Description

Method for displaying BIOS information in early stage of computer system startup self-check
[ field of technology ]
The present invention relates to a method for displaying BIOS information during power-on self-test of a computer system, and more particularly, to a method for displaying BIOS information at an early stage after the system is started.
[ background Art ]
After the computer is powered On and started, the computer executes a BIOS program to detect each hardware of the computer, namely, power-On Self-Test (POST); and if a hardware error is detected in the process of power-on self-detection, the computer continues to perform power-on self-detection or stop operation according to the type of the hardware error. When certain specific hardware errors occur, the BIOS hang situation happens, so that the computer cannot be started continuously, and the computer stops operating at the moment; when the generated hardware error is not specific hardware error and the BIOS is not enabled to hang, the computer still continues to perform the power-on self-detection after displaying the debug code.
Generally, in the early stage of the power-on self-test, hardware related to the operation of the computer such as a Central Processing Unit (CPU), a memory, a motherboard and the like is first tested, and the display card is initialized and tested in the middle stage; therefore, in the early stage of the power-on self-detection, if the BIOS program detects a hardware error, the user cannot see the debug information related to the hardware error generated by the BIOS program from the screen connected to the display card, which also causes that the system developer cannot easily exclude the hardware error detected in the early stage of the power-on self-detection in the system development process.
In addition, if a hardware error is detected after the display card is initialized by the BIOS program, the debug information displayed on the screen by the BIOS program control display card is usually just debug code (debug code), and a detailed description about the hardware error is not provided.
[ invention ]
The invention aims to provide a method for displaying BIOS information in early stage of computer system startup self-check.
In order to solve the above technical problems, a method for displaying BIOS information in early stage of computer system boot self-test is provided, the computer system comprises a processing unit, a baseboard management controller, a BIOS program module and a display unit.
The method for displaying BIOS information at early stage of computer system start-up self-check includes a step (a), a step (b), a step (c) and a step (d).
The step (a) is that the baseboard management controller initializes the display unit.
The step (b) is that the processing unit generates a BIOS information by executing the BIOS program module.
The step (c) is that the processing unit transmits the BIOS information to the baseboard management controller.
The step (d) is that the baseboard management controller outputs the BIOS information to the display unit.
Compared with the prior art, the method for displaying BIOS information in early stage of the computer system startup self-checking of the invention is characterized in that the baseboard management controller initializes the display unit after the computer system startup, and if the processing unit detects a system error in the process of executing the BIOS program module to perform the startup self-checking, the BIOS information which clearly describes the cause and the position of the error is generated, and the BIOS information is transmitted to the baseboard management controller through the processing unit, and the baseboard management controller outputs the BIOS information to the display unit and then displays the BIOS information on a screen, so that the BIOS information which details the cause and the position of the system error is displayed on the screen in early stage of the startup self-checking, thereby really achieving the aim of the invention.

FIG. 1 is a block diagram illustrating a computer system for implementing a method for displaying BIOS information early in a computer system boot self-test according to the present invention.
FIG. 2 is a flowchart illustrating an embodiment of the method for displaying BIOS information during early boot self-test of a computer system.
FIG. 3 is a diagram illustrating BIOS information about memory errors displayed on a screen.
[ detailed description ] of the invention
Referring to fig. 1, the method for displaying BIOS information in early stage of computer system boot self-test according to the present invention is implemented by a computer system, the computer system includes a host computer 1 and a screen 2, the host computer 1 includes a processing unit 11, a baseboard management controller 12 (Baseboard Management Controller), a memory unit 14 electrically connected to the processing unit 11, and a display unit 13. In this embodiment, the display unit 13 is a display card and is electrically connected to the screen 2; the baseboard management controller 12 is electrically connected to the processing unit 11 and the display unit 13. The memory unit 14 is, for example, a read only memory, and stores a BIOS program module 141.
Referring to FIG. 2, an embodiment of the method for displaying BIOS information at an early stage of a computer system power-on self-test is described in detail below.
After the host computer 1 is started, the baseboard management controller 12 initializes the display unit 13 (step 31), and simultaneously, the processing unit 11 performs a power-on self-test by executing the BIOS program module 141 to detect whether there is a system error such as a hardware error (step 32). It should be noted that, in the present embodiment, by modifying a baseboard management control firmware running on the baseboard management controller 12, the baseboard management controller 12 can initialize the display unit 13 by modifying the baseboard management control firmware to include a program code related to initializing the display unit 13, wherein the program code of the baseboard management control firmware is similar to the program code used for initializing the display unit 13 in the BIOS program module 141.
When the processing unit 11 detects a system error, the processing unit 11 generates a BIOS message corresponding to the system error, wherein the BIOS message describes the cause and location of the system error (step 33).
Then, the processing unit 11 transmits the BIOS information to the baseboard management controller 12 through an intelligent platform management interface (Intelligent Platform Management Interface) (step 34), and then proceeds to perform power-on self-test (step 35).
In this embodiment, the example that the hardware error does not cause the BIOS to be hang is described, when the hardware error does not cause the BIOS to be hang, the processing unit 11 continues to perform the power-on self-test after transmitting the BIOS information to the baseboard management controller 12, however, in other embodiments, when the hardware error causes the BIOS to be hang, the processing unit 11 stops operating after transmitting the BIOS information to the baseboard management controller 12.
After receiving the BIOS information, the baseboard management controller 12 outputs the BIOS information to the display unit 13, so that the display unit 13 controls the screen 2 to display the BIOS information (step 36).
It should be noted that, in order to display the BIOS information in the early stage of the computer system power-on self-test, in step 31, the present invention firstly initializes the display unit 13 by the baseboard management controller 12, so that the baseboard management controller 12 can make the display unit 13 control the screen 2 to display the BIOS information after receiving the BIOS information, and at this time, the display unit 13 is controlled by the baseboard management controller 12 (i.e. the master control right of the display unit 13 is in the baseboard management controller 12). Then, as the processing unit 11 continues to execute the mid-stage of the power-on self-test, the processing unit 11 re-initializes the display unit 13 by executing the BIOS program module 141, at which time the display unit 13 is controlled by the processing unit 11 (i.e. the main control of the display unit 13 is returned to the processing unit 11).
In particular, the method of the present invention not only can display the BIOS information at the early stage of the power-on self-test of the computer system, but also the BIOS information describes the reason and the position (i.e. the hardware position) of the system error, not just the debug code, and can be read without translating or comparing and analyzing the comparison table. For example, when the computer is a multiprocessor computer and an abnormality is detected in an early stage of the power-on self-test, the system error occurrence position may indicate a hardware position such as a CPU channel; when the early stage of the power-on self-detection detects that an abnormality occurs in one memory of the computer, the system error occurrence position can indicate the hardware position of the DIMM slot; when an abnormality is detected in one of the peripheral device interconnection devices associated with the computer at an early stage of the power-on self-test, the system error occurrence position may indicate, for example, a hardware position of the peripheral device interconnection device.
For example, referring to fig. 3, after the host computer 1 is started, the processing unit 11 performs a power-on self-test by the BIOS program module 141, and detects that a hardware error occurs in the memory slot "DIMM slot 1" in an early stage of the power-on self-test, so as to generate BIOS information with the content of "Memory test error:dimm slot 1 failed" and transmit the BIOS information to the baseboard management controller 12. The baseboard management controller 12 immediately outputs the BIOS information to the display unit 13 after receiving the BIOS information, so that the display unit 13 controls the screen 2 to display Memory test error, DIMM slot 1 failed. Thus, the system developer can see that a memory error is currently occurring on the screen 2, and that an error has occurred in the memory slot "DIMM slot 1". The screen 2 can display the detailed information of the cause of the hardware error in the early stage of the power-on self-test, which is helpful for debugging in the system development process.
In another embodiment, the BIOS information generated by the processing unit 11 is not limited to information describing the cause of the system error. For example, in addition to generating the BIOS information corresponding to the system error, the processing unit 11 may generate, for each hardware item that is detected and has no error during the power-on self-test by executing the BIOS program, a status information describing the name and the current status of the hardware item, and display the status information on the screen 2 through the baseboard management controller 12 and the display unit 13; thus, in the early stage of the power-on self-test, the name and the status of each hardware item to be tested can be displayed on the screen 2.
In summary, in the method for displaying BIOS information in early stage of the computer system boot self test of the present invention, by initializing the display unit 13 by the baseboard management controller 12 after the computer system boot, and if the processing unit 11 detects a system error in the process of executing the BIOS program module 141 to perform the boot self test, the BIOS information clearly describing the cause and the position of the error is generated, and the BIOS information is transmitted to the baseboard management controller 12 by the processing unit, and the baseboard management controller 12 outputs the BIOS information to the display unit 13 and then displays the BIOS information on the screen 2, so that the BIOS information detailing the cause and the position of the system error can be displayed on the screen 2 in early stage of the boot self test, and the purpose of the present invention can be achieved.
The foregoing is merely illustrative of the present invention, and the present invention is not limited thereto, and any person skilled in the art will readily recognize that variations or substitutions are within the scope of the present invention. Therefore, the protection scope of the invention is subject to the protection scope of the claims.
