The invention relates to new nematic compounds with negative DK anisotropy. which are suitable as components for liquid crystal (LC) mixtures. The invention also relates to nematic LC mixtures which contain the new compounds as components and which have an overall negative DK anisotropy.
For the operation of certain displays, e.g. B. for the so-called guest / host displays (GHD) and the homotropic nematic displays (HND) with positive image display or positive contrast, nematic liquid crystal mixtures with negative DK anisotropy (DKA) are required. It is known that the DKA, also known as Ae, is defined by Ae = F-E, in which E means the dielectric constant (DK) parallel and el the DK perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the molecule.
For a negative DKA, the contribution from Ex, also called transverse polarization, must exceed the contribution from E, l (longitudinal polarization).
Most of the known nematic substances with negative DKA are now compounds with two, three or four cyclic groups, usually 1, 4-phenylene groups, which are connected to one another by bridge members, e.g. B. by carboxyl groups and / or covalent bonds [see z. B. Dubois, J.C. et al, Mol.
Cryst. Liq. Cryst. 42 (1977) 139: DE-OS Nos. 2240864, 2613293, 2 835 662, 2 937 700, SU-PS 562 547 and EP Patent Application No.
80200464.8]. It is also known to replace one or two 1,4-phenylene radicals with 1,4-trans-cyclohexyl radicals.
In order to enlarge the molecule of si, d. H. transverse to the longitudinal axis of the molecule to be significantly polarized, substituents having a polarizing effect, such as halogen atoms or the cyano (nitrile) group, are used generally, i.e. laterally, ie. H. in 2 or / and 3 position, arranged on at least one of the phenylene radicals.
In order to eliminate the relatively high viscosity contributions of the carboxyl groups serving as bridge members, it is also known from EP application no. 82300656.4 (publication no. 0058512) to add an additive in liquid crystal mixtures intended for rotary cells with multiplex operation To use the form of particularly low-viscosity binuclear compounds with low DKA: these compounds have the formula
EMI1.5
wherein A and B each represent a cyclic, aliphatic or aromatic radical, which as a wing group is a non-cyclic radical Ra, Rb, z.
B. has an alkyl group and, if desired, additionally carries a cross-polarizing substituent, such as a cyano group or a halogen atom in the m-position to the wing group located on the same ring. Since this known mixture should not have a negative DKA overall and the low-viscosity dinuclear compound itself should have a small DKA, preferably no or at most a weakly cross-polarizing group, namely fluorine, is preferred.
The suitability of the bridge group CH2CH2 for nematic compounds with clearly negative DKA was therefore not suggested by EP application 82300656.4.
Furthermore, also in connection with multiplexing, it has been proposed to reduce the tendency to form smectic phases in weakly polarized anisotropic compounds by using compounds of the formula
EMI1.6
be used. in which both rings Ar are aromatic nuclei, at least one of which is a laterally polarizing group, such as typically the methyl group. wearing. The CH2CH2 bridge is not mandatory. because m can be zero or l.
The wing groups Ra. Rb can be linear and / or cyclic groups; insofar as these connections are binuclear, m is in each case zero, i. H. the CH2CH2 bridge is missing at all.
Again, the suitability of the CH2CH2 bridge for the purposes of the present invention is nematic connections with clearly negative DKA. not suggested by this.
Finally, dicyano compounds are also of the type
EMI2.1
described as such; the two cyano groups on the practically terminal phenylene ring lead to an unbalanced top-heavy structure, which can be disadvantageous for compounds with negative DKA or require a relatively complex synthesis.
In any case, no satisfactory nematic LC mixtures are available with the previously known compounds, which have a sufficiently strong negative DKA (eg 2 or better) in combination with the further properties of LC mixtures necessary for the correct operation of display cells. such as general chemical, photochemical, electrochemical and thermal stability, and a sufficiently wide anisotropy range from typically -30 C to +70 C as well as sufficiently short response times even at low temperatures, e.g. B. offer at most about a second at the lower end of the anisotropy range.
The object of the invention is therefore to provide new nematic compounds which enable the production of LC mixtures with clearly negative DKA and the other properties mentioned.
This object is achieved by the compounds of the formula (1) according to the invention
EMI2.2
solved, the symbols m, r, Rl, R2, X, Y and Z have the meaning given in claim 1. the cyclohexyl rings are each in the trans configuration, as indicated by dots.
The compounds excluded by the disclaimer have already been disclosed by EP 0084194 and EP 0107116.
If r = 1, the bridge member Z then present can be a simple covalent bond, a further CHCH group (preferred) or an OCH2 group.
Rl and R2 are the same or different wing groups selected from Cl Cl2-alkyl and Cl Cl2-alkoxy groups with a straight or branched and optionally chial chain of the alkyl part, such as. B. methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, pentyl, hexyl, heptyl, octyl, nonyl, decyl, undecyl or dodecyl as the alkyl part including the corresponding chiral isomeric alkyl parts, such as 1-methylpropyl, 1-methylbutyl, 2-methylbutyl, 1-methylpentyl . 2-methylpentyl, 3-methylpentyl, 1- or 2- or 3- or 4-methylhexyl, 1- or 2- or 3- or 4- or 5-methylheptyl as well as further alkyl alkyl groups with an asymmetric carbon atom formed according to this principle.
Alkyl parts with 2-8 C atoms, especially 3-8 C atoms, are often preferred.
The new compounds (1) can be prepared by various methods. A first general method is based on the condensation of a corresponding carboxylic acid derivative of the formula A-CH2COOH, preferably in the form of the corresponding acid halide, in which A is the left-hand molecular part of the compound (1) d. H.

Example 1 (a) Preparation of trans-4-pentylcyclohexylacetic acid chloride trans-4-pentylcyclohexylacetic acid (12.0 g (0.0566 mol) was converted to the acid chloride on an oil bath at 80 ° C. with thionyl chloride (50 ml) for about 1 hour. The solution obtained was evaporated under reduced pressure, treated with absolute toluene (50 ml) and again evaporated under reduced pressure.
(b) Preparation of 2-fluoro-4-methoxy-a- (trans-4-pentylcyclohexyl) acetopheno'n
The acid chloride obtained according to paragraph (a) was taken up in absolute dichloromethane (50 ml) without further purification and under practically anhydrous conditions to a solution of 3-fluoroanisole (7.1 g, 0.0566 mol) aluminum chloride (8.3 g, 0, 0623 mol) and absolute dichloromethane (100 ml) were added dropwise. The resulting mixture was stirred for 12 hours and then poured onto ice water containing 50 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid. The organic phase was separated and the aqueous phase was extracted with dichloromethane (2 x 100 ml). The combined organic phases were subsequently washed with water, sodium bicarbonate and water and dried over magnesium sulfate.
The crude product obtained after evaporating the dichloromethane under reduced pressure was purified by recrystallization from hexane at 0 ° C. This gave 11.5 g (64% yield) of pure 2-fluoro-4-methoxy-a- (trans-4 pentylcyclohexyl) acetophenone, F 71 to 72 C.
(c) Preparation of 2-2- (trans-4-pentylcyclohexyl) -1- (2-fluoro-4-methoxyphenyl) ethane

The reaction solution was then cooled and then treated with hydrous ether, water and concentrated hydrochloric acid. The aqueous phase was separated off and extracted twice more with ether (2x 100 ml). The combined organic phases were subsequently washed with water, sodium bicarbonate and water, dried over magnesium sulfate and then concentrated. The raw product was in the Kugelrohr at 150 C / ca. 4x 10-2 Torr distilled. This product (9.0 g, 94% yield) can be used for the following reaction without further purification.
(d) Preparation of 3-fluoro-4- [2- (trans-4-pentylcyclohexyl) -1-ethyl] phenol
A solution of the 2- (trans-4 pentylcyclohexyl) -1- (2-fluoro-4-methoxyphenyl) ethane (9.0 g, 0.0294 mol) obtained according to paragraph (c) in absolute dichloromethane (100 ml) was added dropwise added to a solution of boron tribromide (11.0 g, 0.0441 mol) and absolute dichloromethane (100 ml) under practically anhydrous conditions at 0 ° C. The resulting mixture was stirred for 1 hour and then poured onto ice water.
The organic phase was separated off and the aqueous phase was subsequently extracted with dichloromethane (2 × 50 ml). The combined organic phases were washed with water and dried over magnesium sulfate. The crude product obtained after evaporation was recrystallized from hexane at 0 C. 8.5 g (98% yield) of pure target product were obtained, K 64-N 108-1.
(e) Preparation of 1- [2- (trans-4-pentylcyclohexyl) -1-ethyl] -4 (trans-4-propylcyclohexyl) methoxy-2-fluorobenzene
A mixture of the 3-fluoro 4- [2- (trans-4-pentylcyclohexyl) -1-ethyl] phenol (2, 0 g, 0.00068 mol) obtained according to paragraph (d), (trans-4-propylcyclohexyl) Methyl bromide (2.0 g, 0, 00089 mol), anhydrous potassium carbonate (3.8 g, 0, 0274 mol) and absolute dimethylformamide (100 ml) were heated under reflux for 24 h.
The reaction mixture was worked up as in paragraph (d).
The crude product was purified by column chromatography on silica gel with toluene as the eluent. After evaporation of the toluene, the product was recrystallized several times from ethanol until the phase transition temperatures were constant; the corresponding values are as follows: K 61.5-N 110-1.
