Bu tylbenzylchlorid in p-tert. Butyl-benzaldehyd überführt.
Butyl-benzylchlorid in p-tert.
Reinheit: 92% (NMR:GC) Ausbeute: 60%.

2. Process for the preparation of p-tert. Butylbenzaldehyde, characterized in that p-tert. Butyltoluene at temperatures of 5-35? C, under the action of high-energy radiation and / or in the presence of radical formers, reacted with chlorine and the p-tert obtained. Bu tylbenzyl chloride in p-tert. Butyl benzaldehyde transferred.
3. The method according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that one carries out the chlorination at temperatures of 15-25 "C.
4. The method according to claim 2 or 3, characterized in that the p-tert. Butyl benzyl chloride is cleaned before further reaction.
5. The method according to claim 2 or 4, characterized in that the p-tert obtained. Butyl benzyl chloride by reaction with hexamethylenetetramine in p-tert. Butyl benzaldehyde transferred.
The present invention relates to a new process for the preparation of p-tert. Butyl benzene derivatives.
The products obtained by the process according to the invention are known substances, in particular with an intermediate character.
The process is characterized in that p-tert. Butyl-toluene at temperatures of 5-350C, under the action of high-energy radiation and / or in the presence of radical formers, with chlorine, and, if appropriate, the p-tert obtained. Butyl benzyl chloride in p-tert. Butyl benzaldehyde transferred.
The process is characterized by high selectivity (proportion of the benzyl derivative in the reaction product) even with high conversion (ratio of converted toluene derivative / starting material used is high).
In the reaction according to the invention, the chlorine is expediently introduced into the starting material in gaseous form, an inert gas, e.g. Nitrogen or argon, etc. can be added.
The chlorination can be carried out either without or in a suitable solvent, the solvents used being inert hydrocarbons, in particular halogenated hydrocarbons, e.g. CCl4 or chlorinated benzenes come into consideration.
The reaction can be carried out either without pressure or under elevated, in particular slightly elevated pressure, and also batchwise or continuously.
The reaction is carried out at 5-35 "C, especially at 15-25" C.
The exothermic reaction is controlled by means of a suitable cooling device, e.g. Water bath or cooling coils, temperature controlled.
The energy required to dissociate the halogen molecules into atoms (radicals) is expediently applied by the action of high-energy radiation. Irradiation with UV light is preferred, for example by means of a medium-pressure or high-pressure mercury lamp. Visible light can also be used for this purpose, provided that it has wavelength components of less than 488 nm. Other possible light sources are: sunlight, incandescent lamps, lasers, etc.
So-called radical formers can also be used. Suitable such radical formers are the organic peroxides, azoisobutyronitrile, etc. customary for side chain chlorination, etc.
The introduction of chlorine and the formation of radicals are expediently coordinated with one another in such a way that all chlorine is absorbed, i.e. no chlorine escapes from the reaction mixture.
The molar ratio of chlorine / converted starting material is 1: 1. With regard to the starting material used, it is advantageous to work with a deficit.
So it is advantageous to stop the reaction before everything p-tert. Butyl toluene is implemented to prevent the formation of disruptive by-products. A turnover of 50-90%, based on p-tert. Butyltoluene is expedient, a conversion of 60-80% is preferred.
The formation of the chloride can be followed by gas chromatography.
The unreacted p-tert. Butyl toluene is expediently removed from the reaction mixture by distillation and used again.
The p-tert obtained. Butyl benzyl chloride is conveniently purified by distillation; in this way it is obtained in a purity of at least 95%.
If necessary, the chloride can also be processed raw.
Its possible implementation to p.-tert. Butylbenzaldehyde can be carried out by methods known per se, for example by reaction with hexamethylenetetramine (Sommelet reaction, see Houben-Weyl, Methods of Organic Chemistry, Volume 7/1, page 194, G. Thieme, Stuttgart, 1954).
The p-tert. Butyl benzyl chloride can also be used for ptert. Butyl alcohol can be hydrolyzed, or used as an alkylating agent, etc.
The (gaseous) hydrochloric acid formed in the reaction according to the invention can e.g. be absorbed by a conventional gas washing system. When water is used as the washing liquid, aqueous hydrochloric acid is formed, which can be used as such.
example
In a round bottom flask equipped with a thermometer, magnetic stirrer, chlorine inlet tube, reflux condenser and an HCl absorption device, which is filled with water, 50 g p-tert. Submitted butyltoluene. In addition to the reaction vessel, a medium-pressure mercury lamp (250 W) is ignited and chlorine is then introduced while stirring. It is cooled by means of a cooling bath so that the temperature does not exceed 30 ° C. After 80% of the p-tert.butyltoluene has been reacted (GC), the reaction is stopped; nitrogen is bubbled through the apparatus and the reaction product is then distilled 9 g of p-tert-butyltoluene are recovered and 35 g of p-tert-butylbenzyl chloride of 95% purity are obtained (NMR / GC) The distillation also gives 4 g of p-tert-butylbenzalchloride, 8 g of p-tert.
Chlorobenzyl benzyl chloride and 5 g of residue.
17 g of hexamethylenetetramine, 9 ml of water, 6 ml of alcohol and 21.5 g of 95% strength p-tert are placed in a three-necked flask equipped with a thermometer, magnetic stirrer and reflux condenser. Given butylbenzaldehyde. The mixture is then slowly warmed to 45 ° C. with stirring. At this temperature, the reaction mixture initially becomes mushy, then thin. An exothermic reaction sets in. The temperature is kept at 45 ° C. with the aid of an ice bath until the reaction has subsided. The mixture is then stirred with renewed warming for 30 minutes at 45 ° C. Now the reflux condenser is against a distilla
tion bridge and 5 ml of alcohol are distilled off from the mixture under a slight vacuum (70 torr).
The distillation bridge is then removed and a water separator is fitted, which allows the separated water to be returned to the reaction flask. The water separator is filled with about 60 ml of water and 10 ml of toluene, and 60 ml of water are added to the reaction mixture. It is heated to 1400C. At the start of steam distillation, the pH is adjusted to 4.5-5 using 60% sulfuric acid. The liquid in the water separator is renewed several times. The organic phases are separated from the distillates and the aqueous portions are shaken out with ether. Ether extracts and organic phases are combined and each with approx.
20 ml of 15% sulfuric acid, water, 10% sodium carbonate solution and finally washed again with water and concentrated. A total of 14.7 g of crude product are obtained, which are fractionated at 17 torr over a 5 cm Widmer column and give 11.8 g of p-tert-butylbenzaldehyde. Purity: 92% (NMR: GC) Yield: 60%.
