Description

Fuel filter
Technical Field
The present invention relates to the field of fuel filters.
Background
In a fuel injection system, fuel from a fuel tank is delivered to a common rail and/or injectors through a fuel filter and a high pressure fuel injection pump. The function of the fuel filter is to prevent impurities present in the fuel from reaching the high-pressure fuel injection pump. When the vehicle is cranked, fuel present in the fuel tank flows via the fuel filter to reach the high-pressure fuel injection pump, and the electric supply pump present in the fuel tank pumps the fuel out of the fuel tank. During startup, when the electric supply pump is switched "ON", the fuel flow develops a peak pressure before the fuel filter for a short period of time before the fuel filter stabilizes. This increase in pressure may cause particulates collected on the fuel filter element to be pushed through the filter element, thereby causing filter performance to deteriorate. This problem is exacerbated during engine start-stop functions on vehicles for fuel savings because the number of engine starts is multiplied compared to vehicles without start-stop functions.
Prior art patent application EP0290787a1 discloses a damper element which is proposed for reducing pressure fluctuations in the fuel supply system of an internal combustion engine in a motor vehicle, is mounted on the inlet side of a filter housing and guides the arriving pulsating fuel flow through a sealed flow channel. The damper element has at least two relatively short flow channels which are connected in parallel and extend in a straight line and which connect the inlet chamber in the housing to a supply chamber between the filter housing and the end face of the filter insert and which considerably damp vibrations and noise caused by the fuel pump when fuel flows through them.
Drawings
Various versions of the invention are disclosed in detail in the specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings:
FIG. 1 illustrates a fuel filter in a fuel injection system.
Detailed Description
FIG. 1 illustrates a fuel filter 100 in a fuel injection system. The fuel filter 100 is located upstream of the fuel tank 102 and downstream of the fuel injection pump 104 and comprises at least an inlet path for receiving fuel, a filter chamber 108 comprising a filter element, and the fuel filter comprises an outlet path 109. The fuel filter 100 features a damping plate 110, the damping plate 110 being positioned along the inlet path and attached to at least a portion of the filter element. In one embodiment, the damping plate 110 is flexibly attached to the filter element. Alternatively, the damping plate 110 is rigidly attached to the filter element. The damping plate 110 may include perforations.
The construction of the fuel filter 100 will now be explained in further detail. The fuel filter 100 includes an inlet path adapted to receive fuel at one end from a fuel tank 102. The other end of the inlet path leads to a filter chamber 108. The filter chamber 108 includes a filter element for purifying the fuel. The filter includes an outlet path 109, through which outlet path 109 filtered fuel flows into the high pressure fuel injection pump 104. A damping plate 110 is positioned along the inlet path 106 and attached to at least a portion of the filter element. The damping plate 110 includes perforations through which fuel flows.
The operation of the fuel filter 100 will be explained in further detail. The fuel tank 102 may contain an electric charge pump, when switched "ON", fuel from the fuel tank 102 flows into the fuel filter 100 via the inlet path 106 into the filter chamber 108, where the fuel is filtered by means of the filter element. The damper plate 110, which is positioned along the inlet path 106, allows fuel to flow through the perforations in the plate 110. Due to the damping plate 110, the pressure associated with the fuel is reduced. This prevents particulates from being pushed through the filter and also reduces the pressure associated with the fuel during fuel flow.
In the context of the present disclosure, "adapted" or "arranged" refers to a technical property or technical capability of a component, with respect to which the term "adapted" or "arranged" is used to perform or execute a specified action or actions, when such is required. Furthermore, the use of the terms "adapted to" or "arranged" herein is with reference to the normal technical performance or capability of the component as conferred by the design or structure or composition of the component, and not with reference to any special or extraneous performance or capability beyond the scope of the normal technical performance or capability. Therefore, a solution to this problem is required.
It should be understood that the embodiments explained in the above description are merely illustrative, and do not limit the scope of the present invention in terms of the type of fuel filter used. Many such embodiments, as well as other modifications and variations of the embodiments explained in this specification, are contemplated. The scope of the invention is limited only by the scope of the claims.
