Description
The invention relates to a method for producing and providing ultrapure water, in which raw water is deionized and then filtered to remove organic impurities, and an apparatus for carrying out the method.
One of the most important problems in the electrical industry, in the pharmaceutical industry and in the chemical industry is the filtration of high-purity water containing bacteria and pyrogens, which was previously only possible with discontinuous cartridge disposable filters. The mixed-bed filter has emerged as a contamination source for bacteria from investigations in process sequences of conventional systems that are equipped with a mixed-bed filter, ultraviolet sterilization and disposable cartridge filters with a pore size of 0.1 to 0.2 μm , especially proven for yeast and mushroom mycelia. In the case of samples taken from the cartridge filter candles, no infection by yeast and fungal mycelium could be detected, which means that the cartridge filter candles are not able to retain infection germs during the filtration. Another disadvantage of the known plants for the production of ultrapure water is that the water quality is subject to strong fluctuations, which subsequently affects the products treated with the water.
The invention is therefore based on the object of providing a method and a device for producing and providing ultrapure water which permit extensive removal of bacteria and pyrogens from the ultrapure water and largely reduce the undesirable fluctuations in the quality of the ultrapure water.
This object is achieved by continuously filtering the deionized water and circulating the filtrate in a ring stream and returning it to the filter,
wobei aus dem Ringstrom das jeweils benötigte Reinstwasser entnommen wird, und dass als Filter ein Membran-Ultra-Filter verwendet wird, dessen Filterrückstand kontinuierlich als Konzentrat abgezogen wird und das von Zeit zu Zeit einer Reinigung unterworfen wird. wherein the ultrapure water required in each case is taken from the ring stream, and that a membrane ultra filter is used as the filter, the filter residue of which is continuously removed as a concentrate and which is subjected to cleaning from time to time.
According to the invention, the filtration of ultrapure water is thus achieved by adding an ultrafiltration membrane of the desired pore size to the ion exchanger system, which is preferably designed as a mixed bed system (police mixed bed), and combining the ultrafiltration membrane with a cleaning unit, in particular a disinfection unit. The pore size is advantageously approximately 0.001 to 0.002 (im, a pore size of approximately 0.0015 [im (15 Â) being preferred.

A significant difference to the known ultrapure water treatment with disposable cartridge filters in the method according to the invention is that the ultrafilter is continuously flowed through regardless of the actual consumption of ultrapure water and the unused ultrapure water is returned in a ring flow and passed through the ultrafilter again. This means that the system is constantly flowed through, which reduces the risk of bacterial nests forming, which then suddenly tear away and lead to a drastic increase in the number of bacteria in the water. This is the case with discontinuously operating systems with cartridge filters, because the water is only filtered there when ultra-pure water is actually used. Bacteria can form much more easily in stagnant water than in moving water, which is continuously filtered. In addition, as described below, the pore size of the ultrafiltration membrane (spiral module) can be adjusted so that not only bacteria, but also the much smaller pyrogens are retained, which leads to a further improvement in water quality.
The membranes used are preferably made from cellulose acetate and in particular from polysulfone. Ultrafilters are generally known. Their membrane structure is asymmetrical. The very thin active membrane layer (0.25 .mu.m thick), which is decisive for the separation, sits on a highly porous supporting structure that hardly influences the mass transfer. The membrane is usually wrapped together with a polyester support layer around a PVC central pipe (filtrate collecting pipe) and tightly glued at the edges. The rolled-up membrane package is arranged in a pressure tube. The pressurized solution is fed in from the side, distributed in a fluidically favorable manner on the membrane surface in the spacer fabric and discharged as a concentrate on the opposite side. The filtrate or permeate penetrating the membrane flows through the supporting fabric of the membrane to the center of the membrane element and emerges from the permeate tube. An ultrafilter generally consists of a large number of such spiral modules, which are connected both in parallel and in series. As the concentrate flow in the direction of flow is constantly decreasing, the number of modules connected in parallel in the direction of flow is also getting smaller.
Since the procedure of the mixed-bed filter or mixed-bed ion exchanger and UV disinfection is known, it is not discussed in more detail here. Preferably, two mixed bed filters are connected in series so that one filter can be regenerated without the water treatment having to be interrupted. Furthermore, you can do without UV disinfection when using an ultrafiltration system.
The retention capacity of organic substances through ultrafiltration membranes is shown below, whose pore diameter is approximately 15 Â. The pore diameter is subject to certain fluctuations, but can be kept at 95% with good membranes at the desired value.

The retention capacity or separation performance of the membrane can be assumed to be almost 100% with a separation limit corresponding to a molecular weight of at least 1,000. Therefore a pore diameter of approx. 15 Â is preferred. The operating pressure with which the water is pumped into the ultrafilter is generally around 3 to 10 bar, preferably around 3.5 to 8 bar.
Since the concentrate constantly flows over the membrane surface and thus cleans it, operation can be carried out undisturbed for a long time. Deposits of bacteria and pyrogens on the membrane surface cannot be completely avoided, however, which can result in bacteria growing through the membrane. It is therefore advisable to rinse or disinfect the ultrafiltration membrane after a certain operating time. The disinfection intervals are based on the purity criteria of the downstream manufacturing processes for which the ultrapure water is required. The disinfection intervals after which disinfection takes place are normally one month or more.
Solutions of heavy metal salts, in particular copper and silver salts, are particularly suitable for cleaning the ultrafiltration membrane, with silver nitrate being preferred. It was found that silver nitrate has a good activity against yeast and fungal attack, even in low concentrations. Silver nitrate needs a longer exposure time than various other disinfectants. However, the heavy metals, in particular the silver, have the advantage that they can be easily recovered and, due to the good analytical traceability of the metals, it can also be ensured that after the disinfection has been completed by rinsing, the entire heavy metal is also removed from the filter .
To carry out the method according to the invention, at least two ultrafilters connected in parallel are preferably provided, which can be switched off individually from the ring stream for cleaning. For cleaning, the ultrafilters are preferably flowed through with the cleaning solution in the direction of the ring flow, any bacteria that may have been set being killed and the pores of the membrane are flushed out. Concentrate and filtrate are combined during cleaning and circulated through the ultrafilter. The cleaning time when using a silver nitrate solution as a cleaning and disinfectant is usually 50 to 180 minutes, but it can be individually adjusted to the respective requirements. A silver nitrate concentration of 0.1 to 1 mg / l in the cleaning solution has proven to be advantageous. The stability of the cleaning solution can be increased by containing about 0.001% nitric acid. After cleaning or disinfection has ended, the cleaning stream is advantageously passed through an exchange resin until all silver nitrate has been removed from the solution. The ultrafilter can then be flushed out of the ring stream with clean water and put back into operation. The silver collected by the exchange resin can then be regenerated again without difficulty. A chloride-free resin with nuclear power quality, as is commercially available, is preferably used as the exchange resin in order to avoid contamination of the rinsing solutions with chloride ions.
According to the invention, the ultrapure water treatment system has an ultrapure water storage container which is arranged upstream of the ion exchanger, viewed in the flow of the ring. The ultrapure water which is recycled and not used in the ring flow preferably flows into this ultrapure water reservoir. As a rule, the amount of water passing through the ultrafilter as the filtrate and the amount of water required by the individual consumers are matched to one another in such a way that at least still

25%, preferably 40%, the filtrate is returned in the ring stream. The ring current is maintained during idle times when there is no water consumption. Since the concentrate then contains practically no impurities, the concentrate can also be returned and combined with the returned filtrate. If ultrapure water is used, then a large part of the used water, which is only slightly contaminated, can also be returned, which is preferably done by introducing it into the ultrapure water storage tank. In these cases, the concentrate contains organic impurities, so that it is usually sent to the wastewater. However, due to the high purity and salt-free nature of the water fed to the ultrafilter, the normal amount of concentrate is extremely small and is usually at or below 1% of the amount of water fed into the ultrafilter.
In this way, according to the method according to the invention, up to 60% of the amount of water introduced into the ultrafilter can be recycled. 30% of the amount of water can be used as water of second quality for other purposes, whereas only about 10% of the amount of water is so heavily polluted by consumers or as a concentrate that it is discarded as waste water. This means that the method according to the invention is extremely economical to carry out. Therefore, the economic viability of the process begins at low throughputs of 500 to 10001 per hour. As a rule, however, the system is designed for a normal output of 15 to 100 m3 per hour. Furthermore, the quality requirement can be increased by the method according to the invention from previously 10 germs per ml to three germs or less per ml.
Further advantages and details emerge from the following examples, in which the method according to the invention and the device according to the invention are explained in more detail.
Beispiel 1 Porengrösse der Membran: 15 Ä Desinfektionsmittel: AgNCb mit HNCb stabilisiert Example 1 Pore size of the membrane: 15 Å disinfectant: AgNCb stabilized with HNCb
Desinfektionszeit: 75 Minuten Disinfection time: 75 minutes
Einwirkungstemperatur: 15°C Konzentration AgNCb: 0,85 mg/1 Exposure temperature: 15 ° C AgNCb concentration: 0.85 mg / 1
Spülzeit: 180 Minuten Rinse time: 180 minutes
The cleaning or disinfection process is then completed by rinsing with bacteriologically perfect water with the aim of completely removing the disinfection or cleaning solution. The concentration was determined at the exit of the measuring section by continuous sampling using the flameless atmospheric absorption (graphite tube cuvette) or the polarographic examination method. Due to slightly different pressure fluctuations and the resulting fluctuating rinsing time, a safety margin of 45 minutes is expected. A special quality mixed-bed resin is used to absorb and select silver nitrate in high-purity water. It is a chloride-free nuclear power plant design made from a strongly acidic and a strongly basic resin. The fully loaded filters are treated for the reprocessing and recovery of the silver. The mixed bed has a good absorption capacity for low silver nitrate concentrations. In the present case, the absorption capacity is 91 g / 1 resin and the absorption concentration of silver nitrate is 0.85 mg / 1. In the expiry of the exchanger at the start of loading the exchanger with
Silver and silver is not detectable in the process at the end of loading.
This results in considerable savings in operating costs, since the recovered silver can be used again or sold. Although other disinfectants can also be used, they cannot usually be recovered due to their complex composition. These must then be routed to an appropriate wastewater treatment plant or sewage system. Disinfectants were tested which contain formaldehyde, hydrogen peroxide and / or sorbic acid as basic substances. Silver nitrate is essentially equivalent to these disinfectants in its disinfectant effect, but is preferable because of the possibility of recovery.
After removing the silver, the ultrafiltration system is flushed with the operating current and then put back into operation. Colony count and bacterial count determinations on agar or gelatin-agar culture media (48 h, 20 37 ° C) with eight times magnification of magnifying glass give excellent analysis results. The number of germs in continuous 24-hour operation was consistently below 1 germ per ml for a period of more than 30 days. Only then did the number of germs increase temporarily to 3 25 germs per ml, but then dropped again to 1 germ per ml. It was found that the sterility was better for membranes made of polysulfone than for those made of cellulose acetate.
In addition to the bacterial count determinations, particle tests and Silting Index 30 determinations were carried out in the filtrate of the ultrafiltration system between two disinfection cycles. The average particle number was 4.8 particles per 1 for a determination membrane made of cellulose acetate. The silting index averaged <0.1. The organic and inorganic colloids are determined using this method.
Ultraviolet spectroscopy was also used to determine lignin sulfonic and humic acids. The organic acids are detected by extraction with trioctylamine in chloroform and back extraction in NaOH. With the solution obtained in this way, the concentration of lignin sulfonic acids and substances containing humic acid can be determined via the UV spectra. The determinations showed a concentration of lignosulfonic acids <0.1 mg / ml and a concentration of humic-45 acids of <0.1 mg / ml. In contrast, in conventional ultrapure water treatment plants with the ion exchanger principle, the lignosulfonic acid concentration is 1.4 mg / ml and the humic acid concentration is 1.0 mg / ml.

The increase in the disinfection time in comparison to Example 1 resulted from the use of a lower application concentration of silver nitrate. The rinsing time is designed with sufficient safety margin so that a complete removal of the silver is guaranteed. The selectivity and recovery of the silver nitrate is carried out as described in Example 1. Following the 65 disinfection with silver nitrate, bacterial count determinations were carried out as in Example 1 during 67 days of 24-hour operation. These provisions showed that the bacterial count, with the exception of a short-term increase

Mit Hilfe von Kalkabsorbern wird die Anlage vorzugsweise auch kohlensäurefrei gehalten. hung to 5.5 germs per ml, always remained below 1.5 germs per ml and did not increase even towards the end of continuous operation. It follows from this that the ultrapure water can be largely disinfected over a long period of time using the method according to the invention, and that disinfection and cleaning are only required after long operating times. Particle studies showed a particle number of 6.4 particles per 1 and an average silting index <0.1. The determinations of lignin sulfonic acids and humic acids also gave good values. The initial concentration of lignosulfonic acid was 1.7 mg / ml and that of humic acid 1.6 gm / ml. In contrast, the content of these organic acids remained below 0.1 mg / ml during operation. Organic acids are thus removed by the method according to the invention to more than 90%. The quality requirements imposed on ultrapure water, such as total bacterial count, silting index and particle number, as well as the concentration of organic acids are thus met or far exceeded. The sterility of the treated water 5 can be increased further by “ventilating” tanks, containers and lines which are partially or completely emptied during operation, instead of air, with nitrogen, in particular using sterile filters. The system is preferably also kept carbon-free with the aid of lime absorbers.
In order to prevent metal ions from the containers or lines from getting into the ultrapure water, the lines, containers and fittings are preferably made of plastic or, if they consist of metal, are provided with an inner coating, in particular rubber.
