Description
Technical Field
The present invention relates to reclining seating apparatuses and chairs employing same, and more particularly to reclining seating apparatuses for use on theater chairs having a footrest/stool collapse, a seat and a back that may be positioned in a desired zero-gravity configuration.
Background
In the sports furniture industry, there are devices that move/move chairs between at least two positions: a stowed position wherein the footrest is retracted and the seat back is substantially upright; and a fully reclined position, in which the footrest is extended, the seat is tilted forward from rear, and the backrest is reclined (the so-called "zero gravity" position). This type of motion is now entering other environments, such as theaters or theaters. However, these commercial environments present new problems for such sports furniture. It would be advantageous to have a design that accommodates the challenges presented by these environments. Furthermore, existing seating units provide a zero gravity position of tilt, but are achieved by a seat back that is fixed relative to the seat itself. Some users may prefer a similar seating unit, but desire that the seating unit be tilted slightly rearwardly relative to the seat portion when moved to the zero-gravity extended position.
Disclosure of Invention
A seating arrangement for a seating unit having a footrest, a seat portion and a backrest. The device is adapted to move the seating unit from a stowed position in which the footrest is retracted/hidden/stowed beneath the seat portion, the seat portion is in a generally horizontal orientation, and the backrest is in a vertical position, to an extended position in which the footrest is extended, the seat portion is tilted forward from rear, and the backrest is in a tilted position. The device includes a pair of spaced apart first and second substrates coupled together in a spaced apart relationship. The seating unit has a pair of mechanisms operable to move the seating unit between a stowed position and an extended position, one mechanism connected to one base plate. Each mechanism is a mirror image of the other mechanism. Each mechanism has a seat plate pivotally connected to a respective base plate by a first linkage that moves the seat plate between a first position when the seat unit is in a stowed position and a second position when the seat unit is in an extended position. Each mechanism further includes a back-mounting link pivotally connected to the seat pan and to a second linkage that tilts the back-mounting link from a first upright position when the seating unit is in the stowed position to a second tilted position when the seating unit is in the extended position. In the reclined position, the back mounting link is slightly inclined relative to the seat pan to provide a different reclined position than a seating unit in which the back is fixed relative to the seat. A footrest linkage is pivotally connected to the seat plate, the footrest linkage moving the footrest from a retracted position when the seat unit is in the stowed position to an open position when the seat unit is in the extended position. A third linkage is connected to the footrest linkage that moves the footrest linkage between a retracted position and an open position. The bell crank is pivotally connected to the seat plate. The bell crank has a first section extending in a first direction from a pivotal connection with the seat plate and a second section extending in a second direction from a pivotal connection with the seat plate. The first section of the bell crank is pivotally connected to the link in the third linkage and the second section is pivotally connected to the link in the third linkage and to the link in the second linkage. The bell crank (directly or indirectly) controls the extended position of the footrest and the inclined position of the backrest.
Additional objects, advantages and novel features of the invention will be set forth in part in the description which follows, and in part will become apparent to those skilled in the art upon examination of the following, or may be learned by practice of the invention.

Detailed Description
Embodiments of the present invention generally relate to a seating arrangement for a seating unit having a footrest, a seat portion, and a backrest (and a seating unit incorporating the same). The device is adapted to move the seating unit from a stowed position in which the footrest is retracted beneath the seat portion, the seat portion is in a generally horizontal orientation, and the backrest is in a vertical position, to an extended position in which the footrest is extended, the seat portion is tilted forward from the rear, and the backrest is in a reclined position.
The seating unit 10 is shown in a stowed position in fig. 1 and 2 and in an extended zero-gravity position in fig. 3-5. As shown in fig. 2, the seating unit 10 has a pair of spaced apart side base plates 12, the side base plates 12 being connected to a front rail 14 and a rear rail 16. The side base plates 12, the front rail 14, and the rear rail 16 form a base of the seat apparatus 10. The front motor tube/front motor tube 18 is connected to and extends between the side base plates 12. The clevis 20 is connected to the front motor tube 18 along a portion of the front motor tube 18 and is generally centrally located. A clevis 20 is used to pivotally connect a motor/generator 22 to the front motor tube 18. The motor 22 has an extendable shaft 24, the shaft 24 being pivotally connected at its outer end to a clevis 26. The clevis 26 is in turn connected to a rear motor tube 28. The rear motor tubes 28 extend from one side of the seating unit 10 to the other and are connected at each outer end to a motor tube bracket 30. The front motor tube 18 and the rear motor tube 28 are shown as being made of square steel tubing, but other materials may be used. Further, although not shown, it should be understood that the motor 22 is connected to a power source such that the motor 22 can extend and retract the shaft 24 when a control device (e.g., a button or toggle switch) is operated.
Turning to fig. 4, only one side of the seating unit 10 is shown. Each side of the seating unit 10 is a mirror image of the other side and therefore only one side will be described below. The motor tube bracket 30 is fixedly connected to the rear pivot link 32. One end of the rear pivot link 32 is pivotally connected to the side base plate 12 at pivot point 34. The rear pivot link 32 extends from a pivot point 34 and is pivotally connected at its other end to a seat pan 36 at a pivot point 38. The rear end of the seat plate 36 is pivotally connected to the back-mount link 40 at pivot point 42. As understood by those skilled in the art, the back mounting link 40 is used to connect the seat back to the seating unit 10. The back mounting link 40 is pivotally connected to the back support link 44 at pivot point 46. The back support link 44 extends away from the pivot point 46 and is pivotally connected at an opposite end to a back bell crank 48 at a pivot point 50. Note that a portion of side substrate 12 is removed in fig. 4 to illustrate this connection. The back bell crank 48 is pivotally connected to the seat plate 36 at pivot point 52. The back bell crank 48 is somewhat L-shaped with one leg pivotally connected (at pivot point 50) to the back support link 44 and the other leg pivotally connected to the rear control link 54 at pivot point 56. The rear control link 54 is a short straight link that is pivotally connected at one end opposite pivot point 56 to a bell crank 58 at pivot point 60.
Bell crank 58 has a boomerang shape and is pivotally connected to seat panel 36 near the center of bell crank 58 at pivot point 62. One end of bell crank 58 is pivotally connected to a front pivot toggle lever 64 at pivot point 66. The end of the front pivot toggle 64 opposite the pivot point 66 is pivotally connected to a front pivot link 68 at pivot point 70. The end of bell crank 58 opposite pivot point 66 is pivotally connected to footrest drive link 72 at pivot point 74. The front pivot link 68 is pivotally connected at its lower end to the side base plate 12 at pivot point 76. The front pivot links 68 extend upwardly from the side base plates 12 and are pivotally connected at their upper ends to the seat plate 36 at pivot points 78. As shown in fig. 3, the cross tube 80 is fixedly connected to the front pivot links 68 near the midpoint of the front pivot links 68. The cross tube 80 extends from one side of the seat assembly 10 to the other and is connected at each end to a respective front pivot link 68. The cross tube 80 increases the stability of the seat assembly 10.
As best shown in fig. 5, the seat frame 118 is pivotally connected to the seat pivot link 120 at pivot point 122. The seat pivot link 120 is also pivotally connected to the seat plate 36 at pivot point 124. As shown in fig. 5, the seat pivot link 120 has a stop tab 126 extending from the periphery of the seat pivot link 120 near the pivot point 124. The stop pin 128 is fixed to the shoe plate 36 just below the pivot point 124. The seat pivot link 120 allows the seat frame 118 to pivot upward from the position shown in fig. 5 to the position shown in fig. 6. The stop pin 128 engages the stop tab 126 to prevent over-rotation of the seat frame 118. In addition, in the position where the seat frame 118 is rotated upward (fig. 6), the front edge of the seat engages the top of the footrest on the bench collapsing bracket 108 to prevent over-rotation of the seat frame 118.
As shown in fig. 1 and 4, the upper seat bracket 130 is connected to the seat plate 36. The upper seat support 130 extends astride above the gap in the seat plate 36, providing an additional surface for the seat frame 118 to rest on and ensuring that the seat frame 118 does not fall into the gap in the seat plate 36.
A number of additional latch pins are used to prevent the seat assembly 10 from moving beyond the desired position. As shown in fig. 1, a stop pin 132 is connected to the seat pan 36, and when the seat apparatus 10 is moved to the stowed position, the stop pin 132 engages a portion of the front bench collapsing link 96, which stops the rotation of the front bench collapsing link 96 at a desired position. Similarly, the stopper pin 134 is connected to the side substrate 12 as shown in fig. 2. The stop pin 134 engages the bottom of the front pivot link 68 and when the seat assembly 10 reaches the stowed position, the stop pin 134 prevents rotation of the front pivot link 68.
The seating unit 10 moves the seat portion from the stowed position (fig. 1) to the open zero-gravity position (fig. 4). The seat plate 36 is moved from the stowed position to the open position by engaging the motor 22 to retract the shaft 24. When the shaft 24 is retracted, the rear motor tube 28 acts through the motor tube bracket 30 to rotate the rear pivot link 32 counterclockwise (from the perspective of fig. 4) about the pivot point 34. This moves the seat deck 36 forward and downward under the control of the front pivot link 68 and the rear pivot link 32. When moved to the open position, the seat on the seat frame 118 is moved forward by the seat plate 36, and the backrest of the seat frame 118 is lowered so that the seat is more inclined from the rear to the front. As the seat pan 36 moves forward, the bench collapsing brackets 108 move from the retracted position to the open position shown in fig. 4 under the drive of the bell cranks 58 and the footrest drive links 72. The final open position of the bench collapsing brackets 108 is tilted at a reverse angle relative to the seat frame 118 to achieve a portion of the zero-gravity position. This final open position of the bench collapsing brackets 108 is achieved by rotation of the bell cranks 58, the bell cranks 58 being controlled by movement of the seat pan 36, the front pivot toggle links 64 (which are connected to the front pivot links 68), and the footrest drive links 72 (which are connected to the rear bench collapsing links 82). Bell crank 58 rotates counterclockwise about pivot point 62 when moving from the stowed position to the open position. This movement moves the rear control link 54 which in turn causes the back bell crank 48 to rotate clockwise about the pivot point 52. The rotational movement of back bell crank 48 pulls back support link 44 causing back mounting link 40 to tilt slightly, rotating about pivot point 42, as device 10 moves from the stowed position to the open position. In this zero-gravity open position, the back-mounting link 40 tilts the back (which is attached to the back-mounting link 40) slightly relative to the seat frame 118, thereby bringing a comfortable zero-gravity position for a person seated in a chair with the seating arrangement 10.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that this invention is one well adapted to attain all the ends and objects set forth above, together with other advantages, which are obvious and inherent to the structure. It will be appreciated that certain features and variations/subcombinations are of utility and may be employed without reference to other features and variations.
