The present invention relates to a modular device for the continuous electrolytic treatment of drinking and service water according to the preamble of patent claim 1.
The electrochemical treatment of water and / or aqueous solutions as well as other suitable as electrolytes solutions is known. The electrical polarization, or ionization, of such solutions usually serves for purification. For the practical production of such ionized solutions, various reactors and devices are known. Typical are so-called round reactors, as an embodiment described in EP0 842 122B1.
In this document, the advantage of the modular design is discussed in detail.
It is possible to provide the desired production capacity by means of a modular design by connecting the necessary number of modules in parallel or serially. Because only the production of a large number of identical modules enables economical production by means of mass production, one is interested in building as many small units as possible. However, these must then be relatively easy to connect in order to meet the demands of greater hydraulic or process engineering requirements.
Pipe modules of the type presented in EP 0 842 122 B1 are proven to be just that and are used successfully for many applications and connection forms.
However, these tube modules are subject to the serious disadvantage that their variety takes a relatively large amount of space. In order to connect many modules in series and / or in parallel, mechanical fixings have to be planned, and for the hydraulic connection one needs pipelines.
This requires a great deal of planning effort, so that these modules can be used flexibly, as described e.g. required in warehousing or military use, are not practical and can not be easily used.
The present invention now has the task of improving a device for continuous electrolytic treatment of drinking and service water of the type mentioned in such a way that the advantages of the known devices are maintained, but the device especially in the connection of modules takes little space, yet can be modular, and there is little hydraulic resistance for the flow of the electrolyte with good mixing.
The modules should also be able to be used as flexibly as possible.
According to the invention, the object is achieved according to the characterizing part of patent claim 1.

The figures represent preferred exemplary embodiment proposals, which are explained in the following description as examples.
The treatment of solutions which are suitable as electrolytes, ie the process for the electrochemical treatment, is shown in FIG. The same or different electrolytes 5, 5 ¾ are fed to the diaphragm analysis module 1, that is to say to the cathode compartment 22 or the anode compartment 12. The plus side of the DC power supply, that is to say the anode 10, attracts all the negatively charged parts of the electrolyte 5, so that the anolyte 11 leaving the anode chamber 12 has a positive charge. The same with reverse polarity is done with electrolytes 5 ¾.
The minus side, ie the cathode 20, attracts all the positively charged parts of the electrolyte 5 ¾, so that the cathode chamber 22 leaving the catholyte 21 has positive charge. Negatively charged parts, which are fed with the electrolyte 5 in the anode compartment 12, remain in the vicinity of the positively charged anode 10 and leave the anode compartment 12 as anolyte 11. Positively charged parts which are fed with the electrolyte 5 ¾ into the cathode compartment 22, remain near the negatively charged cathode 20 and leave the cathode space 22 as catholyte 21.
The electrically neutral diaphragm 4 is permeable to the electrolyte 5 or 5 ¾ to a certain extent, but prevents the mixing of the contents of the anode compartment 12 with the contents of the cathode compartment 22 and thus supports a separation effect.
Positively charged parts, which are fed with the electrolyte 5 into the anode compartment 12, look for the way through the diaphragm 4 in the cathode compartment 22 and leave it as catholyte 21. They are attracted by the negatively charged cathode 20. With the negatively charged parts, which are fed with the electrolyte 5 ¾ in the cathode chamber 22, the same thing happens in the opposite sense. They pass through the diaphragm 4 and leave the anode compartment 12 as anolyte 11.
The presented device, so the Diaphragmalysemodul 1 of the inventive type is constructed in sandwich construction. On the outside, two insulator plates 2 and 2 define the diaphragm analysis module 1 (FIG. 2). In between are the anode plate 10 and the cathode plate 20, which in turn surround the spacer plates 3 and 3 ¾, which then hold a diaphragm 4 again.
This diaphragm 4 is a membrane which allows the mixing of Anolyte 11 and 21 Katolyte between anode chamber 12 and cathode chamber 22 only partially and the exchange difficult, positive or negative charged parts but still passes.
To give a Diaphragmalysemodul 1 the necessary mechanical strength, it is held together with a base plate 30 and a cover plate 31. The design solution allows only by extending the screws, which are used between the base plate 30 and cover plate 31, one or more modules 1, 1 ¾, 1 ¾ ¾, etc. assembled into a block (Fig. 3).
In order to use the sandwich construction, it requires special designs of the anode plates 15, cathode plates 25, insulator plates 2 and spacer plates. 3
The structural design of anode plate 15 and cathode plate 25 and the anode 10 and the cathode 20 is identical. In Fig. 4, the structure used for the anode plate 15 and the cathode plate 25 is shown.
For the sake of simpler explanation, the anode 10 shown in FIG. 4, cathode 20 with electrodes 6 and the gasket with the same type of seal 7 will be referred to hereafter. The thickness of the electrodes 6 is normally about 3 mm to 4 mm, hereinafter referred to as x. Electrodes 6 and electrode seal 7 are formed in a form-fitting manner (FIG. 4). The shape of the electrode 6 is similar to a rectangle in the present example, but may have any shape. The electrode seal 7 is formed so that it encloses the electrode 6 in a form-fitting manner.
The electrode seal 7 is made of highly elastic insulating and sealing material. This electrode seal 7 has a thickness x ¾ of certainly more than x (x ¾> x) During assembly, the electrode seal 7 is pressed, so that the elastic electrode seal 7 closes and seals all the gaps between the electrode 6 and the current conducting part 8. In particular, the inflow channels 34 for the electrolyte 5 and the outflow channels for anolyte 35 and catholyte 36 must also be hydraulically tight against the electrode 6 and against the insulation plate 2 (FIG. 2).
For the operation of Diaphragmalysemoduls 1, the installation is important. As shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, inflow 34 of the electrolyte 5 should be arranged as low as possible in the vertical direction and the outlets 35 and 36 of anolyte 11 and catholyte 21 should be arranged as high as possible.
In this way, the gases 3 produced in the electrochemical reaction are always automatically removed together with Anolyte 11 through the discharge channel 14 and with catholyte 21 through the discharge channel 24.
In Fig. 5 the function of the two spacer plates 45 and 45 ¾ is shown. The spacer 40 is formed in the present example as a circular disk. However, the spacer 40 may have any shape. The spacer 40 has a thickness y. A spacer seal 41 must wrap around the spacer 40 in a form-fitting manner. The spacer gasket 41 will have a greater thickness y ¾ than y (y ¾> = y). During assembly, the spacer seal 41 is pressed so that it seals tightly against the anode plate 15, the diaphragm 4 and the cathode plate 25 (FIG. 2).
The two spacer gaskets 41 and 41 ¾ have equal inflow and outflow channels, but are each around the vertical by 180 deg. installed twisted. This is shown in FIGS. 7 and 8. The spacer seal 41 ¾ of the spacer plate 45 ¾ which bears against the cathode plate 25 is arranged in such a way that the outflow channel 24 for catholyte 21 and the opposite inlet channel 34 ¾ are supplied to the electrolyte 5 ¾ of the cathode space 22 can. The spacer plate 41 of the spacer plate 45 resting against the anode plate 15 is arranged such that the outlet channel 14 for anolyte 11 and the opposite inlet channel 34 for the electrolyte 5 of the anode compartment 12 can be fed. Although electrolyte 5 and electrolyte 5 ¾ can be identical, as described earlier, different solutions can be introduced for specific process applications.
Depending on the properties of the electrolytes 5 or 5 ¾, catholyte 21 and anolyte 11 will also have different properties.
The mechanical connection of the base plate 30, the insulator plate 2, the anode plate 15, the cathode plate 25, the spacer plates 45, 45 ¾ and the cover plate 31 will be explained below with reference to the insulator plate 2 (FIG. 5). All of these components of a Diaphragmalysemoduls 1 of the inventive type have all shown in Fig. 6 holes 14, 24, 33, 34 and 34 ¾ on. The functional significance of the inlet and outlet openings 14, 24, 34 ¾ and 34 is described above. The holes 33 are used for easy connection of all parts. Depending on the number of desired modules 1, longer or shorter screws 35 (FIGS. 2, 3) are inserted into the bores 33 provided for this purpose in order to compress the entire package.
As described for the electrode seal 7 and the spacer seal 41 above, all the parts comprising the diaphragm-malfunctioning module 1 are pressed together. It should be noted that all screws 35 are tightened evenly so that the sealing of the elements is ensured.
The electrodes 6 (anode 10 and cathode 20) are shown in FIG. 4 with the electrode seal 7 a unit and form the anode plate 15 and the cathode plate 25, which are structurally identical. The electrode 6 is equipped with a power connection 9 via a current-carrying part 8 enclosed by the electrode seal 7. The electrodes 6 are connected to a DC source of e.g. 24 volts connected.
The cathode 20 is connected to the negative and the anode 10 to the positive pole.
The construction of the spacer plate 45 and the spacer 40 has been given special attention. The spacer 40 consists of a cast braid with a thickness of about 3 mm to 10 mm and a mesh size of about 4 mm to 8 mm. The thread diameter is approx. 1.5 mm to 5 mm. The ratio of thread diameter to gap forms a ratio of 1: 2 to 1: 4. The spacer braid should be flooded by the electrolyte 5 over the longer diagonal of the mesh. Therefore, the orientation of the mesh fabric of the spacer 40 during installation must be considered.
By choosing a cast braid one achieves that the spacer has no dead spaces.
During the process, it is important that the Anolyte 10 formed in the anode compartment 12 and the catholyte 20 formed in the cathode compartment 22 are completely washed out by freshly supplied electrolyte 5 and 5 ¾. In this way, a step method is made possible. Depending on the need for the quality of Anolyte 10 and catholyte 20, it is possible to control a gradual loading of the diaphragm emulsion module 1. Of course, the cycle times are in the fast second cycle of approx. 0.5 to 5 seconds. They depend, of course, on the volume of the anode and cathode chambers 12 and 22. The modular design of the diaphragm emulsion module 1 makes it possible to use cathode compartment 22 and anode compartment 12 for special applications with different volumes.
This is advantageous and allows optimal adjustment only when the supplied electrolyte 5 and electrolyte 5 ¾ different and other residence times for the right qualities can be applied.
To avoid limescale deposits on the electrodes 6 and to clean the electrodes 6, the poles of the DC power source are changed from time to time. After the polarity reversal, the lumps of caked on the electrodes 6 are released and leave the Diaphragmalysemodul 1 together with Anolyte 11, catholyte 21 and the gases 3. This cleaning process can be installed in the step described above. Cleaning is automatic and the process continues without manual intervention.
Which sequence of steps or after how many of the above-described steps a cleaning process is to be incorporated is determined empirically. The operator of the system is well advised to check this step-by-step from time to time and adjust it according to the findings.
