Abstract

Description

本发明涉及一种用于连接光导纤维对的可拆卸式连接器。它包括两个耦合件,每个耦合件上至少固定有两根光导纤维的尾部,它们彼此相互平行。这样一来,各光纤端面的中心就排列在耦合件端面的一条直线上。该连接器还包括一个连接器外套,用于容纳两个耦合件,使其端面相互衔接。耦合件和连接器外套包含一种对准装置,保证光纤尾部成对地位于彼此的延长线上。
已知的这种连接器有如美国专利申请说明书US-A-4,272,154中给出的那种。为了使光线在连接器中的损耗减至最小,至关重要的是,每对要耦合的光纤尾部的导光芯应该精确地位于彼此的延长线上。为此,每个耦合件上的各光纤端面的中心有必要等间距地排列在一条直线上。低损耗耦合的第二个条件是,两个耦合件上的光纤端面中心所在的连线应在连接器外套中精确平行,并且至少要有一对要耦合的光纤尾部的相对位置准确对准,这样,其他光纤尾部的位置也自动对准。在已有的连接器中,光导纤维位于耦合件上的一个平坦表面上,它们的位置由安放在所述表面上的盖板上的槽确定。其对准装置由未被盖板盖住的那一部分平坦表面、盖板的一个侧面以及接头外套上的两个参考面构成。两个要固定在一起的耦合件的盖板侧面和槽必须一起一次加工完毕以保证所要求的精度。因此,这样就不大可能在保证精度的条件下,从许多耦合件中去将任意一对耦合件装固在一起。因此,已有连接器不太适用于大批量使用。
本发明的目的是改进本文开始时提到的这类连接器,使之有可能各自独立地生产耦合件然后非常精确地固紧好任何一对所述耦合件。这样,当两个耦合件在连接器外套中连接之后,就自动保证了光导纤维之间的最佳成对耦合。
为此目的,根据本发明,连接器的特征在于,作为其对准装置包括下列几种措施:
a)每个耦合件包含一个外圆柱面,其轴线和固定在所述耦合件中的一根光纤尾部的导光芯的轴线重合。外圆柱面和连接器外套的对中部分相配合,以便两个耦合件在连接器外套中对准。这样,两个外圆柱面的轴线位于彼此的延长线上;
b)每个耦合件包含一个定向件,它能和连接器外套上的一个定向部分相配合,以便耦合件在连接器外套内定向,用这样的方式。使得各光纤端面中心的所在的两条线相互平行。
圆柱外表面构成一个参考面。其位置直接由其中一根光纤尾部导光芯的位置决定,而不取决于另一个耦合件的相应参考面。这一点与已有的连接器完全不同。当两个耦合件在连接器外套中相连时,保证至少有一对光纤能有最佳耦合。由于具有上述定向件和定向部分,同样也保证了光纤端面中心所在的两条连线精确地相互平行,这样,所有光纤对都能达到最佳耦合。两耦合件的相对位置由一个圆柱座标系确定,即由两个相互独立的座标确定取向。而在已有的连接器中,所述取向由一个直角座标系确定,是相互关连的。
一种非常可靠、简便的,能使圆柱外表面轴线和一根光纤尾部的导光芯的轴线相一致的办法已在美国专利申请说明书US-A-4,289,374(PHN    9235)中叙述过,为了采用这种方法,最有利 的情况是:当要耦合的光纤对数为奇数时,使圆柱外表面的轴线和固定在耦合件上中央的一根光纤尾部的导光芯的轴线相重合;而在偶数情况下,则和固定在耦合件上的一排光纤尾部中最靠近中央的两根光纤中的一根的导光芯的轴线相重合。
按照本发明的光纤连接器,另一个实施方案的特征在于,定向件由耦合件上的径向凸块构成,而定向部分是由连接器外套管壁上的一条轴向隙缝所形成的。凸块可由一个圆环提供,圆环环绕安装在耦合件上,并可以转动到直至凸块精确垂直于光纤端面中心所在的连线为止,圆环可在这个位置处锁定。
现在,参考图例对本发明作详细说明。
图1是按照本发明的连接器耦合件实施例的纵向剖面图。

图1至图3所示的耦合件1包含一个套筒,它包括后半部3和前半部5。这两部分都是圆柱形,前半部5的直径小于后半部3的直径。光纤夹持器7与前半部5相连,夹持器上依次平行放置光导纤维(例如5根光纤)的尾部。光纤夹持器7实质上是一个开有平行管孔的长方体,它由两块相对安放的板组成,其中至少有一块板上包含平行槽,用来安放去掉合成树脂保护层11的光纤9的尾部。举例来说,这种光纤夹持器的实例已在欧洲专利申请说明书EP-A-0,109,648号和早先的荷兰专利申请说明书8503409(PHN    11,579)中描述过。装有光纤9尾部的光纤夹持器7从后部(图1中右边)插入套 筒3,5,并胶结住。套筒的后半部3填满合适的模压成型材料13,光纤9经过套筒后半部3伸向外面。
光导纤维9的前边(图1中左边)有着端面15,其中心排列在耦合件1端面19上的直线17上。端面15和端面19经抛光,使整个组件形成一较大曲率半径的圆柱面,其轴线平行于直线17。耦合件1的套筒前半部5的圆柱形外表面是经加工过的,例如根据美国专利申请说明书US-A-4,289,374(PHN    9235)所述的方法来加工,所述圆柱面的轴线就精确地和五根光纤尾部的中央一根的导光芯的轴线相一致。如果光纤尾部数目是偶数(例如4或6),这时就不存在处在中央的光纤尾部。在这种情况下,圆柱形外表面20的轴线最好和一排光纤尾部中最靠近中央的两根光纤中的一根导光芯的轴线相一致。
带径向凸块23的圆环21套在耦合件1外套的后半部3上。转动所述圆环使凸块23垂直于直线17,例如用激光把它焊接在后半部3上,从而固定在耦合件上。凸块23构成定向件。
两个耦合件1可以端面19对着端面19安放在连接器外套25中(参阅图4)。连接器外套25包含一个对中部分27,在本例中它有着空心圆柱套的形式。耦合件的前半部5精确与它配合,这样两耦合件得以定位,它们的轴线和彼此的延长线一致。当然连接器外套25也可采用另一种对中结构,例如带压力装置的V型槽,如同美国专利申请说明书US-A-4,478,485(PHN    10    047)或联邦德国专利申请说明DE-A-3,208,779号(PHD    82-251)所述;锥形夹紧套筒,如美国专利申请说明书US-A-3,982,815所述;或带有三个片簧的套筒,如欧洲专利申请说明书EP-A- 0,185,413(PHN    11    245)所述。
连接器外套25还包含两个定向部分,它们是开在连接器外套管壁上的两个轴向隙缝29。当耦合件1插入连接器外套25时,隙缝29对凸块23起导向作用,所以耦合件在连接器外套中得以定向,以使两条直线17相互精确平行。当然,还有可能采用别的方式来确定耦合件1在连接器外套25中的方向。例如,每个耦合件1的定向件可以是后半部3上的一个或多个平面,而连接器外套25上的定向部分可以是上述实例中隙缝29所在处内表面上的相应平面。
由于对准装置采用上述对中和定向方式,每一对耦合的光纤尾部的轴线得以精确地位于相互的延长线上。由于端面19连同光纤端面15经过抛光使之象前述那样稍呈柱面,所以光纤端面被设置得以精确地相互顶靠着。由于所有这些措施,其结果是每对光纤9达到最佳的相互耦合状态(也就是说,光损耗非常之小,譬如0.5分贝或更小)。

Claims (5)

1、一种用于连接光导纤维对的可拆卸式连接器,其特征在于包括:
a)第一和第二耦合件,每个耦合件包括一个圆柱参考面和一个端面、用于沿一条直线平行地固定至少两根光导纤维的装置,所述圆柱参考面的纵轴线被做成与所述光导纤维之一的轴线相一致;
b)位于各所述第一和第二耦合件之上的定向件,该定向件与所述光导纤维按预定关系而配置;和
c)一个用于连接所述第一和第二耦合件的连接器外套,该外套包括第一和第二圆柱空腔,所述圆柱空腔与所述圆柱参考面密切配合并且按头对头靠近而并置的位置关系将第一和第二耦合件容纳于其中,所述连接器具有用于与所述各耦合件上的定位件配合衔接的装置,使得当所述耦合件放置在连接器外套之内后,各光导纤维都沿着相互平行的直线而被安置。
2、根据权利要求1的连接器,其特征在于所述光导纤维包括奇数根光导纤维,并且所述耦合件的圆柱参考面的轴线与奇数根光导结维的中心一根的光导芯的轴线相一致。
3、根据权利要求1的连接器,其特征在于所述光导纤维包括偶数根光导纤维,并且所述耦合件的圆柱参考面的轴线与紧靠中间一排光纤的两根光纤之一的轴线相一致。
4、根据权利要求1的连接器,其特征在于所述定向件由所述耦合件上的径向凸块所构成,并且所述与定位件配合衔接的装置包括所述连接器外套壁上的一个轴向隙缝。
5、根据权利要求1的连接器,其特征在于每个耦合件的端面被作成圆柱面,其轴线平行于各光纤端面中心所处在的一条直线。
