技术领域
本发明一般地涉及用于使访问内容变得方便的电子节目指南(EPGs),更具体来说,涉及为处理可扩展标记语言(XML)文档形式的与内容相关的信息而对EPGs进行配置的技术。
背景技术
EPGs是用于管理日益增长的可从诸如广播、卫星、有线电视和因特网获得的大批内容的基本工具。众所周知,EPGs一般与电视机、机顶盒、个人录像机(PVRs)或其它类似设备相关联,能向这类设备的用户提供关于可获得的内容的详细信息,包括标题、传输时间、演员名单、评级、推荐意见等等。
现有EPGs的一个严重问题是,没有一种机制可用来在生成内容的广泛不同的应用之间提供足够的兼容。结果,由一个应用为某个具有特定类型的EPG设备生成的内容的配置方式可能不适合被另一个有不同类型的EPG的设备来处理。因此一般要求不同的设备有不同的EPGs,每个被专门配置得适合于对应设备可访问的特定内容。这个常规的方法要求多余地复制EPG资源,不适当地限制了用户对内容相关信息的使用。
用标准格式来在诸如因特网的计算机网络上传递内容也是众所周知的。这样的一种标准格式的例子是可扩展标记语言(XML),对该格式的说明见XML 1.0(第二版)(World WideConsortium(W3C)Recommandation,2000年10月,www.ws.org/TR/REC-xml),本文中采用其作为参考。然而,XML和其它类似的标准格式经常不能充分地捕获在不同应用的内容生成中使用的语义。例如,在EPG域名的语义中有相当多的多样性(heterogeneity),反映了系统开发者之间在这个领域缺乏一致。因此,在缺少难以获得的对语义定义的特定事先协议的情况下,不同来源的XML文档集合和对应的配备EPG的设备一般将没有所需要的交互操作性。
从以上介绍中显然可知,本技术领域中需要这样一些技术,它们允许不同来源的不同类型的内容能以适合于由不同EPGs有效处理的标准方式来配置,同时避免上述的与常规方法相关联的问题。
发明内容
本发明通过提供用于处理用参考信息模型(RIM)配置的可扩展标记语言(XML)文档和其它内容相关信息的电子节目指南而满足上述需要。RIM被设计得使得XML文档和其它内容相关信息能据此而以一致的方式生成,以便适合于被各种不同的EPG应用所处理。
按照本发明的一个方面,至少一部分内容相关信息被配置得与RIM的对应各部分一致,如此配置的这部分内容相关信息由此适合于被不同的EPG应用处理。
RIM最好包含多个信息类,并用属性、关系和状态规定类的特性(properties)。例如,可以将类的实例配置成面向对象编程格式的对象,一个或多个对象可以含有以属性表示的结构。在一个说明性的实施例中,RIM包括多个枚举元素(enumeration elements)和多个类元素(class elements),类元素中给定的一个与枚举元素的至少一个子集以及其余类元素的至少一个子集相关联。例如,内容的给定类元素可以是一个程序类元素,其余的类元素可以包括电影、片段(episode)、Personnel(人员)、演员表(cast)、信誉(credits)、站(station)和指定市场区域。
按照本发明的另一个方面,RIM可以用一个递归过程来生成,在递归过程中,通过修改前面的版本生成逐渐地更包容的(inclusive)版本,以支持另外的数据规格。例如,可以用数据规格的第一集合生成RIM的初始版本,然后用至少一个数据规格第二集合由初始版本生成RIM的至少一个后继版本。可以定期地按照一个或多个更新过的数据规格集合更新该RIM的后继版本,这样就能获得更新的说明。
按照本发明的另一个方面,可以将内容相关信息从不符合RIM的第一格式转化成符合RIM的第二格式。第一格式的内容相关信息可以包含用于不是根据RIM的类型的REP应用的一个或多个文档,并且随后可以被转换成需要的符合RIM的格式。转换可以利用至少是部分地利用RIM和从第一格式的内容相关信息导出的模式(schema)而生成的XML样式表单(style sheet)。
本发明的技术方案包括:
(一)一种用于处理内容相关信息以便将其传递给被配置成支持第一类型的第一电子节目指南的处理设备的方法,该内容相关信息用于不同的电子节目指南,该方法包含下述步骤:
使用一个具有该内容相关信息的参考信息模型;和
把至少一部分该内容相关信息配置成与该参考信息模型的对应的各部分一致,从而使所配置的这部分内容相关信息适合于被至少该第一类型的第一的电子节目指南处理。
(二)用于处理内容相关信息的装置,该内容相关信息用于传递给被配置成支持第一类型的第一电子节目指南的处理设备,该内容相关信息用于不同的电子节目指南,该装置包含:
处理器,它能把至少一部分内容相关信息配置成与参考信息模型的对应的各部分一致,从而使所配置的这部分内容相关信息适合于被至少第一类型的第一电子节目指南处理;和
与处理器相耦合的存储器,用于至少暂时存储至少一部分内容相关信息。
本发明的优点是,通过使用R IM而保证来自不同源的内容能被不同的EPGs-例如与居住、营业或其它用户地点的不同处理设备相关联的多个EPGs-高效并有效地处理。此外,本发明还允许为用于特定类型的EPGs而开发的XML文档可以高效率地用于其它EPGs。本发明还方便了源自不同开发者的EPG应用之间的适应性要求(conformance claims)的语义验证,并且能改善给定的基于EPG的处理设备的可销售性。此外,以上述方式使用RIM能保证给定设备制造商的生产线的内部一致性。
因此本发明便于处理EPG XML文档和其它内容相关信息,以便以高效的方式得出一致性的结果。
本发明的这些和其它特点和优点将在各附图和以下的详细说明中变得更加明显。

具体实施方式
本文将用一例用于使由电子节目指南(EPGs)处理的与内容相关的信息标准化的信息处理系统和参考信息模型(RIM)来解释本发明。不过应当明白,本发明并不要求使用任何特定的系统、RIM或EPG配置,而是更一般地适用于任何涉及EPG的应用,其中希望对可扩展标记语言(XML)格式或其它类似的标准化格式的文档或其它信息提供改善的处理。
图1表示信息处理系统100,在本示意性实施例中它包括一个连接到外部网络104的住所102。住所102包括许多处理设备110和对应的EPGs112。更具体来说,住所102包括视频游戏控制台110-1、电视机(TV)110-2、个人录像机(PVR)110-3、机顶盒110-4、自动音乐点唱机110-5和相关的音响系统110-6、以及装备有浏览器的个人计算机(PC)110-7。处理设备110-1、110-2、…110-7的每一个分别有一个与之相关联的对应EPG112-1、112-2、…117-2。处理设备110如图所示连接到家庭网络115。
尽管在本实施例中是联系住所102作说明的,本发明可以被用一个或多个处理设备的任何安排来实现,例如远离住所的移动设备或者在营业场所或其它企业内部使用的设备。此外,尽管EPGs 112在图1中被表示为与它们对应的处理设备110是分离的,EPGs一般是在它们对应的设备内实现的。
外部网络104向住所102的处理设备110提供来自一个或多个信息源的内容。网络104可以代表多个常规网络的组合,诸如电话、广播、卫星、有线电视、因特网和其它网络的组合,它们每个通过通信通道115中的给定通道连接到住所102。
举例来说,图中显示了以网络服务器120为形式的一个信息源,不过可以用许多其它信息源来代替网络服务器120或与其结合使用。网络服务器120向住所102的一个或多个处理设备110提供内容服务。与网络服务器120相关联的是EPG122。网络服务器120和其相关联的EPG122可以被配置得能用例如众所周知的因特网协议(IP)和传输控制协议(TCP)在网络104的因特网部分上传输的XML文档的形式向处理设备110传递内容。
本示意性实施例中的EPG122最好包括常规XML分析器以允许由网络服务器120或其它信息源提供的文档中抽取内容相关信息。
XML分析器可以看作是用于方便XML文档处理的软件库。常规XML分析器的例子包括Xerecs-J和Xerecs-C分析器,以及XP分析器。用标准应用程序接口(APIs)来为这些分析器的一个或多个提供预定的接口。这些APIs  包括DOM1.0(其说明见于Document ObjectModel(DOM)Level 1 Specification(第二版),W 3C Recommendation,1998年10月,www.ws.org/TR/REC-DOM-Level-1-19981001,本文中采用作为参考)和SAX(其说明见于SAX 2.0,“The Simple API forXML”,www.megginson.com/SAX/sax.html,本文中采用作为参考)。上述的Xerecs-J和Xerecs-C分析器都实现DOM和SAX APIs,而XP分析器只实现SAX API。
本文中所用的术语“文档”不仅包括任何XML文档,而且包括可以从系统100的信息源传送的、供处理设备110的一个或多个和/或相关联的EPG112使用的任何其它文件或信息安排。
本文中所用的术语“内容相关信息”要作广义的解释,以包括内容本身,以及以内容为特征的信息,并且可以是一个或多个文档的形式。
应当注意的是,图1中的系统100中所示的各单元的安排和配置仅仅是举例。在其它实施例中,也可以使用其它类型的服务器、网络和处理设备。本领域的熟练人员将认识到,本发明的EPG技术不要求这种系统单元的任何特定安排或配置。
按照本发明的一个方面,一个或多个与住所102相关联的EPGs112被配置得能处理用EPG参考信息模型(RIM)生成的XML文档。使用RIM的优点是确保来自不同源的内容能被不同的EPGs-例如图1中的住所102的EPGs112-高有效率和有效地处理。
图2表示按照本发明的示意性实施例的一例RIM 200。如下面将要详细说明的那样,RIM 200可被用来生成适合用于住所102的一个或多个处理设备110的特定类型的文档,例如XML文档。
RIM 200包括如图所示的安排的互相关联的成分,并且被配置得至少部分地模拟一种格式的内容相关信息,该格式类似于Tribune MediaServices的“Data specifications:TV schedules,U.S.”(第二版,Tribune Media Services,1999年1月29日)和TV DataTechnologies中的程序列表(www.tvdata.com)中所描述的格式。上述两个文献被本文引用作为参考。
枚举(enumeration)被用来描述被模拟信息内的常量。更具体来说,RIM 200用枚举来描述常量元素202-1、202-2、…202-15。RIM 200进一步包括类元素204、206、208、210、212、214、216和218,代表意思分别是电影、片段、人员、演员表、信誉、站和指定市场区域的信息类。关于例子RIM 200的每个元素的其它细节可参看后附的附录1。
从图2中可见,程序类204直接或间接地与常量元素202-1至202-15相关联。此外,程序类204如所示的那样直接或间接地与其它类206、208、210、212、214、216和218的每一个相关联。
图2中的示意性实施例中的RIM 200是用著名的统一模拟语言(UML-Unified Modeling Language)实现的面向对象的模型。UML是一种优选的模拟语言(modeling language),因为它提供具有能被无歧义地解释的良好定义的语义的模拟符号,但是也可以用其它模拟语言来生成按照本发明的RIM。也应当注意的是,通过使用符合对象约束语言(OCL-Object Constraint Language)的UML工具,可以增强示意性实施例的模拟方法,www.omg.org上所述的那样。
RIM 200也可以利用常规信息模型技术,诸如“消息开发框架”(Message Development Framework)(HL 7 Modeling and MethodologyCommittee,3.2版,1999年4月)中描述的技术。
示意性实施例中的RIM 200包含一个对与一个或多个类型的内容相关联的信息要求的结构化规格(specification)。RIM 200表达所要求的信息类,以及那些类的特性包括属性、关系和状态。
更具体来说,可以将RIM 200看作一个关于使内容相关信息进行交换中对信息要求的结构化规格。RIM 200按照规定的语义和句法协议(consensus)提供被传输信息的一致性的外观以及与其它信息的关系。这保证所交换的内容相关信息是一致的并能被不同的EPG应用使用。本文中所用的术语“EPG应用”旨在包括任何一个与给定的处理设备相结合而实现的EPG的特定实例,例如图1中所示的EPGs 112或122中所给定的一个,也包括这些或其它EPGs的部分或组合。
RIM 200有益地包括代表适合于由EPG处理的内容相关信息的良好定义的类并规定这些类之间的关系。在典型的实现中,如从上述图2的例子中显而易见的那样,这些类的各个实例以对象的形式存在,并包含以属性表示的结构。
图3表示可以用图2中所示的RIM 200生成不同类型的XML文档的方式。在所示过程中,RIM 200被用来为图1系统的三个不同处理设备(即图1中的各个单元110-7、110-2和110-3所代表的PC、TV和PVR)生成XML文档。更具体来说,操作302A、302B和302C使用如图所示落在对应的虚框内的、各自的第一、第二和第三部分的RIM200。操作302A、302B和302C分别生成不同的XML模式304A、304B和304C。XML模式304A、304B和304C在图中也记为XML模式304A、XML模式304B和XML模式304C,它们然后被用来分别为PC、TV和PVR生成XML文档集合306A、306B和306C。模式304A、304B和304C可以代表例如如用于特定设备上的内容的表示的标准体(standardsbodies)所确定的用于特定处理设备的标准EPG配置部分。
这个过程有益地提供了各XML文档之间或者为与不同处理设备相关联的不同EPG应用生成的其它内容相关信息之间所需的一致性。本发明在其它实施例中能为在一个处理设备上运行的各不同EPG应用提供类似的优点。
图3的过程可以至少部分地用另外的常规XML文档生成工具实现,这些生成工具诸如是可从Rational(www.ratioal.com)、Authority(www.ratioal.com)和其它公司购买的生成工具。

按照本发明的另一个方面,提供一个用于生成、调整和更新RIM的递归过程。
图4是这个递归过程的流程图。在这个过程中,在生成步骤404中用一个美国数据规格集合402来生成一个美国EPG RIM 406。这种美国EPG RIM的例子是前文结合图2和3描述过的RIM 200。然后在调整步骤408中用欧洲EPG数据规格410来调整美国EPG RIM 406。调整步骤408的结果是美国和欧洲EPG RIM 412。美国和欧洲EPG RIM412然后在调整步骤414中利用全球(global)EPG数据规格进行自我调整。调整步骤414的结果是全球EPG RIM 418。全球EPG RIM 418随后在改进步骤420中根据更新过的EPG数据规格422而被更新。
按照本发明的另一个方面,提供一个用于转换现有内容相关信息供其它EPGs使用的过程。
图5是上述过程的示意性实施例的流程图。这个过程的实施例利用RIM 200来转换一个为用于“外部”EPG而生成的XML文档集合,以便适合在另一个不同类型的EPG上处理。图5的过程包括步骤501、502、503、504和505,分别也笼统地记为步骤1至5。
在步骤501中,生成或者另外从外部XML文档集合510获得工作XML模式。步骤501的结果是一个或多个用于外部EPG的XML文档512。
在图5的过程中使用一个EPG RIM 514。非限定性地假设EPG RIM514与一个或多个特定EPG开发者-例如飞利浦电子公司(以下简称“飞利浦”)相关联。文档510在本实施例中被称作是“外部的”,是因为假设它们是与该特定EPG开发者之外的另一个EPG开发者相关联的。
在步骤502中,例如通过检查语法和语义一致性而将外部EPG的XML模式512与EPG RIM 514相关。然后,在步骤503中,从在步骤502中确定的EPG RIM 514的适当子集中生成一个或多个飞利浦XML模式516。
步骤504用外部XML模式512和飞利浦XML模式516生成XML式样(patterns)和XSLt转换规则。这个步骤的结果是一个用于将外部XML EPG文档510转换成符合飞利浦EPG RIM 514的新XML文档520的XML样式表单518。可以如步骤505中所示的那样将XML样式表单518应用到常规XSLt转换引擎,以便将外部XML EPG文档转换成新的符合飞利浦RIM的XML EPG文档520。
因此图5的过程将外部EPG XML模式512映射到EPG RIM 514的一个适当的子集,以便创建新的符合RIM的模式516。符合RIM的模式516被进一步处理,以生成被用来将外部EPG XML文档510转换成符合RIM的文档520的XML样式表单518。
使用如上所述的RIM来生成EPG XML文档与常规技术相比具有许多重要优点。例如,它允许为用于特定类型的EPGs而开发的XML文档能被高效地用于其它的EPGs。此外该方法还方便了来自不同源的应用之间的EPG XML一致性要求的语义验证。适当程度的一致性也能改善给定的基于EPG的处理设备的可销售性。此外,以上述方式使用RIM能保证给定设备制造商的生产线的内部一致性。
因此本发明便于处理EPG XML文档和其它内容相关的信息,以便以高效的方式得出一致性的结果。
图6表示可以在其中实施本发明的技术配置EPG的处理设备600的例子。
设备600包括处理器602和存储器604,它们在一个或多个系统总线集605的至少一部分上通信。显示器606和输入/输出(I/O)设备608也使用系统总线集605的至少一部分。
设备600可代表图1的处理系统的设备110的一个或多个,或者任何其它类型的采用EPG的处理设备。设备600的单元可以是这些设备的常规单元。
例如,处理器602可以代表微处理器、中央处理单元(CPU)、数字信号处理器(DSP)、专用集成电路(ASIC)、以及这些或其它的处理设备的部分或者组合。存储器604一般是电子存储器,但是可以包含其它类型的存储装置,诸如基于盘的光学或磁性存储器。
本文所述的EPG技术可以全部或部分地利用以设备600的相应的存储器和处理器单元存储和执行的软件来实现。例如,图1的系统的一个或多个EPGs 112可以至少部分地利用在存储器604中存储的并被处理器602执行的一个或多个软件程序来实现。这类软件在例如存储器604和处理器604的设备单元中被存储以及执行的具体方式是本领域中已知的,因此本文不作详细说明。
应当注意的是,设备600可以包括图中没有显示的其它单元、或者能够提供本文所述的EPG处理功能的其它类型的单元或单元组合。
图6的处理设备也可以被用来例如利用结合图3、4和5所述的技术处理用于向另一个配备EPG的处理设备传递的内容相关的信息。

Claims (18)

1.一种用于处理内容相关信息以便将其传递给被配置成支持第一类型的第一电子节目指南(112)的处理设备(110,600)的方法,该内容相关信息用于不同的电子节目指南,该方法包含下述步骤:
使用一个具有该内容相关信息的参考信息模型(200);和
把至少一部分该内容相关信息配置成与该参考信息模型(200)的对应的各部分一致,从而使所配置的这部分内容相关信息适合于被至少该第一类型的第一电子节目指南(112)处理。
2.权利要求1的方法,其中,所配置的这部分内容相关信息适合于被第一类型的第一电子节目指南和至少一个不同于第一类型的第二类型的第二电子节目指南处理。
3.权利要求1的方法,其中,该内容相关信息包含可扩展标记语言的一个或多个文档(306,510,520)。
4.权利要求1的方法,其中,参考信息模型包含多个信息类,并用一个或多个属性、关系和状态来规定这些类的特性。
5.权利要求1的方法,其中,参考信息模型包含多个元素,其中包括一个或多个枚举元素(202)和一个或多个类元素(204,206,208,210,212,214,216,218),该类元素中给定的一个与该枚举元素中的至少一个子集以及其余类元素中的至少一个子集相关联。

10.权利要求9的方法,其中,该配置步骤进一步包含生成多个不同的模式,每个模式是与一个或多个第一类型的第一电子节目指南和一个不同于第一类型的第二类型的第一电子节目指南相关联的,每个模式被用来生成一个或多个包含内容相关信息的文档。
11.权利要求1的方法,其中,参考信息模型是利用一个递归过程生成的,在该递归过程中,使用第一数据规格集合来生成该模型的初始版本,然后使用至少一个第二数据规格集合由该初始版本生成该模型的至少一个后继版本。
12.权利要求11的方法,其中,按照一个或多个更新过的数据规格集合(422)来定期更新该模型的至少一个后继版本。
13.权利要求1的方法,其中,该配置步骤包含将内容相关信息从不符合参考信息模型的第一格式转化成符合参考信息模型的第二格式。
14.权利要求13的方法,其中,第一格式的内容相关信息包含供一个不符合该参考信息模型的类型的电子节目指南使用的一个或多个文档,并且其中将该文档转换成第二格式,以便至少能被第一类型的电子节目指南使用。
15.权利要求13的方法,其中,该转换步骤利用至少是部分地利用第一格式的内容相关信息和参考信息模型生成的可扩展标记语言的样式表单。
16.权利要求1的方法,该方法还包含下述步骤:
接收内容相关信息,该内容相关信息根据所述使用步骤和配置步骤而被配置;和
处理内容相关信息以便在处理装置生成对应的输出。
17.用于处理内容相关信息的装置,该内容相关信息用于传递给被配置成支持第一类型的第一电子节目指南(112)的处理设备(110,600),该内容相关信息用于不同的电子节目指南,该装置包含:
处理器(602),它能把至少一部分内容相关信息配置成与参考信息模型(200)的对应的各部分一致,从而使所配置的这部分内容相关信息适合于被至少第一类型的第一电子节目指南处理;和
与处理器相耦合的存储器(604),用于至少暂时存储至少一部分内容相关信息。
18.权利要求17的装置,其中该处理器(602)还能执行第一类型的第一电子节目指南(112)的至少一部分以便处理该已配置的内容相关信息。
