Abstract

本发明提供等离子体显示面板的驱动方法,能够减少产生地址放电的错误而不使寻址所需要的时间增加。在等离子体显示面板中,构成画面的各个单元具有用扫描电极和数据电极控制的地址放电部、用扫描电极和辅助电极控制而且比地址放电部容易产生放电的触发放电部,在用该等离子体显示面板进行显示时,在进行寻址期间中,在扫描电极上顺序施加扫描脉冲,与此同时,根据显示数据把地址脉冲有选择地施加在数据电极上,并且控制辅助电极的电位,以便响应向扫描电极施加的扫描脉冲,在选择行的单元中的触发放电部产生放电,而与是否向数据电极施加地址脉冲无关。

Description

等离子体显示面板的驱动方法
技术领域
本发明涉及等离子体显示面板(Plasma Display Panel:PDP)的驱动方法。
背景技术
在彩色影像显示中目前使用3电极表面放电型的AC等离子体显示面板。这里所说的3电极表面放电型是把用于在前面基板或背面基板上产生显示放电的第一电极和第二电极平行排列,把第三电极与第一电极和第二电极交叉排列在背面基板或前面基板上的形式。
显示时,仅在矩阵式排列的单元中要点亮的单元上,进行形成适当量壁电荷的线顺序扫描形式的数据写入动作(寻址),此后进行点亮维持动作(持续),其利用壁电荷来产生对应于显示数据的灰度等级值的次数的显示放电。在寻址中第二电极作为行选择的扫描电极使用,第三电极作为列选择的数据电极使用。在维持动作中,第一电极和第二电极构成用于产生显示放电的电极对。
此外,在寻址前一般要进行称为复位的初始化动作。进行复位的目的是全部单元的电荷积蓄状态均匀化,解除基于以前寻址而对壁电荷量设定的二进制值,以及生成容易引起下一次寻址中的地址放电的触发(priming)粒子。
关于生成触发粒子的文献有日本专利2581465号公报。在此文献中,提出的面板构造具有触发电极,它是用于容易产生触发放电的第四电极。例如触发电极配置成与扫描电极平行而且靠近。这样,形成通过在单元上施加低的电压而引起放电的触发放电部。在所述公报中记载有在寻址之前用触发电极,在全部单元中产生触发放电的驱动方法。

发明内容
用放电产生的触发粒子随时间的经过而减少。因此在寻址开始之前生成触发粒子的现有的驱动方法中,存在有随寻址的进行,地址放电错误的发生变多的问题。特别是在每个单元划分放电气体空间的面板构造中,由于在各单元中几乎没有从其他单元流入触发粒子,所以容易产生地址放电错误。此外,在单元尺寸小的高精细画面中,由于电荷中和的粒子之间的冲撞的概率大,所以触发粒子消失快。再加上行数多寻址所需要的时间长,所以频繁产生地址放电错误。
地址放电错误因施加的脉冲的脉冲宽度加大,放电概率提高而减少。可是这样的话,分配给寻址的时间变长,可以分配给维持的时间变短。为了缩短寻址所需要的时间,要把画面进行划分,并同时进行多个局部画面的寻址,就要增加部件个数,需要高价的驱动电路。
本发明的目的是不使寻址所需要的时间增加,减少产生地址放电的错误。
在线顺序形式的寻址中,利用施加在扫描电极上的扫描脉冲,产生触发放电,触发放电成为在扫描电极和数据电极之间生成的地址放电的触发器。由于每次施加扫描脉冲都生成触发粒子,所以不管扫描电极的数量多少,即使对于靠近寻址终了时选择的行,与此前选择的行一样,可以产生地址放电。
使用达到所述目的的驱动方法的等离子体显示面板包括:用于行选择的多个扫描电极、用于列选择的多个数据电极、以及用于产生触发放电的多个辅助电极。此外,构成该等离子体显示面板的画面的单元还分别具有用所述扫描电极和所述数据电极控制的地址放电部、以及用所述扫描电极和所述补助电极控制并比所述地址放电部容易产生放电的触发放电部。
达到所述目的的驱动方法在进行寻址期间中,在所述多个扫描电极上顺序施加扫描脉冲,与此同时,在所述多个数据电极上,对应于显示数据有选择地在地址放电部施加用于引起放电的地址脉冲,并且控制所述多个辅助电极的电位,以便响应向所述扫描电极施加的所述扫描脉冲,在选择行的单元中的用所述触发放电部产生放电,而与是否向所述数据电极施加地址脉冲无关。
发明的效果
按照本发明,可以减少产生地址放电的错误,而不使寻址所需要的时间增加。

具体实施方式
在本发明的实施中适合使用图1~图3所示的表面放电AC型等离子体显示面板。
如图1所示,等离子体显示面板1由前面板10、后面板20和图中没有表示的放电气体构成。前面板10和后面板20在图中是分开的,而实际上是相接触的。
前面板10包括:玻璃基板11、第一显示电极X、第二显示电极Y、辅助电极P、电介质层17、以及保护膜18。背面板20包括:玻璃基板21、地址电极A、电介质层23、隔离壁29、红(R)的荧光体24、绿(G)的荧光体25、以及蓝(B)的荧光体26。
显示电极X和显示电极Y构成用于产生表面放电方式的显示放电的电极对。显示电极Y在寻址时作为扫描电极使用。辅助电极P是用于产生触发放电的电极。显示电极X、显示电极Y和辅助电极P沿矩阵显示的行方向延伸,用电介质层17覆盖。另一方面,地址电极A沿列方向延伸,在寻址时作为数据电极使用。
隔离壁29是划定列之间边界的多个垂直壁291和划定行之间边界的多个水平壁292形成一体的平面看为格子状的构造体。用此隔离壁29在纵横方向划分放电气体空间,防止作为发光元件的单元之间的放电干扰。
在图2中表示了沿地址电极A并排的2个单元50的截面构造。各单元50具有用显示电极X和显示电极Y控制的显示放电部G1、用作为扫描电极的显示电极Y和地址电极A(数据电极)控制的地址放电部G2、以及用作为扫描电极的显示电极Y和辅助电极P控制的触发放电部G3。
在本实施例中,与显示电极X和显示电极Y的电极间隙(显示放电的表面放电间隙)相比,显示电极Y和辅助电极P的电极间隙小。也就是,与显示放电部G1相比,触发放电部G3容易产生放电。其中,所谓容易产生放电,是指从施加产生放电的电压到开始放电,比较容易缩短放电延迟。通常放电间隙越短,可用越低的电压产生放电,所以例如把在放电间隙长的电极之间产生放电的电压施加在放电间隙短的电极之间,这样产生的放电的放电延迟比在放电间隙长的电极之间的放电延迟短。
此外,与显示电极Y和地址电极A的距离相比,显示电极Y和辅助电极P的电极间隙小,触发放电部G3即使与地址放电部G2相比,也容易产生放电。
图3是表示等离子体显示面板的电极构成的俯视图。
在等离子体显示面板1中,各显示电极X和显示电极Y配置成在矩阵显示的各行中为一对,而且其列方向的位置关系为在每行交替成X-Y、Y-X、X-Y、Y-X…。然后在没有夹住显示电极X的相邻的显示电极Y和显示电极Y之间,配置排列辅助电极P,使其与水平壁292重叠。各辅助电极P对应于相邻的2行。
显示电极X是形成规定面积的放电面的透明导电膜41和提高导电性的金属膜42的层叠体。同样,显示电极Y由透明导电膜43和金属膜44构成,辅助电极P由透明导电膜45和金属膜46构成。辅助电极P的透明导电膜45的宽度比水平壁292的宽度宽,透明导电膜45向水平壁292的两侧伸出。辅助电极P的金属膜46配置在透明导电膜45的宽度方向中央,它的宽度比水平壁292窄,所以辅助电极P不挡住显示光。
此外,用于与显示电极X和辅助电极P的驱动电路连接的端子配置在画面的一侧(图中表示的右侧),显示电极Y的端子配置在另一侧(图中表示的左侧)。通过把端子在左右分开,容易与驱动电路连接。
图4是表示辅助电极的变形例子的俯视图。
图4的等离子体显示面板1b中的辅助电极Pb由配置成在每列独立的多个透明导电膜47、与这些透明导电膜47重叠的金属膜46构成。在此电极的构成中,由于除了辅助电极Pb和显示电极Y的电极间隙外,还可以选定透明导电膜47的行方向的尺寸或位置、以及形状,所以容易使触发放电部G3(参照图2)的放电规模和强度最佳化。
下面对等离子体显示面板1、1b的驱动方法进行说明。
在用等离子体显示面板1、1b进行的显示中,使用众所周知的子帧法。也就是,为了用二进制值的发光元件的单元50再现灰度等级,把作为输入图像的帧分割成规定数量的子帧。然后使根据要显示画面内一个个单元50的灰度等级值而选择的子帧中发光。为了使仅在要发光的单元50上产生显示放电,对每个子帧进行寻址。
等离子体显示面板1、1b的驱动方法的特征是,在寻址中与行选择同步,引起触发放电,更详细地说,通过为了行选择施加的扫描脉冲,在选择行的单元的触发放电部G3中引起触发放电。触发放电把起到快而可靠地引起地址放电的作用的触发粒子,提供给地址放电部G2。
在这样提高寻址的可靠性的基础上,在寻址之前的复位中,希望使单元之间的带电状态的波动减小。其中使用通过施加钝波电压,产生调整壁电荷量的微小放电,使放电开始特性一致的方法。
图5是表示子帧的驱动顺序的一个例子的驱动电压波形图。在图中设想等离子体显示面板1的驱动,而等离子体显示面板1b也可以使用同样的波形。在图中,综合描述了地址电极A、显示电极X和辅助电极P中的波形,关于显示电极Y,描述了最开始行的显示电极Y(1)和最终行的显示电极Y(n)的波形。图中的波形是一个例子,振幅、极性、时间可以进行各种变更。脉冲基线电位不限于接地电位。
在各子帧中分配复位期间、地址期间和持续期间。在复位期间进行使画面内的全部单元的壁电压相等的初始化,在地址期间对应于显示数据进行控制各单元的壁电压的寻址。然后在持续期间仅在要发光的单元中进行产生显示放电的持续。通过反复进行初始化、寻址和持续,显示1帧。
在复位期间中,对显示电极Y顺序施加正的钝波脉冲Pr1和负的钝波脉冲Pr2。也就是,进行使显示电极Y的电位单调上升的偏置控制和单调降低的偏置控制。此时,为了使电极间电压的上升快,把补偿偏置(offset bias)赋予显示电极X。图中的偏置电位为-Vs/2或+Vs/2。施加正的钝波Pr2时,为了快速到达规定电位,也把补偿偏置赋予显示电极Y。地址电极A的电位在整个复位期间保持接地电位(0伏)。而对于辅助电极P,进行与显示电极X同样的电位控制。也就是,控制辅助电极P的电位,使显示电极Y和显示电极X之间(把它称为YX电极之间)的电压极性和显示电极Y和辅助电极P之间(把它称为YP电极之间)的电压的极性,在复位期间总是相同的。
在复位期间中的施加最终钝波终了时,YX电极之间的电压与此电极之间的放电开始电压几乎相等。也就是,全部单元50的显示放电部G1一旦再加上比施加最终的钝波时的电压高的电压,就成为要产生放电那样的形成壁电荷的状态。同样,YP电极之间的电压与此电极之间的放电开始电压几乎相等,全部单元50的触发放电部G3一旦再加上比施加最终的钝波时的电压高的电压,就成为要产生放电那样的形成壁电荷的状态。
在地址期间中,显示电极X从复位期间延续,偏置为正电位。一旦使显示电极Y为接地电位,此后一根根顺序施加扫描脉冲Py。也就是进行行选择。扫描脉冲Py的极性为与复位期间中最终的钝波脉冲Pr2相同的极性。此外,扫描脉冲Py的振幅与钝波脉冲Pr2的振幅几乎相等。也就是,通过施加扫描脉冲Py,全部单元50的显示放电部G1成为容易引起放电的状态。此外,稍稍加大扫描脉冲Py的振幅,也可以在显示放电部G1中引起弱的触发放电。
在地址期间中,与行选择同步,把地址脉冲施加在对应于选择行中要发光的单元的地址电极A上。这样,一旦在选择的单元50的地址放电部G2中引起地址放电,由此诱发在显示放电部G1中也引起放电。换句话说,地址放电扩展到地址放电部G2和显示电极Y的放电。
为了使这样的地址放电快而可靠地开始,在地址期间中,辅助电极P被偏置,响应扫描脉冲Py,在触发放电部G3产生触发放电。更详细地说,偏置成比在复位期间中施加钝波脉冲Pr2时高出ΔVp。
触发放电与是否施加地址脉冲无关,在选择行的全部单元上引起。但是,在施加地址脉冲的单元上,引起比较强的触发放电。用触发放电在地址放电部G2中的地址放电的放电延迟变短,所以即使缩短扫描脉冲的宽度,也难以产生地址放电错误。此外,在每个行选择引起触发放电的本驱动方法中,与在地址期间开始前引起触发放电的驱动方法不同,不管扫描电极数量多少,都可以防止地址放电错误。
在持续期间中,交替把负极性的持续脉冲和正极性的持续脉冲施加在全部的显示电极X上,交替把正极性的持续脉冲和负极性的持续脉冲施加在全部的显示电极Y上。持续脉冲的振幅为持续电压(Vs)的1/2。通过把极性不同的持续脉冲同时施加在显示电极X和显示电极Y上,在YX电极之间例如一起加上绝对值Vs为180伏的持续电压。此持续电压在要发光的单元中引起持续放电。持续电压的施加次数为对应于该子帧的亮度权重的数量。
在持续期间中,为了降低YP电极之间的无功功率的消耗,辅助电极P的电位控制成与显示电极Y相同。例如与显示电极Y同样施加持续脉冲。辅助电极p由于用2根显示电极Y夹持,所以使向辅助电极P的通电路即使成为高阻抗状态,辅助电极P的电位也与显示电极Y的电位几乎相等。
以上的驱动方法也可以适用于图6~图9所示构造的等离子体显示面板中。
在图6和图7所示的等离子体显示面板2中,显示电极Xb和显示电极Yb排列成1根电极为相邻的2行的显示所共用。辅助电极Pc配置在与显示电极Yb重叠的位置上。
显示电极Xb由在单元52上具有T字形的放电面图案的透明导电膜41b和直线带状的金属膜42构成。同样,显示电极Y由透明导电膜43b和金属膜44构成。
如图7所示,辅助电极Pc埋入粘在前面基板11上的电介质层17b中,位于显示电极Yb的金属膜44和水平壁292之间。各单元52具有显示放电部G1、地址放电部G2、以及触发放电部G3。
图8表示的等离子体显示面板3具有与上述等离子体显示面板2相同排列的显示电极Xb和显示电极Yb。在等离子体显示面板3中,辅助电极Pd埋入靠近水平壁292b中的显示电极Yb的位置。
在图9所示的等离子体显示面板4中,与上述等离子体显示面板3相同,辅助电极Pd埋入靠近水平壁292b中的显示电极Yb的位置。等离子体显示面板4具有与上述的图1~图3的等离子体显示面板1同样排列的显示电极X和显示电极Y。
按照以上的实施方式,单元50、52是具有用隔离壁围成四方的放电气体空间的面板构造,也就是,即使是单元之间的触发粒子几乎不流通的面板构造,也能减少地址放电错误。即使是减小单元尺寸,触发粒子比较快消失的面板构造,也可以生成有助于地址放电的触发粒子。
在上述的实施方式中,例举了具有平面看为格子状的隔离壁29的等离子体显示面板1、1b、2、3、4,但本发明也可以适用于仅具有多个垂直壁291的所谓的带状构造的等离子体显示面板的驱动。
为了容易引起触发放电部G3的放电,除了使电极的间隙变窄以外,也可以把电介质体减薄或局部改变材质。只要用触发放电部G3响应施加电压而引起快速放电就可以,希望在得到需要量的触发粒子的范围内,引起尽可能小规模的放电。
工业实用性
本发明由于实现寻址的高速化和提高可靠性,所以有助于提高等离子体显示面板的画面的分辨率和提高精细程度。

Claims (4)

1.一种进行线顺序形式的寻址的等离子体显示面板的驱动方法,其特征在于,
进行驱动的等离子体显示面板具有用于行选择的多个扫描电极、用于列选择的多个数据电极、以及用于产生触发放电的多个辅助电极,此外,构成画面的各个单元具有由所述扫描电极和所述数据电极控制的地址放电部、和由所述扫描电极和所述辅助电极控制而且比所述地址放电部容易产生放电的触发放电部,
在进行寻址期间,在所述多个扫描电极上顺序施加扫描脉冲,与此同时,根据显示数据有选择地把用地址放电部引起放电的地址脉冲,施加在所述多个数据电极上,并且控制所述多个辅助电极的电位,以便响应向所述扫描电极施加的所述扫描脉冲,在选择行的单元中的所述触发放电部产生放电,而与是否向所述数据电极施加地址脉冲无关。
2.如权利要求1所述的等离子体显示面板的驱动方法,其特征在于,
对全部的所述辅助电极进行共同的电位控制。
3.如权利要求1或权利要求2所述的等离子体显示面板的驱动方法,其特征在于,
在寻址开始前,在全部单元的显示放电部上施加与所述扫描脉冲同极性的用于电荷调整的钝波电压,
在进行寻址期间,在全部单元中的所述扫描电极和所述辅助电极之间,在施加所述钝波电压中,施加与在所述扫描电极和所述辅助电极之间施加的电压相同或更高的电压。
4.如权利要求1或权利要求2所述的等离子体显示面板的驱动方法,其特征在于,
在寻址开始前,在全部单元的扫描电极上施加用于电荷调整的负极性的钝波电压,
在进行寻址期间,在所述多个扫描电极上顺序施加负极性的扫描脉冲,与此同时,根据显示数据,有选择地在所述多个数据电极上施加正极性的地址脉冲,并且把全部的所述辅助电极的电位保持在比施加所述钝波脉冲中的电位高的电位上。
