Beschreibung description
The invention generally relates to a method for reducing the build-up of internal pressure in a storage container, in particular in a final storage container, for radioactive waste materials which contain metallic, corrosion-resistant components and residual water. In the case of storage containers which are sealed in a pressure-tight manner, in particular final storage containers, for radioactive waste materials which have metallic, corrosion-resistant components, an internal pressure build-up sometimes shows that increases with increasing storage time. This can affect the security of the storage.
The invention has for its object to provide a 'method with which the described internal pressure build-up can be reduced. In the context of the invention, reducing also means completely preventing the build-up of internal pressure.
To achieve this object, the invention teaches that, in addition to the radioactive waste materials, chemical substances are introduced into the storage container which bind hydrogen under the thermodynamic state variables which prevail in the storage container and / or oxidize to water with the release of oxygen. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the radioactive waste and the chemical substances are mixed intimately.
Within the scope of the invention, a wide variety of chemical substances can be used. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, chemical substances from the group “CuO, AgOH, AgMnCU” or mixtures thereof are added. The addition of CuO is only recommended if it is storage containers that are set up for relatively high temperatures and storage that takes place at sufficiently high temperatures. AgOa + MnOz can also be added as a mixture as chemical substances. It is within the scope of the invention to work with so-called re-combinators. These are chemical substances that are used, for example, in closed motor vehicle batteries. They bring about a recombination of hydrogen and oxygen to water.
The invention is not based on experiments belonging to the prior art, which show that the build-up of internal pressure is based on corrosion phenomena in the interior of the storage container if the radioactive waste materials have corrosive metals and residual water, in particular those which, owing to the large surface area of the metal-corrosive components oxidize more or less violently in the radioactive waste and thus corrode. Hydrogen is released and bound according to the invention. As far as the hydrogen is bound, it can no longer contribute to the build-up of pressure. A preferred embodiment of the invention is characterized in that the chemical substances with respect to the reaction equations a) CuO + H2 → Cu + H2O
b) 2AgOH + H2-> 2Ag + 2H20 b) 2AgOH + H2-> 2Ag + 2H20
c) 2Ag Mn04 + 3Hz -¥ 3 H2O + 2 MnOz + AgsO c) 2Ag Mn04 + 3Hz - ¥ 3 H2O + 2 MnOz + AgsO
d) AggO + 2 MnÛ2 + H2 H2O + 2Ag + 2MnÖ2 H2O + Ag20 + Mn2Ö3 d) AggO + 2 MnÛ2 + H2 H2O + 2Ag + 2MnÖ2 H2O + Ag20 + Mn2Ö3
Since water is released during the oxidation of the hydrogen, a preferred embodiment of the invention is characterized in that water-binding substances, in particular dry cement and / or fine-grained amorphous silicon dioxide, are additionally introduced. It is within the scope of the invention to additionally introduce activated carbon in order to bind other gases which form during storage.
