The preparation method of the coal dust suppressant comprises the following steps: sequentially adding sodium carboxymethylcellulose, a surfactant, a corrosion inhibitor, polyacrylamide, sodium sulfate and sodium tetraborate, and fully stirring for 30 minutes to obtain powder; and adding the powder into water while stirring, and continuously stirring for 20-30 minutes after the powder is added. According to the low-cost coal dust suppressant and the preparation method thereof, the sodium tetraborate and the sodium sulfate are added, so that the use of sodium carboxymethylcellulose is reduced to a great extent, and the preparation cost of the dust suppressant is reduced.
