Fig. 2 ein Prinzipschema eines zweiten Ausführungsbei spiels,
Chemical Engineering, Volume 1, J.M. Coulson and J.F.

The invention relates to a flow measuring device according to the preamble of patent claim 1.
Flow measuring devices with very large measuring ranges (1: 100 to 1: 500) are increasingly required today. This trend is particularly noticeable where such measurements e.g.
be carried out for the purpose of determining energy and possibly also saving (steam, gas, liquid).
Turbine and vortex flowmeters are mainly used for flow measurements with a wide measuring range. The advantage of these devices is that the measurement signal is directly proportional to the flow, and thus they guarantee a relatively accurate measurement over a fairly large measurement range. In addition to these devices, which are often prone to failure or sensitive to dirt, because of their simple handling, the well-tried, with a measuring orifice or the measuring devices working on this falling pressure difference are still used very often.
One of the biggest shortcomings of these classic orifice plate-based flowmeters, however, is their strongly (in a first approximation, square) curved flow-pressure difference characteristic, which, at least with the pressure transmitters available so far, only allows relatively narrow measuring ranges within which the measurement is sufficiently accurate. A flow change of 1:10 in such a device results in a change in the differential pressure of 1: 100, which is difficult for most pressure transmitters to cope with and leads to high measurement errors, particularly in the direction of low pressure differences.
On the other hand, flowmeters based on pinhole diaphragms have also become known (see e.g. Chemical Engineering, January 14, 1980, pp 97 and 98), which have a linear relationship between the measured variable (pressure difference before and after the orifice plate) and the flow. These devices have an automatically adjustable orifice plate, which consists of a fixed pinhole and an orifice body that is movable relative to it (or vice versa), the orifice body more or less opening the orifice, depending on its relative position, and thus regulating its active flow cross-section.
The movable part is connected to a bellows in such a way that the flow cross-section increases with increasing flow. A suitable design of the perforated diaphragm and the diaphragm body and the corresponding adjustment of the bellows ensure that a linear characteristic curve results overall.
Although these known flowmeters have a considerably wider measuring range than the classic devices with a fixed orifice due to their linear characteristic, they nevertheless have numerous other disadvantages. So they lead e.g. with larger flows to relatively high pressure drops and thus undesirable energy losses. In addition, these devices are mechanically delicate and susceptible to contamination, particularly in the area of the bellows, since this can very easily change their characteristics and thus the characteristic curve of the entire device.
The invention is now intended to improve a flow measuring device of the type defined at the outset in such a way that, while avoiding the lack of comparable known devices, it ensures sufficient accuracy over a wider measuring range and at the same time allows the pressure drop in the measuring orifice to be freely selected or optimized.
The flow measuring device according to the invention which meets these requirements is described in patent claim I. Preferred embodiments and further developments result from the dependent claims.
The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to the drawing. Show it:
1 is a schematic diagram of a first embodiment of a device according to the invention,
2 is a schematic diagram of a second game Ausführungsbei,
3 shows a particularly expedient embodiment of a diaphragm body required in the device in an oblique view and
Figs. 4 and 5 two sections through this diaphragm body along lines IV-IV and V-V of FIG. 3.
The flow according to the invention shown in FIG. 1
Measuring device comprises a line section I with a variable measuring orifice located therein, consisting of a fixed orifice element 2 and a movable orifice body 3, a pressure difference transmitter 4 connected via lines 11 and 12 before and after the measuring orifice to the line section 1, and a controller 5 and an adjusting device 6 existing control system and an evaluation device 7.
The operation of the device is explained below. At this point, it should only be mentioned that the control system 5, 6 the pressure drop Ap, which the medium to be measured experiences when flowing through the measuring orifice 2,3, by adjusting the orifice body 3 relative to the orifice element 2 and thus changing the flow cross-section of the orifice accordingly regulates costly, suitably preselected and set target value Apsoii. The position z of the orifice body 3, which corresponds to the current flow cross section, is then a measure of the flow and is processed accordingly by the evaluation device 7.
The variant of the flow measuring device according to the invention shown in FIG. 2 essentially corresponds in the mechanical part to the variant according to FIG. 1. However, it additionally contains a pressure transmitter 8 for the pressure pl prevailing in front of the measuring orifice 2, 3 and a sensor 9 for the temperature T1 of the flowing medium.
Furthermore, the evaluation device and the controller are implemented by a process computer 10.
The general mode of operation is in principle similar to that of the variant according to FIG. 1. The process computer 10 regulates the pressure drop #p in the flowing medium to a value within a preselected target range Apmax via the adjusting device 6 and the variable measuring orifice 2,3. Apmin. This target range depends on the measuring medium and the pressure difference transmitter used.
In order to avoid energy losses, it should be as low as possible and, on the other hand, should fall within the optimum accuracy range of the transmitter used for precision reasons. From the actually measured pressure difference Ap, the pressure pl, possibly the temperature T1, the instantaneous position z of the orifice body 3 corresponding to the instantaneous flow cross section of the measuring orifice and some system parameters, the process computer 10 then calculates the instantaneous flow rate qm (t) according to the relationship given below. .
In principle, the variable measuring aperture 2, 3 can be arbitrary, for example approximately as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, be formed. A particularly useful form is shown in Figs. 3-5 shown. The diaphragm body 3 has an essentially cylindrical shape and fits exactly into the correspondingly circular diaphragm opening 21 of the fixed diaphragm element 2. The outer shape of the diaphragm body 3 is of secondary importance - it could also be prismatic, for example - as long as only the diaphragm opening 21 is adapted accordingly. On its front side facing the aperture 21, the aperture body 3 is provided with a wedge-shaped recess 33 delimited by two flat surfaces 31 and 32, into which a likewise wedge-shaped deflection element 34 is inserted.
The wedge edge 35 of the deflecting member 34 is directed perpendicular to the wedge edge of the recess 33 defined by the cutting line 36 of the two surfaces 31 and 32. The deflection member 34, as its name suggests, serves to deflect the medium flowing through the aperture opening 21 and the recess 33 and thereby prevents undesired deposits in the area of the wedge cutting edge 36, which could form if it were not present. It also results in better flow conditions in the orifice.
It is easy to see that the orifice body 3, together with the fixed orifice element 2, defines or releases a variable flow cross-section for the flowing medium, which depends on its relative position to the orifice element. The flow cross-section is the largest and corresponds to the area of the orifice opening 21 when the orifice body 3 is completely removed from the orifice opening 21 (on the right in FIGS. 1 and 2). Conversely, the flow cross-section is minimal or zero when the orifice body 3 is inserted into the orifice element 2 at least to the extent (to the left in FIG. 1) that the orifice opening 21 comes to lie behind the wedge cutting edge 36.
Figures 4 and 5 show a middle position. The relationship f (z) between the flow cross-section and the relative position of the orifice body is square.
The actuating device 6 for displacing the diaphragm body 3 can be designed as desired. For example, a pneumatic drive or an electric stepper or synchronous motor with a spindle drive is suitable. The stroke, that is to say the relative position z of the diaphragm body 3, can be measured via an additional measuring device in the actuating device 6 and reported to the process computer 10 via a feedback line 61 (FIG. 2). If the relationship between the control signal z * of the controller 5 and the actual relative position z of the diaphragm body 3 can be specified with sufficient accuracy, the control signal z * itself can be used as a measure of the relative position (FIG. 1).
The physical process when flowing through the variable orifice plate can be described as a non-isothermal relaxation (isenthalpic or adiabatic throttling effect, see e.g.
Chemical Engineering, Volume 1, J.M. Coulson and J.F. Richardson, Pergamon Press, Oxford 1977). For incompressible media and for Ao: A1 1 applies to the weight-related flow rate qm:
EMI2.1
Ad is the flow cross-section of the orifice plate, A1 the free cross-section of the line section, Ao: A1 the so-called opening ratio, CD a coefficient dependent on the opening ratio and the Reynolds number and # the density of the measuring medium in front of the measuring orifice.
For compressible media, if the known relationship p.Vx = constant is valid, the relationship:
EMI2.2
or for ideal gases:
EMI2.3
Therein, p2 and pl are the media thickness after or in front of the orifice plate, and T1 the temperature of the measurement medium, M its mean molar weight, R the general gas constant, and x the so-called isentropic exponent of the medium. For strongly non-ideal gases and for vapors, the density Qi of the medium must be taken from an i, s table.
The coefficient CD is practically constant for large Reynolds numbers (in the free aperture cross-section) Red to 105 and small aperture ratios Ao: A1 1 (# 0.61). The product Ao-CD can therefore be regarded as a calibration factor under these practical flow conditions and is referred to below as k.
For large Reynolds numbers, the flow rate qm is proportional to the calibration factor k and thus also to the flow cross-section Ao. If the pressure drop Ap is kept constant by appropriate control of the flow cross-section, the flow cross-section Ao and thus the calibration factor k can be regarded as a direct measure of the flow qm (with constant pressure pl and constant temperature T1 and thus constant density # 1 of the medium) (Variant according to Fig. 1).
On the other hand, the effective flow rate qrn can also be calculated for any aperture with relation (1) or (2) or (3). It should be noted, however, that the pressure difference measurement required for this can be associated with large errors, especially for very small values.
For this reason (see design variant according to FIG. 2) the pressure difference is adjusted accordingly by adjusting the measuring orifice in a suitably chosen, narrow range Apmax-Apmin. kept constant so that the measurement error is largely reduced.
In any case, however, the flow rate qm is directly proportional to the flow cross section Ao and thus directly dependent on the position z of the orifice body 3 relative to the orifice element 2. The relative position z of the bladed body 3 can therefore be used as a measurement for the flow rate qm.
The characteristic curve of the measuring device, that is to say the relationship between the flow rate qm and the measurement variable z, results directly from the characteristic curve of the variable measuring orifice itself, that is to say from the relationship between the flow cross section Ao and the relative position z of the orifice body 3. By suitable shaping of the orifice body 3 and aperture 21 can, for example an exponential dependency of the form Ao (z) = a ehz with a and b as constants can be achieved. Such a characteristic curve would result in a constant measuring accuracy (constant relative measuring error) over the entire possible measuring range.
For smaller measuring ranges or with limited accuracy requirements, a quadratic characteristic curve of the form Ao (z) = bz2 with b as a constant can be used. Such a quadratic characteristic is e.g.
realized by the diaphragm body shown in Figures 3-5 and has the advantage that relatively simple diaphragm body shapes can be used for their implementation. The relative measurement accuracy with a quadratic characteristic is inversely proportional to the root of the flow, the change over the entire measuring range is still significantly less than with a linear characteristic of the known flowmeters.
The flow measuring device according to the invention can in principle be used in two different operating modes. These are - operation with differential pressure control (variant according to FIG. 1) and - operation with gradual adjustment of the orifice opening (variant according to FIG. 2).
(Of course, the more complex and complete embodiment according to FIG. 2 can also be operated according to the variant according to FIG. 1.)
In both operating modes, the following variables must be known for the flow measurement, i.e. are specified or preset or programmed as parameters: - characteristic curve of the calibration factor k = Ao-CD of the flow measuring device as a function f (z) of the relative position z of the orifice body - density # 1 of the medium to be measured (or mole weight M for ideal gases) - iso-entropic exponent X (for gases).
When operating with differential pressure control, as already mentioned, the calibration factor k with constant pressure difference Ap can be regarded as a direct measure of the flow.
This operating mode is particularly suitable for incompressible media, where the flow can be calculated according to relationship (1). However, since this relationship is a good approximation of relationships (2) and (3), gases and vapors can also be measured with this mode of operation with sufficient accuracy for many cases. In any case, the relative pressure drop #p: p across the orifice should be small (0.5). The practical implementation of this operating mode is relatively simple and is shown, for example, in FIG. 1.
When operating with step-by-step adjustment of the aperture, the flows of gases and damps can also be measured with the greatest accuracy. In this mode of operation, pressure pi, temperature T1, differential pressure Ap and orifice position z are measured continuously (periodically) and the instantaneous flow rate qm (t) is calculated periodically therefrom in accordance with the relationship (1), (2) or (3).
A measurement cycle can be structured as follows: - Measured value acquisition pl, Ap, T1, z - Calculation of p2 ausplundAp - Calculation of k from z according to characteristic k (z) = f (z) - Calculation of qm (t) according to one of the relationships (1 ) - (3) - Check whether the differential pressure is within the desired Apmox-Apmin range, otherwise step-by-step adjustment of the diaphragm body position using the setting device so that Ap falls within the desired range.
- New data acquisition, etc.
If the measured variables pl and T1 do not change over time, they can also be entered as constant values in the device or
the program of the process computer can be entered, whereby a certain simplification can be achieved.
The operating mode with step-by-step adjustment of the flow cross-section is particularly suitable for precise measurements, where the temperature and the absolute pressure of the measuring medium must also be taken into account. In addition, the operating mode can also be used in cases in which rapid dynamic flow changes are to be expected. In contrast to operation with pressure difference control, there can be no control fluctuations that negatively affect the accuracy and dynamics of the measurements. In addition, the current flow rate qm (t) is determined with great accuracy even if the pressure difference Ap is outside the given limits (e.g. with extremely small flow rates).
The calibration factor k of the flow measuring device as a function of the orifice position z can in principle be calculated approximately with CD 0.61. However, calibration is recommended for more precise measurements. Such can e.g. for incompressible media with water and for gases or vapors with air or nitrogen, of course using the relationship (1), (2) or (3) which is then also used in the measuring mode. The sizes T1, p1, #p, qm should be measured with the appropriate accuracy using special calibration instruments.
When calibrating the orifice, make sure that these calibration measurements are carried out in the same Reynolds numerical range as possible, as with the actual flow measurement.
