Process for the preparation of 1-aminoanthraquinone-2-aldehyde. It has been found that when 1-amino-2-methylanthraquinone is heated with aromatic nitro compounds in the presence of alkalis, intensely colored condensation products are obtained. When treated with acids, these intermediate products all produce the same anthraquinone derivative which, according to its properties and the result of the analysis, is to be regarded as 1-aminoanthi-aquinone-2-aldebyd. When preparing the intermediate products, it is advantageous to carry out the reaction with the addition of primary aromatic amines.
Since when the intermediate products are treated with acids, only the formation of amines can be demonstrated which correspond to the nitro compounds used (or the amines under whose addition the intermediate products were presented), it can be assumed that in the interim chemical products azomethiri compounds of the formula:

exist. Example T A solution of 10 kg of 1-amino-2-methyl-antliraquinone in 60 kg of nitrobenzene is obtained at the boil for six hours with the addition of 5 kg of potassium carbonate.
From the hot, filtered solution, the new condensation product separates out when it is cold, which is obtained by crystallization from nitrobenzene in shiny red crystals with a melting point of 212. The compound dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a yellow color, which turns white with the addition of paraformaldehyde. To produce the aldehyde, 10 kg of the intermediate product are punched with 200 kg of glacial acetic acid and 20 kg of concentrated hydrochloric acid for half an hour.
The separated 1-aminoanthraquinone-2-aldeliyd is filtered off after being obtained. The corresponding amount of aniline can be detected in the filtrate.
The 1-arninoaiithracliinon-2-alcteliyd crystallizes from nitrobenzene in shiny metallic crystals that melt at about 923311. It is almost insoluble in alcohol, relatively easily soluble in high-boiling organic solvents. The color of its solution in concentrated sulfuric acid is brown: by adding Paraformaldehvd the color is immediately striking. in an intense blue (im.
With hydrosulut and lye, it delivers a lively green coolant from which cotton is only slightly colored.
Example 2 10 kg of 1-amino-2-methylanthraquinone. 8 kg of 3- \ aphtylamine, 5 kg of molten potassium acetate and 60 kg of nitrobenzene are heated to about 9.25 '(Arit) temperature for six hours. The intermediate product separates out of the hot, filtered solution when it cools. It dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with an orange-red color, which turns blue-green with the addition of parafornialdehyde-d.
To produce the aldehyde, 10 kg of the intermediate product are dissolved in 100 kg of concentrated sulfuric acid. Z of the orange-red solution is gradually run in 20 kg of water, while the teniperatar is not allowed to rise above 90. After the solution has become discolored, the reaction mixture is introduced into water, the 1-aniinoanthachinori- 2-aldehyde separating out in yellow-red flakes, while the corresponding amount of - @ -naphylamine is found in the filtrate.
The properties of the compound are completely identical to those obtained according to Example 1.
