Abstract

技术领域
本发明涉及具有用于输入字符的装置的便携电子设备,并且特别的,但不是唯一的,应用于例如移动电话、数据终端和寻呼机这样的便携式无线设备,以及手持式计算机。
技术背景
诸如移动电话这样的便携式电子设备设计得越来越小。与此同时,日益需求将诸如字母数字文本的字符输入到这类设备中,例如用于移动中的电子邮件通讯。因此需要一个易于操作的并能够典型地处理40个或者更多字符的小型的人机接口。
实现小型化的一个公知的方法是使用例如,可以在标准的QUERY键盘结构中安排的小型键。但是,由于便携式电子设备制造的较小,这样的小型键盘结构变得越来越难于操作。
实现小型化的另一个公知的方法是通过使用多字符键来减少操作键的数目,重复地按一个键,或者在不同的持续时间内连续地按一个键,从而输入不同的字符。
还有另一个公知的方法是使用光标控制键和一个‘回车键(enter)’从显示的字母表中选择字符。
后两种方法输入慢且容易出错。
在EP0840934B中公开了另一种方法,使用多字符键的单一按压来输入各个字符,通过压力点来确定输入的字符。但是,使用多个这类操作键快速并且准确地输入字符要求熟练度和经验。
发明的技术方案
本发明的目的是提供向便携式电子设备输入字符的改进。
本发明提供一种便携式电子设备,其具有用于选择输入到该设备中的字符的字符选择装置,该字符选择装置包括一个第一键和多个第二键,第一键具有N个转换触点,其中N≥2,并且多个第二键的每一个都具有一单独的转换触点,其中通过第一键的N个转换触点中的一个与多个第二键中的一个键的单独转换触点的结合来选择N个字符中的一个。
在本发明的一个实施例中,第一键具有四个转换触点,例如通过一个四方向摇杆开关来完成,在开关中央的周围放射状地配置四个触点。

现在参照附图,通过举例来描述本发明,附图1表明本发明的移动电话。
本发明的实施例
参考如图1中的一个包括显示器4和按键的移动电话1。按键区包括具有两个或更多转换触点,如所示的四个转换触点的第一键3,每一个触点可以通过接触和按下该键的不同区域来选定。在图1中该第一键的四个不同区域用指向移动电话的上、下、左和右四个方向的箭头来标记。所述按键区还包括每个都具有单独转换触点的多个第二键2。下面描述使用第一键和第二键来选择输入到移动电话中的字符,包括拨打的电话号码。所述按键区还包括可以用来执行控制功能例如“接通”,“断开”的附加键5,以开始传送消息和阅读接收的消息。附加键5也可以与第一键3和第二键2结合使用来完成控制功能,但是执行控制功能的方法在此说明书中没有描述,因为它们对于理解本发明不是必需的。此外,显示器4可以包括图标来帮助用户执行控制功能,但是在附图1中未标出这些图标。
在使用时,第二键2可以单独操纵来选择输入到移动电话中的一个“主要”字符。例如,它可以便于输入数字0..9,*和#以拨打电话号码以及将这些数字和符号输入到一消息中。另外的“次要”字符,例如字母字符,标点符号和标记,可以通过将第一键3的四个转换触点之一和多个第二键2中的一个键的单独转换触点相结合来选择。
在附图1中,多个第二键2中的每一个上标记了主要字符,可以通过单独操纵这些键来选择主要字符,并且当这些键的转换触点与第一键3的四个转换触点中的一个相结合时,可以选择到四个次要字符。方便的是,对于多个第二键2中每个键的这些次要字符的标记位置与第一键3的标记箭头方向相对应,因此当触动或者按下第一键3的相应区域时,所述位置表明哪一个字符被选中。
下面是操作本发明的移动电子设备的一个方法。用户的一只手握着移动电话同时这只手的拇指轻轻地搁在第一键3上,或将拇指悬在第一键3的上面,同时用另一只手的一个或多个手指来操作多个第二键2。通过单独操纵第二键2中的一个键选择每一个主要的字符。通过采用第一键3的一个转换触点与多个第二键2中的一个键的单个转换触点相结合来选择每一个次要字符。这两个触点的初始选定不必正好发生在同一时刻;这种被选定触点的结合确定选择哪一个字符,无论这两个触点的哪一个首先被选定都必须一直被保持直到另一个触点也被选定。
当各个次要字符被选择时,向用户显示提供的选择确认,并且用户可以通过在释放第一键3之前释放当前启动的多个第二键2中时一个来认可该选择。通过在释放当前启动的多个第二键2中的一个键之前释放第一键3可以在认可之前取消这种选择。
在这一方法中,操作一个多转换触点键所需的灵活性会被限制为一个单一的键,通过使用一指定手指或拇指来操作而无需这些手指或拇指在键之间有任何移动。另一只手的手指可以在多个第二键2中的每一个之间移动并且只要求足够的灵活性来操作单一转换触点键。
根据上述实现过程,按键区包括一个具有N个转换触点的第一键3,以及其中的每一个均具有单独转换触点的n个第二键2,该按键区可用于输入(N+1)×n个不同字符。
上述输入字符的方法可用于例如,组成要发送的消息或用于将数据输入到电话地址簿工具中。如果要组成用于发送的消息,那么输入该消息,并且如果需要就进行编辑,然后可以通过例如,附加键5中的一个来启动发送。
任意地,通过键的结合可以选择每一个字符,无需考虑用一个单独键来选择主要字符。
任意地,可以将第一键3设置在除多个第二键2之外的便携式电子设备的不同表面。例如,可以将第一键3设置在移动电话的一侧使用户的拇指便于操作。
任意地,可以将键标记设置在远离用户接触的键表面。
在本发明的说明书和权利要求中一个元素前面的单词“一(a)”或“一(an)”不排除多个这类元素的出现。此外,单词“包括”不排除其他元素的出现或所列出步骤外的步骤。
通过阅读本发明所公开的内容,对于本领域的普通技术人员其他修改形式是显而易见的。这些修改可以涉及在便携式电子设备中字符输入领域公知的其它特征,以及可以取代或补充这里已经描述的特征。

Claims (3)

1.一种便携式电子设备,具有用于选择向设备输入的字符的字符选择装置,该字符选择装置包括一个第一键和多个第二键,第一键具有N个转换触点,其中N≥2,以及多个第二键中的每一个键具有一个单独的转换触点,其中可以通过采用第一键的N个转换触点中的一个与多个第二键中的一个键的单独转换触点相结合来选择N个字符中的一个。
2.如权利要求1所述的设备,其中通过单独操纵多个第二键中的一个键来选择一个字符。
3.如权利要求1或2所述的设备,其中N=4。
