The present invention relates to a piece of jewelry, such as an earring or a brooch provided with a clamp, comprising a first part, a second part pivotally assembled at one end of the first part, and a separate leaf spring. assembled to the first part so that it bears against one end of the second part with a thrust which can be adjusted by screwing means, one of the ends of the second part having a shape which cooperates with the spring with blade for determining for the first and second parts two angularly distant stable positions, in one of which the first and the second parts are approximately relatively parallel to each other and are simultaneously subjected to the thrust of the spring to blade and in the other the first and the second part form with each other an angle.
Such a piece of jewelry is described in patent GB-A 788,215. There is described in particular an earring comprising a first member 13 and a second member 14 forming a clip assembled pivotally by one of their ends. A flat spring is pivotally mounted on one of the members, one of the ends of which rests against the free end of the other member and is actuated by a screw. The purpose of the spring is to push one of the members into a first position where the two members are practically parallel and adjacent and also into a second position where the two members are distant and form an angle.
The screw is used to adjust the spring thrust. In this embodiment, the lateral edges of one of the members supporting the spring are folded and a pair of holes is provided to allow the assembly of the spring.
This construction is relatively complicated and finally the screw only allows the adjustment of the thrust.
The object of the present invention is to propose a simpler solution.
The article according to the invention is characterized in that the leaf spring is assembled to the first part by the screwing means which ensure the adjustment of the spring thrust.
The advantage of the article according to the invention is the simplicity of the construction obtained by the fact that the screw has two distinct functions, one assembling the spring on one of the parts forming the clamp and the second adjusting the thrust spring
Preferably, one end of the second part has at least two planar or approximately planar surfaces which cooperate with the leaf spring to define said two stable positions.
Advantageously, one end of the leaf spring is housed in a housing of the first part and the other end of the leaf spring bears against the end of the second part, the screwing means, assembling the leaf spring to the first part, located at an intermediate position between the ends of said spring.
Preferably the leaf spring is arched in the longitudinal direction
With such a device, the gripping force exerted by the leaf spring can be adjusted by the user and this is particularly advantageous when the item of jewelry is an earring.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing:
fig. 1 is a perspective view of an earring according to the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the first part of the earring of FIG. 1,
fig. 3 is an exploded side view of the earring of FIG. 1,
fig. 4 is a side view of the earring of FIG. 1 shown in a first position, and
fig. 5 is a side view of the earring of FIG. 1 shown in a second position.
Referring now to the drawing, the earring shown comprises a first part 10 and a second part 12 pivotally assembled to each other by their respective ends 11 and 13, and a leaf spring 17. The end 11 of the first part 10 is bifurcated and the end 13 of the second part 12 fits between the two blanks of the bifurcated end 11 and is pivotally assembled there by means of an axis 14 passing through holes aligned provided on the respective ends 11 and 13.
Two flat or approximately flat surfaces 15 and 16, generally lying at right angles to one another, are provided at the end 13 of the second part 12.
The leaf spring 17 is assembled to the first part 10 by a screw 19 which extends through an opening 18 provided at an intermediate position between the ends of the leaf spring and which is screwed into a tapped hole provided on the first part 10.
The first part 10 has an integrated housing 20 consisting of a V-shaped part 21 extending perpendicular to the surface of the part 10 and a flange 22 extending from the upper part of the projection 21 towards the end 11 of the first part 10. One end 23 of the leaf spring 17 is formed so as to fit in the housing 20.
Two projections 25 are provided on the two blanks of the end 11 of the first part 10 on the same side as the housing 20. The other end 24 of the leaf spring 17 passes between the two projections 25 and is pushed by the screw 19 against one or the other of the surfaces 15, 16 of the end 13 of the second part 12. The housing 20 and the projections 25 thus serve to guide and contain the leaf spring 17 against the pivoting movements.
The spring 17 and the end 13 of the part 12 cooperate to define two stable positions of the parts 10 and 12 angularly spaced.
When the end 24 of the leaf spring 17 bears against the surface 15, the second part 12 extends at an angle relative to the first part 10, as shown in FIG. 4. When the end 24 of the leaf spring 17 bears against the flat surface 16, the second part 12 extends approximately parallel to the first part 10 and is pushed against the latter part by the leaf spring 17 as shown in fig. 5.
The leaf spring 17 is arcuate in the longitudinal direction. By tightening the screw 19, the pushing force applied by the spring 17 on the end 13 of the second part 12 increases. This has the effect that the gripping force is greater when the two parts 10 and 12 extend in a position approximately parallel to each other. By loosening the screw 19, the pushing force applied by the spring 17 decreases.
As shown in the figures, a loop 26 is provided at the free end of the first part 10 of the earring to allow comfortable pinching. One or more ornamental elements (not shown) are mounted on the second part 12.
The article described is given by way of example and several modifications obvious to those skilled in the art can be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
