Toy construction set and method of assembling such a toy construction set
Technical Field
The present invention relates to a toy construction set comprising a plurality of toy construction blocks forming a construction with a plurality of coupling sockets arranged in a spatial or planar pattern, and wherein the toy construction block set further comprises a plurality of coupling pins and a flexible sheet with at least one hole, and each coupling pin extends in a longitudinal direction between a first end and a second end, wherein the first end is shaped for releasably attaching the pin to one of the coupling sockets, the second end extends away from the coupling socket in an attachment position of the pin in the socket, and wherein the second end of the pin comprises a head arranged distally on a neck on the second end of the pin, and wherein the neck has a cross-section allowing it to pass freely through the hole.
Toy construction sets are known in various embodiments, and by way of example, U.S. patent application No. 20170106309 discloses a toy construction system in which the head of a coupling pin is spherical and may pass through a hole in a flexible sheet by elastic deformation of the sheet.
U.S. patent No. 2885822 further discloses a toy construction set having a coupling pin with a head sized to prevent the head from moving through a hole in a flexible sheet.
Toy construction sets provide a number of different options for attaching a sheet element to a rigid structure constructed from building blocks.
Disclosure of Invention
On this background, it is an object of the invention to provide a construction kit as described in the introduction and to provide the user with further options to easily build more different constructions with new and interesting functions.
This is obtained by a toy construction set according to claim 1 as follows: by adapting the size and shape of the aperture to the size and shape of the head so that it is not possible to pass the head through the aperture without tearing or causing plastic deformation in the flexible sheet, and by extending the neck between the head and the flange surrounding the pin, and the size and shape of the flange is such that plastic deformation of the flexible sheet is required to pass the flange through the aperture.
Thus, the flexible sheet is easy to attach to the coupling pin, but at the same time, it is impossible to detach from the assembled construction as long as the coupling pin is mounted in the coupling socket.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the head of the coupling pin is shaped like a disc-shaped head having a flat surface on the side of the head where the neck of the coupling pin is arranged and a convex surface on the opposite side. Thus, if a force is applied to the sheet that attempts to pull the sheet over the head, the risk of tearing the flexible sheet is reduced.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the maximum cross-section of the head in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction is larger than the maximum cross-section of the hole in the flexible sheet.
In another preferred embodiment, the largest cross-section of the hole in the flexible sheet and the head in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction are both circular.
Preferably, the construction kit comprises one or more of said building blocks, each building block having a plurality of coupling sockets arranged equidistantly along at least one straight line.
A construction kit according to the invention may advantageously comprise two or more of said building blocks, and at least one connector pin having a first end adapted to be attached to a coupling socket on one of said building blocks, and an opposite end adapted to be attached to a coupling socket on another of said building blocks.
In a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, the flexible sheet is made of an elastically bendable material. Thereby, the bending elasticity of the flexible sheet and the secure attachment of the sheet to the coupling pin provide various new functions without the risk of the flexible sheet disengaging from the coupling pin.
In this relation, the coupling socket is preferably formed by a substantially cylindrical through hole extending through the building block.
The invention also provides a computer readable model comprising computer readable instructions configured to cause an apparatus for performing an additive manufacturing process to manufacture a toy building element as defined above when processed by the apparatus.
Furthermore, the present invention provides a method of assembly at a toy construction kit according to one or more of the preceding claims, wherein the coupling pin is first attached to the flexible sheet by passing the first end of the coupling pin through a hole in the flexible sheet, and then the first end of the coupling pin is attached to the coupling socket of one of the toy construction blocks.

Detailed Description
Fig. 1 shows a very simple embodiment of a toy construction set according to the invention having only a single building block 1, a flexible sheet 2 and a coupling pin 3 adapted to interconnect the building block 1 and the flexible sheet 2 to form a combined construction.
The building block 1 has two legs forming a V-shape and each leg has a row of coupling sockets 4 arranged equidistantly along a straight line, the coupling sockets being formed as cylindrical through holes provided with a recess 5 at each end of the through holes.
At the end of each leg on the building block 1 a coupling socket 4a of a second type is arranged, which coupling socket 4a is formed as a splined through hole.
Building blocks of this type are well known in the art and have many different shapes and sizes allowing a user to construct a variety of different structures, for example by interconnecting two or more such building blocks using connector pins 17 as shown in fig. 4, which connector pins 17 are formed as cylindrical pins having opposite ends extending away from a central flange 18, and due to the cut-outs 20, and the distally arranged end flanges 19 may each be snap-fitted into one coupling socket 4 on two different building blocks, so that the central flange 18 and the end flanges 19 fit into recesses 5 on each end of the coupling socket 4.
In this way, simple, complex and rigid or articulated structures may be constructed, such as toy sailboats, toy tents, toy flagpoles, etc., and by providing the opportunity to mount the sheet 2 on such structures, such toy structures may be constructed to more realistically resemble real sailboats, tents, flagpoles, etc., with the sheet 2 resembling a sail, tent canvas, or banner, respectively.
It will therefore be apparent to those skilled in the art that the present invention is applicable to any such construction and toy construction set.
According to this embodiment of the invention, the sheet 2 has an aperture 10 and may be attached to the building block/construction element 1 by: a substantially cylindrical coupling pin 3 is used as shown in fig. 1 and 3, by inserting a first end 11 of the substantially cylindrical coupling pin 3 through a hole 10 in the sheet 2 and engaging with one of the coupling sockets 4 formed by cylindrical through holes in the building block 1. According to this embodiment of the invention, the head 7 of the coupling pin 3 has a cross-section in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal symmetry axis 12 of the coupling pin 3 that is much larger than the width of the diameter of the circular hole 10 in the sheet, which is firmly attached to the building block 1 due to the fact that the head 7 cannot be passed through the hole 10 without tearing or providing plastic deformation of the sheet material 2.
It will be apparent to a person skilled in the art that, according to the invention, it is possible to design various shapes and sizes of the holes 10 in the sheet 2 and corresponding shapes and sizes of the heads 7 of the coupling pins 3, and to choose a sheet material of the sheet 2 having elasticity such that the heads 7 cannot be passed through the holes 10 without tearing the material of the sheet 2 or at least forming a permanent/plastic deformation of the sheet around the holes 10.
As an example, the sheet 2 shown in fig. 1 and 2 also has a second hole 10a which is triangular with side lengths such that it allows the below-mentioned intermediate flange 9 to pass through this hole 10 a.
In the embodiment shown in fig. 1 and 3, the head 7 is formed as a disc-shaped head having a flat surface on the side facing the sheet 2 and a convex surface 16 facing away from the sheet 2 when it is attached to the coupling pin as shown in fig. 3. In this embodiment the coupling pin 3 also has a neck 8 extending between the disc-shaped head 10 and the intermediate flange 9, and in this embodiment the diameter of the flange is smaller than the diameter of the hole 10, while the diameter of the flange 9 is slightly larger than the diameter of the hole 10, so that the flange 9 can be passed through the hole 10 by elastic deformation of the sheet material. Thus, as shown in fig. 2, when handling the sheet 2 before attaching the sheet 2 to the building block 2, it is possible to attach the coupling pins 3 to the sheet 2 without the risk of losing the coupling pins 3.
In some embodiments, the apertures have a triangular shape. This allows the flange to pass through the hole by elastic deformation of the hole while reducing the risk of damage to the sheet.
In the same way as the connector pin 17 can be snapped into one of the coupling sockets 4 on the construction element, the coupling pin 3 shown in fig. 3 can then be snapped into any of the cylindrical coupling sockets 4 on the construction block, wherein the intermediate flange 9 fits into the recess 5 on one side of the coupling socket 4. In this way, the same coupling sockets 4 may be used for interconnecting building blocks 1 or for attaching coupling pins 3.
In this connection, this embodiment of the invention also comprises a second type of coupling socket 4a, which is in the shape of a splined through hole, wherein a second type of coupling pin 24 with a splined shaft end will be inserted into the splined through hole and held in place by friction, as shown in fig. 5.

Claims (13)

1. A toy construction set comprising a plurality of toy construction blocks forming a construction with a plurality of coupling sockets arranged in a spatial or planar pattern, and wherein the toy construction set further comprises a plurality of coupling pins and a flexible sheet with at least one hole, and wherein each coupling pin extends in a longitudinal direction between a first end shaped to releasably attach the pin to one of the coupling sockets and a second end extending away from the coupling socket when the pin is in an attached position in the socket, and wherein the second end of the pin comprises a head distally provided on a neck on the second end of the pin, and wherein the neck has a cross-section allowing it to freely pass through the hole, and wherein the size and shape of the hole and the size and shape of the head are adapted such that the head cannot pass through the hole without tearing the flexible sheet or providing plastic deformation of the flexible sheet, wherein the neck extends between the head and a flange surrounding the pin, and the flange is sized and shaped such that plastic deformation of the flexible sheet is required if the flange is passed through the aperture.
2. The toy construction kit of claim 1,
the head is shaped like a disk head or has a flat surface on the side facing the neck.
3. A toy construction set according to claim 1 or 2,
the holes are triangular.

the neck is circular in cross-section and has a diameter that is less than a corresponding diameter of a circle circumscribing the triangular aperture.

the flange is circular in cross-section and has a diameter greater than a corresponding diameter of a circle inscribing the triangular aperture.
6. A toy construction set according to any one of the preceding claims,
the head has a maximum cross-section in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction that is greater than a maximum cross-section of the hole in the flexible sheet.
7. The toy construction kit of claim 6,
the holes in the flexible sheet and the largest cross-section of the head in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction are both circular.
8. A toy construction set according to any one of the preceding claims,
the construction kit comprises one or more of said building blocks, each building block having a plurality of coupling sockets arranged equidistantly along at least one straight line.
9. A toy construction set according to any one of the preceding claims,
a construction kit comprises two or more of said building blocks, and at least one connector pin having a first end adapted to be attached to a coupling socket on one of said building blocks, and an opposite end adapted to be attached to a coupling socket on another of said building blocks.
10. A toy construction set according to any one of the preceding claims,
the flexible sheet is made of an elastically bendable material.
11. A toy construction set according to any one of the preceding claims,
each of the coupling sockets is formed by a substantially cylindrical through hole extending through the building block.
12. A computer readable model comprising computer readable instructions configured to cause an apparatus for performing an additive manufacturing process to manufacture a toy construction element as defined in one or more of claims 1 to 10 when processed by the apparatus.
13. A method of assembling at a toy construction set according to one or more of the preceding claims, wherein the coupling pin is attached to the flexible sheet by first passing the first end of the coupling pin through a hole in the flexible sheet, and then attaching the first end of the coupling pin to the coupling socket of one of the toy construction blocks.
