DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENT (S) OF INVENTION
Referring to the drawings, there is shown an electrical socket 10 for receiving an electrical plug of an electrical appliance. The electrical receptacle 10 in the illustrated embodiment forms part of an electrical adapter 11 having electrical prongs 36 to enable the adapter 11 to be plugged into another electrical receptacle, such as a wall-mounted electrical outlet.
The electrical receptacle 10 generally includes a first body portion 14 mounted within the housing 12 of the adapter, and a second body portion 16 also mounted within the housing 12 for rotational movement relative to the first body portion 14. The second body portion 16 includes apertures 18 for receiving the pins of an electrical plug.
In the illustrated embodiment, the housing 12 includes a rectangular prism formed by a first housing portion 20 and a second housing portion 21. The first and second housing portions 20 and 21 are secured together by fastening screws for forming the housing 12. Each of the housing portions 20 and 21 includes a rectangular end wall 22 and a transverse side wall 23 extending from around the periphery of the end wall 22. The side walls 23 of each of the housing portions 20 and 21 are secured together to define a cavity within the housing 12.
The first body portion 14 is fixed within the housing 12. The second body portion 16 is fixed within the housing 12 such that the second body portion 16 is rotatable relative to the first body portion 14. In the illustrated embodiment, the first body portion 14 includes a first cylindrical member 24 secured adjacent the inner surface of the end wall 22 of the first housing portion 20. The second body portion 16 includes a second cylindrical member 26. The end of the second cylindrical member 26 is received in a cylindrical opening 28 provided in the end of the first cylindrical member 24. In the embodiment shown, the first cylindrical member 24 is open at both ends to define the opening 28, and the second cylindrical member is closed at both ends. The second cylindrical member 26 is rotatable within the opening 28 such that the second cylindrical member 26 is rotatable relative to the first cylindrical member 24 about a longitudinal axis extending through the first and second cylindrical members 24 and 26.
The end wall 22 of the second housing part 21 is provided with a circular opening into which an end of the second cylindrical member 26 can be received. The aperture 18 of the second cylindrical member 26 is provided in the surface of a first end of the second cylindrical member 26 which is accessible through a circular aperture in the end wall 22 of the second housing part 21.
The first cylindrical member 24 is provided with a first electrical contact 30. The second cylindrical member 26 is provided with a corresponding second electrical contact 32. The second electrical contacts 32 are each connected to an electrical contact 34 disposed within the second cylindrical member 26. The electrical contacts 34 are arranged so that the prongs of an electrical plug inserted into the aperture 18 engage with corresponding electrical contacts 34 respectively
The second electrical contact 32 comprises a protrusion extending outwardly from a sidewall of the second cylindrical member 26. In the illustrated embodiment, the projections comprise lugs that form part of the electrical connector 34 (shown in FIG. 6). The protrusions are longitudinally offset along the sidewall of the second cylindrical member 26 relative to the longitudinal axis of the second cylindrical member 26. The second electrical contact 32 formed by the lug passes through a hole in the side wall of the second cylindrical member 26 into a recess 40 so that the lug protrudes slightly beyond the outer surface of the side wall of the second cylindrical member 26. In the embodiment shown, the second electrical contact 32 comprises contacts for active and neutral connections.
The first electrical contact 30 is disposed on the inner surface of the first cylindrical member 24. The first electrical contact 30 includes a conductor ring 42 extending around the inner surface of the first cylindrical member 24. The ring 42 is also longitudinally offset relative to the longitudinal axis of the first cylindrical member 24. The position of the rings 42 corresponds to the position of the second electrical contacts 32 such that when the second cylindrical member 26 is received into the end of the first cylindrical member 24, the lugs of the second electrical contacts 32 engage with respective ones of the rings 42. Thus, electrical contact is maintained as the second cylindrical member 26 rotates within the first cylindrical member 24.
The first electrical contact 30 is connected as required by the appliance using the electrical socket 10. In the embodiment shown, the electrical receptacle 10 forms part of the electrical adaptor 11, the prongs 36 are arranged to extend outwardly from the end wall 22 of the first housing part 20, and each active and neutral prong 36 is connected to a respective ring 42.
The first cylindrical member 24 also includes a first ground contact 31 and the second cylindrical member 26 includes a second ground contact 33. The first ground contact 31 is connected to a first ground pin 36 and the second ground contact 33 is connected to an electrical connector 34 which engages the ground pin of a connected electrical plug.
The second ground contact 33 includes a conductive plate 41 disposed on the second end surface of the second cylindrical member 26. As shown in fig. 6, the conductive plate 41 is connected to the ground electrical connector 34 through the second end surface of the second cylindrical member 26.
The first ground contact 31 includes a pair of contact pins 38. The contact pins 38 are arranged in a holder 37 connected to the ground pins 36. The bracket 37 includes a spring 39 for moving the contact pin 38 toward the conductive plate 41. The electrical connection between the contact pins 38 is thus made with the outer surface of the conductive plate 41. The use of two contact pins 38 provides additional security to ensure that the ground connection remains in place.
A ratchet mechanism is provided for limiting rotational movement of the second cylindrical member 26 relative to the first cylindrical member 24. The mechanism includes a plurality of indentations 43 around the periphery of the second end surface of the second cylindrical member 26 (as shown in fig. 5).
The electrical socket 10 includes an inner wall 44 mounted within the housing adjacent the second end surface of the second cylindrical member 26. The inner wall 44 in the illustrated embodiment is secured to the first housing portion 20 by screws 50. The inner wall 44 includes a resilient lug 46 adjacent an edge thereof. In the illustrated embodiment, the inner wall 44 includes resilient arms 48, and the lugs 46 are disposed at the distal ends of the arms 48. The inner wall 44 includes apertures 52 through which the contact pins 38 pass.
The lug 46 includes a rounded end for engaging the indent 43. The lugs 46 are resiliently movable toward and away from the second cylindrical member 26 such that when the second cylindrical member 26 is rotated, the lugs 46 pass up and over the edge of an indentation 43 into one of the adjacent indentations 43. Thus, the second cylindrical member 26 is rotatable relative to the first cylindrical member 24 but is held in its rotated position by the action of the lugs 46 therein engaging the indentations 43.
Fig. 9 to 11 show a second embodiment of the invention, in which two electrical sockets 10 are provided in one electrical adapter 11. This configuration of the electrical socket 10 is similar to the first embodiment and like reference numerals are used to indicate like parts. The electrical socket 10 is mounted parallel to each other between the first and second housing parts 20 and 21.
In the embodiment shown in fig. 9-11, one of the electrical receptacles 10 does not include prongs 36, as the electrical adapter 11 only requires one set of prongs 36. The ring 42 of one of the electrical receptacles 10 is connected to the prongs 36 of the other electrical receptacle 10 by connecting wires 54. Conductors 56 are provided to connect the grounds of two electrical receptacles 10 within the housing 12.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the relevant art that various modifications and improvements may be made to the embodiments described above, in addition to those already described, without departing from the basic inventive concept of the present invention.
