PATENTANSPRÜCHE

PATENT CLAIMS
1. A process for the preparation of cobalt-dicyclopentadienyl (cobaltocene) from the corresponding alkali metal or alkaline earth metal cyclopentadienylene and the anhydrous halides of cobalt in organic solvents, characterized in that the reaction is carried out in the presence of acetonitrile.
2. The method according to claim 1, characterized in that the reaction is carried out in the presence of ammonia and / or ammonia.
3. The method according to claim 1, characterized in that the cobaltocene is isolated from the acetonitrile solution by crystallization.
4. Use of cobaltocene, obtained by the process according to claim 1, dissolved in acetonitrile, as a catalyst solution for the preparation of 2-picoline from acetonitrile and acetylene.
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of cobalt-dicyclopentadienyl (cobaltocene), which is used as a catalyst for the preparation of 2-substituted pyridines from nitriles and acetylene.
It is known to cobaltocene from cobalt chloride and sodium cyclopentadienyl with an ether such as e.g. 1, 2-Dimethoxyethane or tetrahydrofuran, as a solvent and to isolate the product by sublimation (RB King, Organometallic Synthesis 1, 1965, pages 70 to 71, GMELIN, Handbuch der inorganic-Chemie, supplementary work on the 8th edition, Vol.
5, part 1, pages 359 to 367). It is also known to use cobalt chloride-hexaammoniacat or cobalt chloride / ammonia instead of cobalt chloride for the production of cobaltocene, tetrahydrofuran being required as a solvent here too (DE-PS 1 206897 and DE-PS 1 223 839).
All of these processes are relatively complex owing to the sublimation stages they contain, and there is a tendency that the use of ethers such as dimethoxyethane or tetrahydrofuran as solvents leads to the formation of dangerous peroxides. This can lead to very serious problems, especially in the case of large-scale production of cobaltocene.
The invention is based on the object of eliminating these disadvantages, i.e. to replace the sublimation with another isolation process.
According to the invention, this is achieved by using acetonitrile as the solvent.
The advantages of acetonitrile as a solvent are that it has relatively good dissolving properties when heated and, above all, that the resulting solution of cobaltocene in acetonitrile can be introduced directly into the manufacturing process for 2-picoline from acetonitrile and acetylene. The cobaltocene therefore no longer has to be isolated for the stated purpose.
If the use of cobaltocene as a catalyst for another 2-substituted pyridine is envisaged, the cobaltocene can also be isolated easily in larger batches for intermediate storage by crystallization from acetonitrile.
Appropriately, the procedure is as follows:
The required acetonitrile is placed in a suitable vessel which is equipped with a stirring device, thermometer, heating device, reflux condenser and gas inlet and outlet device and heated to 25 to 80 ° C., preferably to 50 to 60 ° C. Anhydrous Com12 is added in portions and the resulting solution is advantageously saturated with NH3 by passing it in.
The molar ratio between acetonitrile and CoCl is not critical. It is expediently 5 to 200 to 1, preferably 8.5 to 48 to 1. Instead of Com12, its hexaammoniacat, ie CoCl2. 6NH3 used - there is no need to saturate with NH3 - the molar ratio is advantageously 100 to 1.
The stoichiometric amount of Na-cyclopentadienyl is added and the immediate onset of NH3 formation is supported by gradually heating to reflux temperature.
After boiling at the above temperature for 1 to 2 hours, the mixture is cooled to 70 ° C. and the hot decanted cobaltocene solution is filtered. If this solution is used as a catalyst solution for the preparation of 2-picoline from acetonitrile and acetylene, it can be used directly but the cobaltocene as a catalyst for other purposes, the above filtrate is cooled to 0 C, the cobaltocen crystallizes out, can be isolated and dried in vacuo (0.01 Torr / 20 C).
By concentrating the mother liquor and recrystallizing again at 0 C, the yield can be significantly improved. The total yield amounts to 70 to 84% of theory, calculated on the CoCk used.
The following can be seen as a variant of the described procedure:
Instead of the acetonitrile, the mother liquor from a previous cobaltocene production is used as the solvent.
All operations are carried out in the absence of air and moisture in an argon or nitrogen atmosphere.
For example
A solution of 87.9 g of CoCh in 1.5 liters of acetonitrile prepared at 50 to 60 "C was saturated with NH3 at 20" C and then mixed with 121.5 g of sodium cyclopentadienyl with vigorous mixing. The onset of NH3 development was completed by heating to the reflux temperature. The mixture was allowed to settle at 70 ° C., the cobaltocene solution was decanted off and the residue was washed twice with 100 ml of acetonitrile. The precipitated cobaltocene could be separated from the solution cooled to 0 ° C. and dried in vacuo. Yield: 95.5 g of cobaltocene.
A further 11.7 g of cobaltocene could be obtained by concentrating the mother liquor to about 700 ml and allowing it to stand at 0 ° C. The yield was 83.7%, calculated on the CoCk.
Example 2
1.5 liters of mother liquor from a cobaltocene production according to Example 1 and 88.3 g of CoCl2 were saturated with NH3, and 124.1 g of sodium cyclopentadienyl were added. The whole was left to boil under reflux for 1 hour, the cobaltocene solution was decanted off, washed with fresh acetonitrile and, after crystallization, separation and drying, 105.4 g of cobaltocene were obtained.
The yield was 82%, calculated on the CoCk.
Example 3
20 g of CoCl2 6NH3 and 450 ml of acetonitrile were mixed with 15.4 g of sodium cyclopentadienyl and treated and worked up analogously to Example 1.
Yield 12.4 g cobaltocene.
The yield was 77.2%, based on the CoCl3 6NH3.
Example 4
15.3 g of CoCl2 and 300 ml of acetonitrile were mixed with 20.4 g
Sodium cyclopentadienyl added and treated and worked up analogously to Example 1.
Yield 15.6 g cobaltocene.
The yield was 70%, calculated on the CoCk.
Example 5
6.4 g of CoCl2 - 6NH3 in 110 g of acetonitrile were mixed with 4.8 g of sodium cyclopentadienyl and gradually heated to reflux temperature over 90 minutes until no more ammonia was released. The mixture was filtered directly into an autoclave with a stirrer at 70 to 75 ° C. and the filtration residue was washed twice with 110 g of hot acetonitrile. After closing, the autoclave was saturated with acetylene at 6 bar and heated to 200 ° C. Over the next 90 minutes, the acetylene pressure was gradually increased to 20 bar. After cooling, relaxing and fracturing. Distillation gave 549 g of 2-picoline, corresponding to 73% of theory.
