The invention discloses a project progress monitoring system based on BIM and a monitoring method thereof, which comprises the steps of obtaining a project prototype diagram to generate the BIM; the BIM acquires a construction plan of each time period and an actual construction project progress; judging whether the difference of the project schedules of the construction plan of each time period exceeds a threshold value or not based on the construction schedule of each time period in the BIM and the project schedule of the actual construction; if so, acquiring the deviation reason, the information of the related responsible personnel and a construction progress adjusting scheme, and redistributing and updating the construction progress; if not, continuing to execute task allocation in the construction plan and counting the completion condition of the construction task. The project progress monitoring system can intuitively embody the construction progress of the building, simultaneously realize the comparison of the actual construction progress and the construction plan, and find the reasons of the construction deviation in time, thereby realizing the high-efficiency management of the construction progress of the building.
