Abstract
The drill has a flexible stem (1) extended at one end by a cutting portion (1a) whose length is a fraction of that of the stem. This portion has spiral cutting ridges, and ends in a non-cutting tip (1b), whose length is a few tenths of a millimetre. The sleeve (3) at the other end of the stem is shaped to allow operation by hand. It can be roughly cylindrical, the generatrix of the cylinder being an arc of a circle (4) concave towards the outside. The stem diameter can be between 0.2 and 1.5 mm. ADVANTAGE - Easy operation by hand, providing the dentist with a sense of touch when in use and reduces the risk of breakage.
Description
The present invention relates to a drill for boring dental root canals comprising a flexible rod extending at one of its ends by a cutting part, the length of which is a submultiple of that of said rod, having helical cutting edges, and which ends in a non-cutting point, a few tenths of a millimeter in length.
Drills of the aforementioned type, known to those skilled in the art as "Gates drills", are always used with the aid of a handpiece or a contra-angle, that is to say driven mechanically. Their end opposite to that which has the cutting means is therefore provided with coupling means to the PTO member of the handpiece or contra-angle.
The object of the present invention is to provide such a drill which is capable of being actuated manually.
This object is achieved by the means defined in claim 1.
The drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a drill of the so-called "Gates" type.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the working end of said drill, and
Fig. 3 is a section along line III-III of FIG. 1.
The drill represented comprises a smooth flexible rod 1 whose length can vary from 14 to 30 mm and whose diameter is between 0.16 and 1.5 mm, extended by a cutting part 1a, of ovoid shape, the length of which may vary from 0.5 to 10 mm, having three helical cutting edges 2 (fig. 3), and which finally ends with a smooth tip 1b, of smaller diameter than the rod 1, the length of which varies from 0.17 at 0.53 mm.
At its end opposite to that having the cutting part 1a, the rod 1 ends in a part 1c of larger diameter on which is embedded a handle 3, of a material, plastic or other, resistant to the sterilization treatment which must undergo the 'instrument, and which allows to activate it manually. This handle is constituted by a body of revolution whose generator, designated by 4, is in an arc, its concavity being turned towards the outside. It also has longitudinal grooves 5 improving its hold between the practitioner's fingers.
The possibility of manually actuating a drill for boring the dental root canals is particularly appreciable for drills of very small diameters, which are the most fragile, because it makes it possible to take advantage of the tactile sense of the practitioner to reduce the risks of fracture of the instrument in use.
