The present invention relates to a carbon lining of a melt flow electrolysis cell or a foundry furnace, in particular for the cathode tub of an electrolysis cell for the production of aluminum, with a bottom made of prefabricated carbon blocks which extend over its entire width and are arranged in a sealing manner and one with the carbon blocks multi-piece, bricked or stamped side wall.
Foundry furnaces are used in a known manner for melting, standing, casting or refining metals and for producing alloys.
In smelting technology, melt flow electrolysis cells are used in particular in the manufacture of aluminum. The aluminum oxide is dissolved in a fluoride-containing melt, which consists largely of cryolite. The cathodically deposited aluminum collects on the bottom of the cathode trough, under the molten electrolyte, the surface of the liquid aluminum forming the cathode, on solid-state cathodes as a thin film. Anodes, which consist of amorphous carbon in conventional processes, are immersed in the electrolyte from above. The oxygen produced by the decomposition of the aluminum oxide in the melt flow electrolysis reacts with the carbon of the anpids, whereby CO2 and CO are formed.
The electrolysis process for the production of aluminum is carried out in a temperature range of approximately 940 to 970 ° C.
Melt flow electrolysis cells and foundry furnaces of known design generally consist of an outer steel trough which is provided with an insulation layer on the inside. The carbon lining forming the cathode tub is embedded in this insulation.
In melt flow electrolysis cells, cathode bars are anchored in an electrically conductive manner in the lower region of the carbon base, which pass through the insulation layer and the steel trough and are connected to the electrical current-carrying busbars.
The blocks forming the bottom of the cathode lining of known melt flow electrolysis cells for the production of aluminum or foundry furnaces usually have a rectangular or square cross section. The blocks consisting of amorphous carbon, semigraphite or graphite are bonded to one another in accordance with the known embodiments by means of a ramming compound or are bonded to one another by a carbon-containing adhesive in accordance with newer methods.
It is known from Swiss Patent No. 561 784 to arrange the carbon blocks in a log-correct manner.
Each block has at least one trapezoidal cross-sectional area. The blocks in the middle preferably consist of graphite, the edge blocks of amorphous carbon. The joint width between the blocks is less than 1 mm; the gap is cast with a metal or stamped with a carbon-containing mass.
The inventor has set himself the task of creating a carbon lining of a melt flow electrolysis cell or of a foundry furnace with a base, which has a favorable effect on the power distribution at low cost, can be produced with low occupational hygiene and has a long mechanical durability.
The object is achieved according to the invention in that interlocking or overlapping butt joints, which lie in more than one plane, are formed between the individual carbon blocks of the floor.
By forming a more or less pronounced toothing of the side butt joints of the carbon blocks, the need for a connection by means of a ramming compound or the full-surface application can be avoided
an adhesive is eliminated.
The carbon lining is preferably expediently coated with a special mass or before the melt flow electrolysis cell or the metallurgical furnace is put into operation.
filled with a special electrolyte, which is liquefied on the ground. This special mass or this special electrolyte preferably consist of neutral flux with a certain proportion of alumina, sodium carbonate and hard flux or a special electrolyte which contains a lot of CaF2 or MgF2. The carbon blocks are sealed after a few hours. The molten metal, for example aluminum, is only then filled into the carbon lining or deposited in it.
The longitudinal butt joints of the carbon blocks can, however, also be sealed by a carbon-containing adhesive of known composition applied at least in the upper region of the base. The carbon-containing adhesive cokes when the melt-flow electrolysis cell or the foundry furnace is started up and thus forms a sealing connection.
In all variants according to the invention for the carbon blocks, the terminal, i.e. the elements that laterally close the bottom of the carbon lining are closed off with a vertical side surface, while on the inside they adopt the respective profile of the non-terminal carbon blocks.
With regard to the geometry of the cross section of the non-terminal blocks of the bottom of the carbon lining, the following variants can be designed according to the invention: - all cross sections are identical, - all cross sections are alternately the same, or - all cross sections have a plane of symmetry vertical to the bottom of the electrolysis bath and are alternating equal.
According to a first embodiment of the invention, the butt joints between the carbon blocks are step-shaped over the entire length, the step preferably being rectangular or almost rectangular.
According to a further embodiment of the invention, the butt joints between the carbon blocks have at least one protrusion which is polygonal in cross-section and which engages with at least one groove in the adjacent carbon block (s). The cross section of the polygonal projection is preferably rectangular or square, but it can also be triangular or as an outward opening trapezoid, the groove always having the same cross-sectional shape.
Finally, the butt joints according to a further embodiment of the invention can be formed by at least one projection which extends over the entire length between the carbon blocks and is round in cross section and which engages with at least one groove of the adjacent carbon block (s) be. The round cross section is preferably circular, designed as a segment or at most a semicircle.
To discharge the electrical current, the carbon blocks can be provided with at least one, preferably rectangular, round or dovetail-shaped groove which is open at the bottom and can accommodate a continuous or two separate cathode bars.
Cathode bars are stamped, poured, glued or clamped in a known manner.
To produce the bottom of the carbon lining, the carbon blocks are manufactured in accordance with the specification, the tolerances being selected in accordance with the dimensions. The individual carbon blocks are connected to one another by placing one of the special masses mentioned above on the floor or by applying a carbon-containing adhesive in the uppermost region of the butt joint. When the electrolysis cell or the furnace are started up, the liquid metal is only added or separated after several hours.
In the production of cathode wells for melt flow electrolysis cells for the production of aluminum, for example, carbon blocks are used which have a height of up to 500 mm, a width of up to 750 mm and a length of up to 3600 mm.
The use of a carbon lining according to the invention, in particular for the cathode trough of an electrolytic cell for the production of aluminum, can achieve the following advantages: - There is no need to stamp the joints between the carbon blocks, which eliminates an uncertainty factor, - due to the lower hourly expenditure and reduced tamping mass consumption a significant cost saving can also be achieved, - the hygiene conditions at the workplace can be improved in the production of the carbon trough, - all carbon qualities can be used, ie
the blocks can be made of amorphous carbon, semigraphite or graphite, - the current distribution is favorably influenced and runs within certain values, - temperature differences are less serious during the calcination of the cathode trough, - the mechanical durability is improved, in particular because the individual carbon blocks are better against each other slide, and - the floor insulation infiltration by electrolyte vapors is reduced.
The invention is explained in more detail using the exemplary embodiments shown in the drawing. The schematic vertical partial sections through floors of carbon linings show the terminal carbon blocks and at least one of the non-terminal carbon blocks, each in
FIG. 1 on both sides with a right-angled step,
FIG. 2 on one side with two projections which are rectangular in cross section and on the other side with two corresponding grooves,
FIG. 3 with alternately identical carbon blocks, each with a right-angled step,
Figure 4 on one side with a semicircular projection and on the other side with a corresponding groove, and
Figure 5 is alternately the same carbon blocks with on each side a semicircular projection or a correspondingly formed groove is formed.
In FIGS. 1, 2 and 4, all non-terminal carbon blocks are of identical design with respect to the cross section, in FIGS. 3 and 5 the carbon blocks are of alternating design with respect to the cross section and have a plane of symmetry running vertically to the bottom of the carbon trough (p ).
The terminal carbon blocks 12 closing the bottom 10 of the carbon trough laterally have a vertical end surface on their outside. On their inside they have a butt joint 14 with a non-terminal carbon block 16, which lies in more than one plane. All carbon blocks 12, 16 have a groove 18 for cathode bars, which is rectangular and is open at the bottom.
The stages are designated 20, the projections 22 and the corresponding grooves 24.
