The present invention relates to alpha-quinacridone derivatives and to a process for their preparation.
Specifically, the present invention relates to new alpha-quinacridone derivatives for pigments, characterized by the general formula (I) below, and to a process for their preparation.
EMI1.1
where A = cyclopenta-, methylenedioxy- with one ring, or indeno- or N-ethylindolo- with two rings.
Various processes for the production of quinacridone are known and described in US Pat. Nos. 2,821,541, 3,287,457 and 2,821,529 and in German Pat. No. 1,253,705, the typical processes being as follows:
EMI1.2
EMI2.1
This means that diethyl 1,4-cyclohexanedione 2,5-dicarboxylate of the general formula (II) is reacted with aniline to give diethyl 2,5-dianilino-3,6-dihydroterephthalate of the general formula (VI) to manufacture. This compound of the general formula (VI) is converted into 6,13-dihydroquinacridone of the general formula (VII) by means of cyclization, whereupon the said compound of the general formula (VII) is reacted with the sodium salt of the meta-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid in order to To obtain quinacridone of the general formula (V).
These alpha quinacridones of the general formula (V), as described in US Pat. Nos. 2,844,485 and 2,844,581, are converted into beta and gamma quinacridones of the general formula (V) using xylene or dimethylformamide, etc. as a solvent.
Quinacridones of the general formula (V) can be present in the form of four different crystalline types (alpha, beta, gamma and delta), which can be demonstrated by means of X-ray diffraction. These benzene nucleus-substituted derivatives of quinacridones of the general formula (V) are known as chloro or methyl group-substituted derivatives, but some compounds are also known, e.g. Benzene-substituted derivatives that are commercially undesirable. In the known compounds, R represents substituents such as chloro or methyl groups, or cyclic compounds such as benzene.
The present invention provides a process for the preparation of new alpha-quinacridone derivatives of the general formula (I) with one or two rings, so as to provide novel quinacridones for pigments, in terms of color and fabric manufacture.
Quinacridone derivatives of the general formula (I) which are fused with rings such as cyclopenta- or methylenedioxy- are reddish compounds. Among them, the quinacridone derivative which is substituted with cyclopenta is particularly excellent in color and clarity.
The quinacridone derivatives defined according to the present invention are resp. characterized by the characterizing part of claim 1.
The process for their preparation takes place in accordance with the reaction sequence according to claim 2.
The present invention can be characterized according to the following reaction scheme:
EMI4.1
The individual reactions are described more specifically below and in connection with their individual reaction steps in more detail:
In process step 1, diethyl 1,4-cyclohexanedione-2,5-dicarboxylate of the general formula (II) reacts with aromatic amine derivatives of the general formula (III min) under a nitrogen atmosphere, using trifluoroacetic acid as a catalyst, and toluene or xylene as Solvents are used to obtain diethyl 2,5-dianilino-3,6-dihydroterephthalate derivatives of the general formula (VI min). The aromatic amine of the general formula (III min) used is 5-aminoindane, 3,4- (methylenedioxy) aniline, 2-aminofluorene or 3-amino-9-ethylcarbazole, and in the general formula (VI min) A denotes cyclopenta -, Methylenedioxy-, Indeno- or N-Ethylindolo.
In process step 2, said compound of the general formula (VI min) is reacted at a temperature in the range between 250 and 257 ° C. for one hour under a nitrogen atmosphere using the known DOWTHERM A as solvent, comprising a gel-sol mixture of 23 5% biphenyl and 76.5% diphenyl ether, with high boiling points (250 ° to 257 ° C.) to produce 6,13-dihydroquinacridone derivatives of the general formula (VII min). In the general formula (VII min), A has the same meaning as in the general formula (VI min).
In process step 3, 6,13-dihydroquinacridone derivatives of the general formula (VII min) are oxidized in the presence of ethanol, water and a solution of sodium hydroxide and the sodium salt of meta-nitrobenzenesulfonic acid in order to produce new alpha-quinacridone derivatives. In these new alpha-quinacridone derivatives, A has the same meaning as in the general formula (VI) or in the general formula (VII).
In the meantime, the new alpha-quinacridone derivatives of the general formula (I) produced have been characterized by means of the X-ray diffraction method as shown in Tables 1, 2, 3 and 4 below:

The following examples are intended to describe this invention in detail and all components of the examples are based on parts by weight.
Example 1:
150 parts of toluene were introduced into a 500 ml three-round neck round-bottom flask equipped with a thermometer, reflux condenser and DEAN-Stark fractionation column. 25.6 parts (0.1 mol) of diethyl 1,6-cyclohexanedione-2,5-dicarboxylate were fed into the reaction bath while nitrogen was being introduced, and then dissolved by heating. Subsequently 28 parts of 5-amino-indan were added and dissolved, whereupon the mixture was refluxed with the addition of 0.5 part of trifluoroacetic acid as a catalyst. The resulting water was removed using the DEAN-Stark fractionation column.
After two hours, said reaction mixture was slowly cooled while passing nitrogen gas through it, and then, after adding 200 parts of methyl alcohol, filtered by 45 parts (92.6%) of diethyl-2,5 bis- (5-indanylamino) -3,6- Obtain dihydroterephthalate (VI min).
