Detailed Description
For the purpose of making the objects, technical solutions and advantages of the present invention more apparent, the technical solutions of the present invention will be clearly and completely described below with reference to the accompanying drawings, and it is apparent that the described embodiments are some embodiments of the present invention, not all embodiments. The inventors noted during the course of the invention that:
in the server application scenario, the SPS firmware, as a management platform of the server, may be used to monitor, configure, and manage the server system, and simplify server management tasks and improve reliability, security, and performance of the server system. For example: SPS firmware may control allocation of interfaces on the PCH (e.g., universal serial bus (Universal Serial Bus, USB) interface, serial advanced technology attachment (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment, SATA) hard disk interface, high speed serial computer expansion bus standard (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express, PCIE) interface, etc.), rate adaptation of the interface buses, power consumption control, power management controller (Power Management Controller, PMC) control, etc. through cross-over (Strap) signals.
However, some configuration information in the SPS firmware may be different according to the collocation of the servers and the usage scenario, or some data in the SPS firmware may affect the usage and need to be cleaned in time. At this time, if the whole BIOS flash is updated and is validated by restarting, not only the continuity of the user service but also the working efficiency and the stability of the server use are affected.
In the related art, the Intel seamless out-of-band (Intel Seamless OOB) based basic service may support online upgrades to BIOS/SPS/CPU microcode. However, these current approaches only upgrade the entire area of SPS firmware, which can affect the continuity of user traffic, thereby reducing the efficiency of operation.
Based on this, the embodiment of the invention provides a method and a device for updating a target area of a server platform service firmware on line, and under the condition that the server platform service firmware is in a repair mode and the control right of a basic input/output system is taken over by a baseboard management controller, updating the target area to be updated in the server platform service firmware by adopting an updating file. Therefore, the continuity of the user service is not affected in the process of online updating the target area of the server platform service firmware, and the working efficiency is improved.

OOB management refers to managing and controlling a server through an independent management channel, except for the normal running operating system of the server.
Based on the system shown in fig. 1, a method for updating a target area of a server platform service firmware based on out-of-band online according to an embodiment of the present invention is described below with reference to fig. 2 and 3.
Referring to fig. 2, fig. 2 is a flowchart illustrating a method for updating a target area of a server platform service firmware based on out-of-band online according to an embodiment of the invention. The method is applied to the baseboard management controller 21 in fig. 1, and as shown in fig. 2, the method may include the steps of:
Step 201, determining information, update operation and update file of a target area of the server platform service firmware; the target area is stored in a flash memory chip of the basic input/output system;
step 202, under the condition that the server platform service firmware is in a repair mode and the control right of the basic input/output system flash memory chip is taken over by the baseboard management controller, updating the target area by adopting the information of the updating file and the target area.
In step 201, the region of the server platform service firmware is stored in the bios flash memory chip, and the information of the target region of the server platform service firmware is determined, so that the region to be updated (i.e., the target region) can be distinguished from the region of the server platform service firmware stored in the bios flash memory chip.
For the update operation, if the update operation is modification, the update file is an update file for modification, which is prefabricated by a user; if the update operation is erasure, the update file is an update file that the user previously made for erasure, for example, an update file of all 0 xFF.
In step 202, the server platform services firmware is in repair (Recovery) mode, i.e., the server platform services firmware may be modified. The control right of the basic input/output system flash memory chip is taken over by the baseboard management controller, namely, the baseboard management controller takes over the control of the basic input/output system flash memory chip.
In one possible implementation, the baseboard management controller sends a first switching instruction to the server platform service firmware, where the first switching instruction is used to instruct the server platform service firmware to switch from a normal mode to a repair mode, so that the server platform service firmware can be modified. The baseboard management controller sends a take-over instruction to the basic input/output system flash memory chip, and the take-over instruction is used for indicating the control right of the basic input/output system flash memory chip to be taken over by the baseboard management controller, so that the baseboard management controller can control the basic input/output system flash memory chip.
Optionally, the control right of the basic input output system flash memory chip may include: the control right of the serial peripheral interface of the basic input/output system flash memory chip and the unique read-write right of the basic input/output system flash memory chip can shield other devices from reading and writing the basic input/output system flash memory chip through the serial peripheral interface of the input/output system flash memory chip.
Under the condition that the service firmware of the server platform can be modified and the baseboard management controller takes over the control of the basic input/output system flash memory chip, the update file and the information of the target area are adopted to update the target area, so that the update operation can be independently carried out on the target area of the service firmware of the server platform, and the data of other areas can not be influenced. Therefore, the continuity of the user service is not affected in the process of online updating the target area of the server platform service firmware, and the working efficiency is improved.
The method for updating the target area of the server platform service firmware on line provided by the embodiment of the invention comprises the steps that firstly, a baseboard management controller determines the information, updating operation and updating files of the target area of the server platform service firmware, and the target area is stored in a basic input and output system flash memory chip, so that the target area of the server platform service firmware which needs to be updated in the basic input and output system flash memory chip can be distinguished; then, when the service firmware of the server platform is in a repair mode and the control right of the flash memory chip of the basic input/output system is taken over by the baseboard management controller, namely, the service firmware of the server platform can be modified, and the baseboard management controller takes over the control of the flash memory chip of the basic input/output system, the update file and the information of the target area are adopted to update the target area, the update operation can be independently carried out on the target area of the service firmware of the server platform, the data of other areas can not be influenced, and thus, the continuity of user business can not be influenced in the process of online updating the target area of the service firmware of the server platform, thereby improving the working efficiency.
In an example embodiment, step 201 may include the sub-steps of:
step 2011, receiving a user update instruction sent by a target tool, wherein the user update instruction carries information of a target area and update operation;
in step 2012, in response to the user update command, the information and the update operation of the target area are parsed from the user update command, the update file is obtained from the update catalog of the target tool, and the update file is loaded into the executable memory of the baseboard management controller.
In step 2011, the target tool is illustratively an Utool, and since the Utool can interact with the baseboard management controller, the user determines the target area to be updated, and whether the update operation is to update the content or erase the content, and creates an update file according to the update requirement. Then, the user can send a user update instruction to the baseboard management controller through the Utool, wherein the user update instruction carries information of the target area and update operation so as to inform the baseboard management controller of updating the target area through out-of-band.
In step 2012, the user copies the update file to the update catalog of the target tool in advance. The baseboard management controller responds to the user update instruction, firstly analyzes the information and update operation of the target area from the user update instruction, then acquires the update file from the update catalog of the target tool, and loads the update file into the executable memory of the baseboard management controller.
In this embodiment, the baseboard management controller may parse the information and the update operation of the target area from the user update instruction through the target tool, and then obtain the update file from the update catalog of the target tool and load the update file into the executable memory of the baseboard management controller, so that the information, the update operation and the update file of the target area may be obtained.
In one example embodiment, the information of the target area includes a start address of the target area and a size of the target area; step 202 may include: and starting to execute the updating operation from the starting address of the target area by adopting the updating file until the area size of the updating operation reaches the size of the target area.
Specifically, the configuration information of different areas of the server platform service firmware in the bios flash chip is shown in table 1:
table 1 server platform service firmware configuration information table
As can be seen from table 1, each region has its one-to-one starting address.
In this embodiment, the update file is used to start the update operation from the start address of the target area until the area size of the update operation reaches the size of the target area, and the updated area can be determined as the target area by the start address of the target area and the size of the target area. Therefore, the error update cannot be caused, and the problem of downtime of the server system caused by the update error can be avoided.
In an example embodiment, the method further comprises: after the updating operation is completed, a second switching instruction is sent to the server platform service firmware, and the second switching instruction is used for indicating the server platform service firmware to switch from the repairing mode to the normal mode, so that the server platform service firmware can be restored to the normal mode.
In an example embodiment, the method further comprises: and determining whether the server platform service firmware needs to be restarted according to the storage type of the target area, and manually restarting the server platform service firmware without manually judging whether the server platform service firmware needs to be restarted, so that the updating efficiency of the target area can be improved, and the working efficiency is improved.
In an example embodiment, determining whether the server platform service firmware needs to be restarted according to the storage type of the target area includes: under the condition that the storage type of the target area is data, determining that the server platform service firmware does not need to be restarted; and under the condition that the storage type of the target area is the configuration information, determining that the server platform service firmware needs to be restarted.
Specifically, as can be seen from table 1, some areas store data, and some areas store configuration information. Areas storing data may cause downtime of the server system if erased or modified. The area for storing the configuration information is required to be configured correctly according to different configuration requirements, otherwise, unexpected abnormal phenomena are caused.
And, some areas are variable, and some areas are constant. For the variable areas, the update can be immediately effective, and some data to be cleaned is placed in the areas. For unchanged areas, mainly storage configurations, a restart of the server platform service firmware may be required to take effect.
If the storage type of the target area is data, the target area is changeable and can be immediately validated after being updated, so that the server platform service firmware does not need to be restarted.
If the storage type of the target area is configuration information, then the target area is unchanged and the server platform service firmware may need to be restarted to be effective.
In this embodiment, if the storage type of the target area is data, the server platform service firmware does not need to be restarted; if the storage type of the target area is the configuration information, the server platform service firmware needs to be restarted, and whether the server platform service firmware needs to be restarted or not can be rapidly judged according to the storage type of the target area, so that the updating efficiency of the target area is improved.
In one example embodiment, after determining that the server platform services firmware needs to be restarted, the method further comprises: and sending a first restarting instruction to the server platform service firmware under the condition that the storage type of the target area is the configuration information related to the server platform service firmware, wherein the restarting instruction is used for indicating the server platform service firmware to perform restarting operation.
Specifically, if the storage type of the target area is configuration information, the server platform service firmware needs to be restarted, and after determining that the server platform service firmware needs to be restarted, the type of the configuration information is determined. If the type of the configuration information is the configuration information related to the server platform service firmware, the server platform service firmware is only restarted, namely the baseboard management controller sends a first restarting instruction to the server platform service firmware. The server platform service firmware responds to the first restarting instruction to perform restarting operation.
In this embodiment, if the type of the configuration information is determined to be the configuration information related to the server platform service firmware, only the server platform service firmware is restarted, so that the update of the configuration information related to the server platform service firmware in the target area is enabled.
In another example embodiment, after determining that the server platform services firmware needs to be restarted, the method further comprises: and sending a second restarting instruction to the server under the condition that the storage type of the target area is the configuration information related to the basic input and output system, wherein the second restarting instruction is used for indicating the server to perform restarting operation.
Specifically, if the storage type of the target area is configuration information, the server platform service firmware needs to be restarted, and after determining that the server platform service firmware needs to be restarted, the type of the configuration information is determined. If the type of the configuration information is the configuration information related to the basic input and output system, the whole server needs to be restarted, namely the baseboard management controller sends a second restarting instruction to the server. And the server responds to the second restarting instruction to perform restarting operation.
In this embodiment, if the type of the configuration information is determined to be the configuration information related to the bios, the entire server needs to be restarted to validate the update of the configuration information related to the bios in the target area.
In order to more clearly understand the present invention, a method for updating a target area of a server platform service firmware based on out-of-band online is specifically described below by way of specific embodiments.

Step 301, receiving information of a target area, update operation and update files input by a user by using the Utool, wherein the update files are stored in an update catalog of the Utool;
step 302, the Utool generates a user update instruction based on the information of the target area and the update operation, and sends the user update instruction to the baseboard management controller;
step 303, the baseboard management controller responds to the user update instruction, analyzes the information and update operation of the target area from the user update instruction, acquires the update file from the update catalog of the target tool, and loads the update file into the executable memory of the baseboard management controller;
step 304, the baseboard management controller sends a first switching instruction to the server platform service firmware, wherein the first switching instruction is used for indicating the server platform service firmware to switch from a normal mode to a repair mode;
step 305, the baseboard management controller sends a take-over instruction to the basic input/output system flash memory chip, wherein the take-over instruction is used for indicating the control right of the basic input/output system flash memory chip to be taken over by the baseboard management controller;
step 306, the baseboard management controller starts to execute the updating operation from the initial address of the target area by adopting the updating file until the area size of the updating operation reaches the size of the target area;
Step 307, after finishing the updating operation, the baseboard management controller sends a second switching instruction to the server platform service firmware, where the second switching instruction is used to instruct the server platform service firmware to switch from the repair mode to the normal mode;
step 308, sending a restart instruction to the server platform service firmware when the storage type of the target area is the configuration information.
In step 301, a user first determines a target area to be updated and an update operation, and creates an update file according to an update requirement. The user may then input information of the target area to the Utool, update the operation, and store the update file in an update catalog of the Utool. The Utool receives information of a target area, an update operation and an update file input by a user.
In step 302, since the Utool may interact with the baseboard management controller, the Utool generates a user update instruction based on the information of the target area and the update operation, and transmits the user update instruction to the baseboard management controller.
In step 303, the baseboard management controller responds to the user update command, first parses the information of the target area and the update operation from the user update command, then obtains the update file from the update catalog of the target tool, and loads the update file into the executable memory of the baseboard management controller.
In step 304, the baseboard management controller sends a first switching instruction to the server platform service firmware, and the server platform service firmware switches the server platform service firmware from the normal mode to the repair mode in response to the first switching instruction, so that the server platform service firmware can be modified.
In step 305, the baseboard management controller sends a take-over instruction to the bios flash chip, and the bios flash chip responds to the take-over instruction to take over control of the bios flash chip by the baseboard management controller, so that the baseboard management controller can control the bios flash chip.
In step 306, the baseboard management controller starts the update operation from the start address of the target area using the update file until the area size of the update operation reaches the size of the target area, and can determine that the updated area is the target area through the start address of the target area and the size of the target area. Therefore, the error update cannot be caused, and the problem of downtime of the server system caused by the update error can be avoided.
In step 307, the baseboard management controller sends a second switch instruction to the server platform service firmware after completing the update operation. The server platform service firmware responds to the second switching instruction, and switches the server platform service firmware from the repair mode to the normal mode, so that the server platform service firmware can be restored to the normal mode.
In step 308, the server platform services firmware has some areas storing data and some areas storing configuration information.
In one possible implementation manner, if the type of the configuration information is configuration information related to the server platform service firmware, the server platform service firmware is only restarted, that is, the baseboard management controller sends a first restart instruction to the server platform service firmware. The server platform service firmware responds to the first restarting instruction to perform restarting operation.
In another possible implementation, if the type of the configuration information is configuration information related to the bios, the entire server needs to be restarted, that is, the baseboard management controller sends a second restart instruction to the server. And the server responds to the second restarting instruction to perform restarting operation.
In this embodiment, the Utool may obtain the information, update operation and update file of the target area input by the user, the baseboard management controller switches the server platform service firmware from the normal mode to the repair mode through the first switching instruction, and takes over the control right of the basic input/output system flash memory chip by the baseboard management controller through the take-over instruction, and the update operation is performed from the start address of the target area by adopting the update file until the area size of the update operation reaches the size of the target area, so that the target area can be accurately updated, and the problem of server downtime caused by error update is avoided. Therefore, the continuity of the user service is not affected in the process of online updating the target area of the server platform service firmware, and the working efficiency is improved. After the updating operation is completed, the baseboard management controller switches the service firmware of the server platform from the repairing mode to the normal mode through the second switching instruction, so that the service firmware of the server platform can be restored to the normal mode. And restarting the server platform service firmware through a restarting instruction under the condition that the storage type of the target area is the configuration information, so that the updating of the target area is effective.
