对于某些应用来说,有源光纤中的光子暗化是一个问题。如共同待决的专利权合作条约申请PCT/DK2009/050314中所描述的,可通过减少传导的光信号与有源区域的重叠来减弱光子暗化随时间发生的程度。可通过多种方式来减少模态(modal)的重叠。在一个实施例中,在距所述纤芯区域中心的第二半径距离r2上的有源成分的浓度高于距所述纤芯区域中心的第一半径距离r1上的有源成分的浓度,其中r1<r2。在一个实施例中,在所述纤芯区域的中心,所述有源成分的浓度具有局部最小值。在所述纤芯区域的中心,所述有源成分的浓度可大体上为零。附图3中示出这种光纤设计的例子。
在一个实施例中,环形区域包括布置在包围所述纤芯区域中心的环中的多个有源部件。
通过在所述纤芯区域的横截面的有限部分中布置有源纤芯部件,也可减少纤芯区域中传导的光信号与有源区域的模态重叠。该有源区域可包括至少一个有源纤芯部件。在一个实施例中,光纤包括大致沿第一芯线布置的至少一个有源纤芯部件。该第一芯线可平行于所述第一线。

当作为有源光纤使用时,所述有源光纤施加有相对较高的泵浦能量以反转有源材料的数量,(例如由反转的空间非均匀分布造成的)热效应可能导致单模光纤至少部分地支持高阶模式。当能量被最有效地转换为纤芯中心上的纤芯基模时反转的空间非均匀分布可能发生,其中在纤芯中心上基模具有其最大强度。
有源区域可被设置为使得纤芯高阶模与有源成分的模态重叠减少。在一个实施例中,高阶模与有源成分的模场重叠低于约50%,例如低于约25%,例如低于约20%,例如低于约15%,例如低于约10%,例如低于约5%,例如低于约1%。在一个实施例中,传导的光信号可包括以多种模式传播的光,且传导的光信号与有源成分的模态重叠低于约25%,例如低于约20%,例如低于约15%,例如低于约10%,例如低于约5%,例如低于约1%。附图4中示出了一种光纤设计,其中纤芯基模具有其最大强度,有源成分被布置为使得用于所述纤芯基模的增益有益地更大。
有源成分在其发射光谱上具有至少一个波长区域,其中当有源成分被泵浦信号泵浦时,观察相对较强的发射。
光纤可适于抑制高阶模式(HOM)和/或传导在较窄光谱波长区域上的光。在一个实施例中,多个第三类型的内包层部件形成一个或多个在横截面上延伸的光学谐振结构,提供纤芯模式与一个或多个光沉的谐振耦合。
在包括一段有源材料的纤芯区域中,纤芯区域有源部分的面积和纤芯区域的总面积之间的比值在约0.1至约0.9之间的范围内,例如在约0.2至约0.8之间、约0.3至约0.7之间、约0.4至约0.6之间的范围内。

对于根据本发明的光纤,最重要的光波长是在紫外至红外区间上(例如,从约150nm至11μm的波长)。在该波长区域上,用于光纤制造的最相关的材料(例如硅)的折射率可以被认为是大体上与波长无关的,或至少并非较强地依赖于波长。然而,对于非均匀材料,例如包括诸如空隙或气孔的微结构元件的光纤,有效折射率较强地依赖于材料的形态。此外,这种光纤的有效折射率会较强地依赖于波长。确定给定的具有空隙或气孔的光纤结构在给定波长上的有效折射率的工艺对本领域的技术人员来说是公知的(参见例如Broeng等,Optical Fibre Technology,第5卷第305-330页,1999)。
在一个实施例中,通过下掺杂所述内包层背景材料来提供高折射率环和内包层背景材料之间的折射率差。高折射率环可包括上掺杂(up-doped)的硅材料或基本上纯的硅。
可以以有序的布置方式(例如晶格)或具有少数次序或周期的布置方式放置内包层部件。在一个实施例中,内包层部件的布置大体上围绕所述纤芯区域。在一个实施例中,内包层部件的布置包括仅部分地围绕所述纤芯区域的局部部分。内包层部件可布置在一个或多个分离的部分中,每一部分被限制在所述横截面中相应的角度范围内。
在一个实施例中,气孔的半径和高折射率材料区域的厚度之间的比值小于约0.9,例如小于约0.8,例如小于约0.7,例如小于约0.6,例如小于约0.5,例如小于约0.4,例如小于约0.3,例如小于约0.2。
内包层部件可进一步包括布置为谐振结构的第三类型部件,将第一波长区间上的光从所述纤芯区域谐振耦合至所述外包层区域。内包层部件可进一步包括布置成第二谐振结构的第四类型部件,将第二波长区间上的光从所述纤芯区域谐振耦合至所述外包层区域。第一和第二波长区间对光纤的弯曲是敏感的。
所述第一类型部件的高折射率环允许这些部件以支持一种或多种光学模式。
在一个实施例中,通过改变所述第一类型部件作用的气孔的直径来调整由所述第一类型部件支持的模式的有效折射率。
在一个实施例中,第二类型部件由被内包层背景材料区域围绕的气孔组成。
在一个实施例中,第一和第二类型的部件皆包括高折射率环。至少能通过部件的高折射率环的厚度来区分这两种部件。第二类型部件的厚度和第一类型部件的厚度之间的比值可小于约0.9,例如小于约0.8,例如小于约0.7,例如小于约0.6,例如小于约0.5,例如小于约0.4,例如小于约0.3,例如小于约0.2,例如小于约0.1,例如小于约0.05,例如小于约0.02。
内包层部件的布置使得根据本发明的光纤是双折射的。通过向光纤增加应力施加成分,可以增强或减弱双折射,或引入双折射。在一个实施例中,光纤进一步包括应力施加成分,布置为向所述纤芯区域和/或所述内包层部件施加应力。这些所述应力施加成分可包括掺杂硼(B)和/或氟(F)的硅。应力施加成分也可被称为应力施加内包层部件。
如果纤芯是无源的,即仅包含不足量的有源材料(例如没有包含有源材料),光纤仍可进行光信号的放大。在一个实施例中,泵浦信号的波长相对于光信号的波长向下漂移,这种波长漂移相应于硅玻璃的拉曼漂移,根据本发明的光学系统能够向在纤芯区域中传播的光信号提供拉曼增益。在一个实施例中,信号波长为1064nm,泵浦波长约为1010nm。
在一个实施例中,多个第一类型的内包层部件抑制了在小于波长间隔的波长阻带中的纤芯基模,其中纤芯区域是单模的。因而在纤芯区域为信号波长上的单模的同时,光纤可滤除来自纤芯区域的短波长的放大的自发辐射。在一个实施例中,纤芯区域是1064nm的信号波长上的单模,而在1030nm波长左右的间隔处的波长上抑制纤芯模式。
在一个实施例中,泵浦光源包括激光器,其能够发射所述有源成分的吸收光谱的波长上的光。
在一个实施例中,种子光源包括种子光激光源。
可使用光学元件将泵浦光耦合入所述光纤的包层区域,其中光学元件选自如下的组:光纤锥、泵浦反射镜、透镜系统或熔接至泵浦传送光纤的熔接点。
泵浦光源可包括激光器,其能够发射所述有源成分的吸收光谱的波长上的光。

在放大器配置中,自光源12发射的光信号通过隔离器13,之后被耦合入光纤1。使用透镜17、14和泵浦反射器15将泵浦信号16耦合入内包层。光信号在光纤内被放大,且如箭头18所示在光源对面的端口从系统输出。
在激光系统21中,放射器元件20形成激光腔的一部分,且布置在该反射器元件对面的端面可构成腔的另一反射器。
附图9示出对于0.1-0.24的归一化的气孔直径,测量的无源蜂巢结构(附图2)的单模区域。示出了两个单模带,相应于将高阶模式耦合出纤芯的多个第一类型部件的两个不同的包层模式。水平线将1030nm标记为信号波长的示例,而垂直线指示了气孔直径间隔,其中光纤为信号波长上的单模。
附图10示出在1064nm波长上,蜂巢结构(例如如附图2所示)的基模(点线)和第一高阶模(虚线,向下的斜线)的模拟的模式折射率。光纤结构的间隔∧为14.5μm,环的折射率高于硅,为2.5·10-3。若气孔直径较大,则光纤为多模的,但随着气孔直径d的减小,在0.17至0.19的d/∧上(陡峭的虚线),归一化的环的厚度增大并增加了包层模式的有效折射率并将高阶模式耦合出纤芯。d/∧<0.17时,并不传导纤芯基模。图中还示出了作为气孔直径函数的归一化的环的厚度(假定高折射率材料的质量守恒)。
附图11和12示出无源蜂巢式或kagome结构的传输光谱31,其具有来自基模和高阶纤芯模式之间差拍的重叠的差拍频谱(beat spectrum)。在1050nm-1070nm左右未观察到振荡,这表示在该波长带32上光纤是单模的。并不传导或仅微弱地传导在970nm-1050nm波长上的纤芯模式,这表示该波长带35上,包层模式与纤芯基模交叉且将其耦合出纤芯。该阻带可抑制短波长的放大的自发辐射。附图12中,在大于1070nm的波长上观察到振荡,这表示多模行为的开始。并不传导或仅微弱地传导小于1050nm波长的纤芯模式,这表示包层模式与纤芯基模交叉且将其耦合出纤芯。
Claims (63)
1.一种单模光纤,用于传导光信号,所述光纤具有纵向的光轴以及垂直于该光轴的横截面,所述光纤包括:
纤芯区域,其能够以有效折射率为nc的纤芯基模传导光信号波长为λ1的光信号;
包层区域,其包围纤芯区域,该包层区域包括内包层区域和外包层区域,所述内包层区域包括折射率为nb的背景材料以及布置在所述背景材料中的多个内包层部件,其中至少有多个所述多个内包层部件为第一类型的部件,所述第一类型的部件包括由高折射率区域包围的气孔,其中高折射率区域包括折射率nr的高折射率材料,折射率nr大于内包层背景材料的折射率,所述第一类型的部件支持有效折射率为n1的光学模式,其中n1小于或等于在所述光信号波长λ1上的纤芯基模的有效折射率nc。
2.根据权利要求1所述的光纤,所述光纤能够被包层泵浦或是纤芯泵浦且适于放大光信号,纤芯区域包括掺杂有至少一种有源成分的材料;以及内包层区域能够传导泵浦波长为λp的泵浦信号。
3.根据权利要求1或2所述的光纤,其中纤芯区域具有纤芯有效折射率,该纤芯有效折射率大体上等于内包层背景材料的折射率。

44.一种用于制造根据权利要求1至42的光纤的方法,所述方法包括:
Ⅰ.提供至少一个纤芯预制元件和多个内包层预制元件;
Ⅱ.以预制件的形式设置所述纤芯预制元件和所述内包层预制元件,使得所述内包层预制元件包围所述纤芯预制元件,以及可选地布置多个外包层预制元件和/或外包层预制筒以包围该纤芯预制元件和该内包层预制元件;
Ⅲ.将所述预制件拉丝为光纤;
其中所述内包层预制元件包括多个第一类型的预制元件,其包括由高折射率区域包围的气孔。

54.根据权利要求43-52中任一项所述的方法,其中将所述预制件拉丝为光纤包括将所述预制件拉丝为细茎,随后将该细茎拉丝为所述光纤。

Ⅱ.泵浦光源,其能够提供泵浦波长为λp的泵浦光,所述泵浦光源光学地耦合至所述包层泵浦光纤;以及
Ⅲ.种子光源,被布置为向所述包层泵浦光纤的纤芯中发射光信号。
58.根据权利要求56所述的系统,其中所述泵浦光源包括激光器,其能够发射所述有源成分的吸收光谱的波长上的光。
59.根据权利要求56或57所述的系统,其中所述种子光源包括种子光激光源。
60.根据权利要求56-58中任一项所述的系统,其中使用光学元件将所述泵浦光耦合入所述光纤的包层区域,其中光学元件选自如下的组:光纤锥、泵浦反射镜、透镜系统或熔接至泵浦传送光纤的熔接点。
61.一种光学激光系统,用于发射光信号波长为λ1的光信号,所述系统包括:
Ⅰ.根据权利要求2-43中任一项所述的包层泵浦光纤;以及
Ⅱ.泵浦光源,其能够提供泵浦波长为λp的泵浦光的泵浦光源,所述泵浦光源光学地耦合至所述包层泵浦光纤。
62.根据权利要求60所述的系统,其中所述泵浦光源包括激光器,其能够发射在所述有源成分的吸收光谱的波长上的光。
63.根据权利要求61所述的系统,进一步包括用于Q开关过程的元件。
