The present invention relates to a cigarette and to a method for producing a cigarette.
Cigarettes are typically provided with a tobacco rod made of compressed tobacco material. They are usually circular or oval in a cross section perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.
The present invention provides a cigarette according to the wording of claim 1.
With the present invention, a cigarette tobacco rod or a tobacco column is created which has a higher bending resistance or a greater bending strength than pressed tobacco rods.
In particular, the present invention provides a cigarette with a substantially cylindrical tube of tobacco material, the peripheral wall of the tobacco tube having corrugations that extend with their combs and grooves over the entire length of the tobacco tube and are oriented in the longitudinal direction thereof. Furthermore, a covering made of combustible material is provided which circumscribes the outer circumferential surface of the tobacco pipe and is in contact with the crests of the corrugations. At one end of the tobacco pipe, a smoke filter rod is arranged coaxially with the tobacco pipe. The coated tobacco pipe is overlapped in the circumferential direction and at its end adjacent to the filter rod by a mouthpiece material enclosing the filter rod.
The present invention further provides a method of making a cigarette, the method comprising the step of:
Forming a sheet of tobacco material, molding corrugations into the sheet of tobacco material, deforming the corrugated sheet of tobacco material into a substantially cylindrical tube on which the crests and grooves of the corrugations extend in the longitudinal direction of the tube, enveloping the tube of tobacco in the circumferential direction with a layer of combustible material, placing a smoke filter rod coaxial with the tobacco tube at one end thereof, and folding a mouthpiece material around the filter rod so that it circumferentially overlaps the tobacco tube at the end of the tobacco tube that the filter rod is adjacent.

10 shows a detailed variant, and
11 shows a detailed variant of FIG. 4.
1 to 3, a cigarette 10 can be seen which contains a tube 12 made of tobacco material and a filter rod 14.
The tobacco pipe 12 has a peripheral wall 16 made of tobacco material. The circumferential wall 16 of the tube is corrugated and has grooves 18 and ridges 20 of the corrugations, which extend in the longitudinal direction of the tobacco tube 12 and over the entire length of the tobacco tube 12. A covering 22 made of combustible material circumscribes the outer peripheral surface of the tobacco pipe 12 and is in contact with the combs 20 of the corrugations. The envelope 22 can e.g. be a paper or tobacco material.
The smoke filter rod 14 is arranged coaxially to the tobacco pipe 12 at one end of the tobacco pipe 12. The filter rod 14 is attached to the wrapped tobacco pipe 12 with a mouthpiece material 24. The mouthpiece material 24 circumscribes the filter rod 14 and also overlaps the wrapped tobacco tube 12 in the circumferential direction, namely at the end of the tobacco tube 12 which is adjacent to the filter rod 14.
A cigarette 110 can be seen from FIGS. 4 to 6, which has a tube 112 made of tobacco material and a filter rod 114.
The tobacco pipe 112 has a peripheral wall 116 made of tobacco material. The peripheral wall 116 is corrugated and therefore has grooves 118 and ridges 120 of the corrugations which extend over the entire length of the tobacco tube 112 and in the longitudinal direction thereof.
A first covering 122 made of combustible material circumscribes the outer peripheral surface of the tobacco pipe 116. It is in contact with the combs 120 of the corrugations. The first wrapper 122 may e.g. Be paper or a tobacco material.
A second envelope 123 made of combustible material circumscribes the inner peripheral surface of the tobacco pipe 116 and is in contact with the combs 120 of the corrugations. The second envelope 123 can e.g. be a paper or tobacco material.
The filter rod 114 is coaxial with the tobacco tube 112 and is arranged at one end of the tobacco tube 112. The filter rod 114 is attached to the wrapped tobacco tube 112 with a mouthpiece material 124. The mouthpiece material 124 circumscribes the filter rod 114 and overlaps the encased tobacco tube 112 at the end of the tobacco tube 112 that is adjacent to the filter rod 114.
Referring to FIG. 7, the tobacco tube 12, 112 of the cigarette 10, 110 is made by forming a flat plate 30 from tobacco material. The tobacco plate 30 can e.g. be formed from reconstituted tobacco material. A variety of processes are known in this art to produce such panels 30 from tobacco material. For example, such plates 30 can be made from tobacco material by mixing tobacco material such as particles of tobacco leaf, stem, vein, and granule or granules with water to form a slurry. A binder such as guar gum, methyl cellulose, sodium carboxy methyl cellulose or the like is added to the slurry to assist in the formation of a coherent sheet of tobacco material. The slurry is then poured or molded into the shape of the flat plate 30.
The water is removed, e.g. by heating the tobacco material plate 30.
Referring to Fig. 8, it can be seen how to form a corrugated plate 32 of tobacco material from the flat plate 30 by molding a series of consecutive, parallel, and alternately folded back and forth folds, the corrugations being formed to top and define successive grooves 18 and ridges 20 below.
Then, as shown in Fig. 9, the corrugated plate 32 is folded to form the cylindrical tube 12, e.g. for the cigarette 10, which is shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 with the grooves 18 and combs 20 in the longitudinal direction of the cylindrical tube 12. The longitudinal edges of the folded and corrugated plate 32 can be glued together to hold the plate 32 in the cylindrical configuration of the tube 12. The cylindrical tobacco pipe 12 is encased in the circumferential direction with the casing 22. The longitudinal edges of the envelope 22 are overlapped and attached to each other by gluing.
FIG. 10 illustrates an alternative to the embodiment according to FIG. 9. In FIG. 10, a layer of the covering 22 is placed on one side of the corrugated plate 32 made of tobacco material in contact with the combs 20 of the corrugations. The corrugated plate 32 is then brought into the form of a tube with the ridges 20 and the groove 18 extending in the longitudinal direction of the tube and with the sheath 22 lying on the outer periphery of the tobacco tube 12.
11 illustrates another embodiment, for the tobacco tube 112 of the cigarette 110 according to FIG. 4. In FIG. 11, a layer of a wrapper 122 is placed on one side of the corrugated plate 32 made of tobacco material in contact with the combs 20 of the corrugations. On the other side of the corrugated plate 32 of tobacco material, another layer of an envelope 123 is placed in contact with the crests 20 of the corrugations. The corrugated layer 32 is then shaped into a tube such that the grooves 18 and ridges 20 extend in the longitudinal direction of the tube, with the sheath 122 on the outer periphery of the tobacco tube and the sheath 123 on the inner periphery of the tobacco tube comes to rest.
The amount of suction-and-pull that a smoker is required to pull at the filter end of the cigarette can be determined by selecting different materials for the filter rod. It is also possible to choose different densities of the filter rod material in order to create a pressure drop across the filter rod which produces a pulling effect similar to that of a conventional filter cigarette.
