a) mélange intimement une substance gélifiante avec du plâtre et de l'eau;
b) chauffe ledit mélange à une température de 70 à 80 C;
c) refroidit ensuite le mélange à 60 C;
Foods , Forster Verlag AG, 1980). A titre préférentiel, on utilise le carrageenane (voir The Merck Index , sect. 1861, 9e éd., 1976), ou l'agar-agar (itkrn, sect. 172).

The present invention relates to a gelled support element for a continuous diffusion device, a device intended to diffuse vapors of sanitizing agents into ambient air or into a closed enclosure. Nowadays, such devices find wide use, both for domestic use in residential or sanitary premises and for use in larger premises such as closed premises intended for shows, restaurants or public meeting places. Their primary function consists in diffusing vapors of active substances with perfuming or antimicrobial action. Among the devices known to date, many are those which use the principle of gel as a support element.
Although widely used, in particular because of their ease of manufacture and the certain improvement which they present compared to other known systems, for example compared to aerosol or wick systems, such devices do not yet give full satisfaction. We can indeed notice that they present for the most part phenomena of exudation. On the other hand, once the diffusion of the water present and of the volatile substances is complete, they leave a dry residue of unsightly appearance. In addition, the gel devices exhibit good diffusion of the sanitizing vapors for a limited time, which in most cases oscillates between 10 and 15 d, after which the diffusion decreases very rapidly. This phenomenon is due to modifications of the diffusion surface which tends to clog, ooze and resinify.
The present invention aims to remedy these drawbacks. It aims in particular to allow the realization of a system of diffusion of vapors assai
characteristics having an extended duration of action, regularity of distribution throughout the duration of the service, a low cost price and the possibility of varied and aesthetically pleasing shaping.
The present invention provides a gelled support element intended to be incorporated into a device for the continuous diffusion of sanitizing vapors, which element is characterized in that it comprises, in mixture with a gelling substance, a coingredient consisting of a mineral substance or a vegetable or polymeric fibrous product.
Of course, such a substance or product must be chemically and physically inert vis-à-vis the sanitizing substance.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, plaster is used as the mineral substance. The use of this material as a perfume carrier had been advocated for some time already (see F. Winter, Handbuch der gesamten Parfümerie und Kosmetik, Springer Verlag, Vienna 1952, p. 288). More recently, there has been a revival of interest in this type of technology, thanks in particular to the use of new techniques for the manufacture of scented objects comprising a gypsum support (see, for example, US Patent No. 3,953,378 ), and several deodorant articles thus manufactured are currently marketed.
The particular combination which consists of a mixture of plaster and gel has not been suggested to date for the production of fresheners.
Such a mixture allows the manufacture of a support having the advantages mentioned above and in which the passage of the active sanitizing substance takes place by slow and regular diffusion through the alveoli of the gel-gypsum mass up to the interface. supportair, where there is its desorption followed by its evaporation in the surrounding environment. The presence of plaster in a gelling mixture allows the production of a support which, after solidification, has more or less regular cells or interstices in which the gelled substance comes to be enclosed.
The perfuming of such objects is easily carried out by a process which comprises the addition, with stirring, of a perfuming composition and an emulsifier to a semi-solid mass formed by an aqueous suspension of plaster and gelling agent. This operation is followed by molding and cooling in order to obtain articles in various pleasant shapes. The process of internal diffusion, desorption and evaporation of the volatile parts of the active sanitizing substance, represents in itself a phenomenon which makes it possible to better control the rate of diffusion of the sanitizing vapors. An element is thus obtained which can exert a regular perfuming or antimicrobial action, clearly more prolonged than that observed by the use of devices with a single gel.
It has also been found that the elements according to the invention exert a more uniform scenting than that obtained using plaster articles alone. The diffusion rate of sanitizing vapors in the surrounding environment of the present element is in fact higher than that observed in plaster devices only.
Such a diffusion process is logically accompanied by a regular reduction in the gypsum-gel mass of the support. This phenomenon therefore results in a reduction of the support. Such a capture, however, does not cause any drawback insofar as the external surface of the support remains at all times during the action, easily permeable to the active volatile substances.
By choosing a mixture in appropriate respective proportions of the various constituents, it is possible to obtain a reduction in the volume of the support without causing it to crumble. By retaining its original outline, the support thus remains aesthetically attractive at the end of its action, which represents a significant advantage for this kind of article.
It is also possible to use as mineral substance, in addition to plaster, calcium carbonate or a mixture of calcium carbonate and an aluminum silicate, for example white cement.
We were able to establish that the plaster could be suitably
replaced by a vegetable or polymeric fibrous product. As a vegetable fibrous product, we can mention sawdust.
The invention also relates to a process for the preparation of a gelled element intended to be incorporated into a device as defined above, which process is characterized in that
a) intimately mixing a gelling substance with plaster and water;
b) heating said mixture to a temperature of 70 to 80 C;
c) then cools the mixture to 60 C;
d) add to it a mixture consisting of a perfuming composition and an emulsifier and, after stirring,
e) pour everything into molds.
The temperature values indicated above are not to be interpreted in an absolute manner, but have a preferential character.
As a gelling substance, it is possible to use the usual gelling agents used both in cosmetics and galenics as in the food industry (see for example: Gelling and Thickening Agents in
Foods, Forster Verlag AG, 1980). Preferably, we use the carrageenan (see The Merck Index, sect. 1861, 9th ed., 1976), or the agar-agar (itkrn, sect. 172).
The method of perfuming the elements according to the invention comprises the addition of a perfuming composition to a misolid mass containing water. Therefore, the active fragrance composition is added as a mixture with an emulsifying agent. Usual emulsifiers such as ethoxylated castor oils (Cremophor, BASF), ethoxylated nonylphenol (Arkopal1, Hochet) or esters of ethoxylated sorbitol (Tween, ICI) are perfectly suitable for this effect.
Although it can vary within a fairly wide range of values, the proportions of the various ingredients used in the manufacture of the elements of the invention are preferably within the following weight limits (parts by weight%):
Gelling substance 2-4
Mineral substance or fibrous product 10-30
Water 85.9-55
0.1-1 emulsifier
Sanitizing substance 2-10
According to a preferred embodiment, when plaster is used as a mineral substance, a concentration thereof of about 15% and a proportion of gelling substance of about -3% is used. The resulting supports are in the form of a solid which, at the end of the sanitizing action, comprises a volume equal to approximately half of the original volume.
It is understood that such a reduction will be less when the quantities of plaster used are greater, a small reduction having been observed by the use of concentrations of 70% and more.
One of the advantages of the support element according to the invention is that of being able to be shaped into the desired shape and of being able to keep it, or at least its outline, throughout the period of use. This characteristic makes the device particularly advantageous because, for such objects, it is recognized that the consumer attaches great importance not only to the functional aspect, but also to the aesthetic aspect, especially when such devices are intended for living rooms.
The following example serves to illustrate the invention which, of course, cannot be limited only to the embodiments described.
Example:
Process for the preparation of a plaster-gel support for air freshener and ambient air

From the examination of the tests carried out,
we can notice that the times of diffusion - and therefore of fragrance action - of the elements comprising a plaster-gel support are approximately 1 l / 2-2 times greater than those of similar elements made using traditional supports alone. gel.
Compared with elements comprising a plaster support only, the test elements showed the advantage of scenting the surrounding air more markedly during the first two weeks of action.
