Polymeroder Faserabfälle einsetzen, was wirtschaftlich sehr interessant ist.

10. Use of the foamed balls according to claim 1 in the interior of tires, so that in the event of a loss of air pressure in the tire, the defective tire cannot sink onto the rim.
The invention relates to foamed spheres made of thermoplastics such as polyamide, polyester, polyethylene or polypropylene, and a method for producing such spheres.
The material of the balls is called thermoplastic in the description. The foamed spheres made of thermoplastics according to the invention have a diameter of 1 to 10 mm and a bulk density of 100 to 1000 g / l. In cross section, these spheres have a cell structure with a closed shell. These balls are preferably made of polyamide 6. Preferably, the foamed balls of the invention have a diameter of 3 to 5 mm and a bulk density of 250 to 700 g / l.
These foamed spheres according to the invention can be used in various fields of application. They are suitable for insulation purposes (heat and noise), e.g. in a double wall or the like. You can also use these balls as a filling, e.g. B. in diving suits or the like. A very special use is the use in car tires. The interior of the tire is partially filled with such balls, so that in the event of a loss of air pressure in the tire, the defective tire cannot sink onto the rim.
This list of areas of application is absolutely not exhaustive.
If the balls according to the invention are used in tires, they must have special properties, in particular the following: they should have a hardness of more than 90 Shore A and if they are under workload they must not lose more than 20% of their volume. Furthermore, the softening point must be over 150 "C.
If no other properties are required, e.g. Use polymer or fiber waste, which is economically very interesting.
The invention further relates to a method for producing these foamed spheres by adding a blowing agent to the thermoplastic and melting this mixture. The melt is pressed and cut immediately after being ejected, so that balls are formed which are transported away with cooling water and then separated from the water in a classic manner.
According to a further preferred embodiment of the invention, the polymer melt emerging from the nozzle plate is cooled by the cooling water only to such an extent that the rigid thermoplastic skin can be plastically deformed by the expanding propellant gas and a spherical shape can thereby form. This means that the larger balls you want to make, the lower the water temperature must be, and vice versa.
The melt, which was previously under high contact pressure, leaves the nozzle under a very low pressure, so that the blowing agent becomes effective. On the other hand, a thin, solidified polymer shell 2 (FIG. 1) is formed around the cut-off melt part due to the action of cooling water, which is impermeable to gas, but is still very plastic. The gas 3 within this shell forms the melt part, following a physical law, into a geometrically almost uniform sphere 1 with an optimal cell structure, as shown in the accompanying FIG. 2.
The blowing agent can either be added to the granulate in the thermoplastic before it is melted in the extruder, or added before it is discharged from the polymerization container or from the extruder.
The proportion of blowing agent is normally between 0.1 and 1% by weight based on the polymer.
An amount of more than 1% by weight makes it impossible to form a ball because the gas content is too high, and an amount of less than 0.1% by weight shows practically no foam effect.
Azodicarbonamide, which e.g. from BAYER under the name POROFOR ADC / M, or from FISONS Ltd. is sold under the name GENITRON AF 100. The latter is a white powder with a density of 0.5 g / ml, which contains 44 to 51% zinc. You can also use other blowing agents, e.g. B. liquid (Freon) or gaseous (CO2, N2).
The nozzle plate has a plurality of holes, e.g. 2 to 20 holes with a diameter of 1.5 to 5 mm.
The underwater pelletizer is equipped with several knives, the speed of which is selected so that if a drop of polymer has escaped from the nozzle plate, it is cut off by the nozzle. The diameter of the balls can be changed as desired by modifying the speed of the knives and the throughput of the polymer.
The pressure of the melt in front of the ejection nozzle is in the
generally between 20 and 80 bar, preferably close to 80 bar. The spheres produced in this way then solidify completely in the water and are transported onwards by the cooling water flow. The temperature of the water is preferably between 20 and 80 C.
Then you have to separate the water and the balls. You can operate in the classic way in two stages: You separate most of the water in a pre-cutter and then the rest in a separator, e.g. in a centrifuge, where you can then remove the finished balls. These balls are then ready for use.
The invention is explained in detail in the following examples.
example 1
0.5% blowing agent is powdered onto spin-dried polyamide 6 granules with a relative humidity of less than 0.09% and then transported into the extruder feed silo. The melting takes place in a three-zone spinning extruder with a screw diameter of 60 mm and an active screw length of 24 x 60 x 60 mm. Heating zones one to five have linearly increasing temperatures of 200 to 250 "C. The screw speed is 57 T / min, so that a throughput of 36 kg / h results. The melting temperature increases to a value of 265 C.
The screw conveys the melt at a pressure of 240 bar in a heated line to the distributor block, respectively.
to the nozzle plate of the underwater pelletizer (BAR MAG system), the function of which is assumed to be known.
The knife ring rotating in 64 "C warm cooling water with 1150 T / min has 24 knives and cuts the melt flowing out of the nozzle bores.
The cooling water circuit transports the cut polymer parts to a water pre-separator and then to a centrifuge, in which the residual water is removed.
Examples 2 to 7
According to Example 1, polyamide 6 balls with different amounts of blowing agent are produced. The diameter and bulk density of the balls obtained are noted in Table 1.
