乘法器;和
用于给蓝色数据乘以第三加权的第三乘法器。
12.根据权利要求11的设备,其中该APL计算器计算红色数据的第一APL、绿色数据的第二APL和蓝色数据的第三APL;并且将红色、绿色和蓝色数据的第一、第二、第三APLs相加得到它们的总和;并且计算该总和的平均值。
13.根据权利要求8的设备,其中该加权是可以变化的。
14.根据权利要求8的设备,其中该加权是可以由用户改变的。
15.一种等离子显示器,包括:
用于给红色、绿色和蓝色数据分别施加第一、第二和第三加权的装置;
用于计算具有该施加的加权的红色数据、绿色数据和蓝色数据的APL的APL计算器;和
用于利用该APL显示画面的驱动电路。
16.根据权利要求15的等离子显示器,其中该加权是依据红色、绿色和蓝色子像素的大小分别确定的。
17.根据权利要求15的等离子显示器,其中该加权在红色、绿色、蓝色数据中分别具有不同的值。
18.根据权利要求15的等离子显示器,其中该用于施加加权的装置包括:
用于给红色数据乘以第一加权的第一乘法器;
用于给绿色数据乘以第二加权的第二乘法器;和
用于给蓝色数据乘以第三加权的第三乘法器。
19.根据权利要求18的等离子显示器,其中该APL计算器计算红色数据的第一APL、绿色数据的第二APL和蓝色数据的第三APL,累加红色、绿色和蓝色数据的第一、第二、第三APLs以得到它们的总和,并且计算该总和的平均值。
20.根据权利要求19的等离子显示器,其中该驱动电路根据该平均值而有区别地控制保持脉冲数。
21.根据权利要求15的方法,其中该加权可以由用户改变。
