PATENTANSPRÜCHE
1. Verfahren zur Herstellung von gegebenenfalls substituierten Thioxanthonen, wobei man das entsprechende o,o' Dihalogenbenzophenon mit einem Metallsulfid oder Metallhydrosulfid umsetzt, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass man die Reaktion in einem Zweiphasensystem in Gegenwart eines Phasentransferkatalysators durchführt.

Vorzugsweise setzt man mit einem Alkali- oder Erdalkalisulfid oder Alkali- oder Erdalkalihydrosulfid, vorzugsweise mit den Alkalisulfiden und vorzugsweise mit Natriumsulfid um. Die Umsetzung führt man in einem Zweiphasensystem durch, wobei sich die organische Ausgangsverbindung, d.h.
das o,o'-Dihalogenbenzophenon vorwiegend in der organischen Phase, und das Metallsulfid oder Metallhydrosulfid vorwiegend in wässriger oder fester Phase befindet. Die Reaktion wird durch Zugabe von Phasentransferkatalysatoren, sog. Oniumsalzen, vorzugsweise Ammonium- oder Phosphoniumsalzen, beschleunigt. Solche Oniumsalze sind an sich bekannt, wie z.B. quaternäre Ammoniumsalze oder quaternäre Phosphoniumsalze wie Triäthylbenzylamoniumchlorid, Methyltricaprylammoniumchlorid, Methyltrioctylammoniumchlorid oder Hexadecyltributylphosphoniumbromid.
Vorzugsweise verwendet man quaternäre Verbindungen mit grösseren Kationen wie Tetrabutylammonium, Tetradodecylammonium, Tetrabutylphosphonium u.a.m. Die Wahl des organischen, in Wasser weitgehend unlöslichen Lösungsmittels ist nicht kritisch. Es soll aber für die organische Ausgangssubstanz und für die Oniumverbindung eine genügende Löslichkeit aufweisen. Bevorzugt ist ein Zweiphasen-Flüssig Flüssig-System, z.B. Benzol/Wasser, Toluol/Wasser und verwandte Systeme.
Die Konzentration des Oniumsalzes ist nicht kritisch. Man verwendet vorzugsweise 1 bis 100 mol%, vorzugsweise 1 bis 20 mol% des Oniumsalzes berechnet auf das o,o'-Dihalogenbenzophenon.
Das Sulfid- oder Hydrosulfidanion in der wässrigen oder festen Phase verwendet man mindestens in aequimolarer Menge, vorzugsweise im Überschuss von vorzugsweise 10-20 mol%, wobei die Konzentration in der wässrigen Phase vorzugsweise in der Nähe der Sättigungsgrenze liegt.
Die derart hergestellten Thioxanthonverbindungen kann man für alle bekannten Zwecke, beispielsweise als Photoinitiatoren im Verfahren zum Photopolymerisieren von photopolymerisierbaren Substraten verwenden.
Die folgenden Beispiele illustrieren die Erfindung.
Beispiel
In einem Sulfierkolben wurden unter Stickstoff 14,3 g 2,2',5-Trichlorbenzophenon, 40 ml Benzol, 7,4 Natrium Sulfidtrihydrat, 20 ml 50prozentige NaOH Lösung und 5,1 g Hexadecyl-tributylphosphoniumbromid bei einer Badtemperatur von 70"C zusammen gerührt. Nach 4 Stunden wurde noch 1 g Hexadecyl-tributylphosphoniumbromid zugegeben.
Nach 2 Stunden weiterem Rühren wurde die Reaktionsmischung abgekühlt, der ausgefallene Niederschlag abgesaugt und mit Methanol und Wasser gewaschen. Es wurden 8,6 g 2-Chlorthioxanthon vom Smp. 153-154"C erhalten.
In analoger Weise stellt man die in Tabelle 1 aufgeführten Verbindungen her.

The reaction is preferably carried out with an alkali or alkaline earth metal sulfide or alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydrosulfide, preferably with the alkali metal sulfides and preferably with sodium sulfide. The reaction is carried out in a two-phase system, the organic starting compound, i.e.
the o, o'-dihalobenzophenone predominantly in the organic phase, and the metal sulfide or metal hydrosulfide is predominantly in the aqueous or solid phase. The reaction is accelerated by adding phase transfer catalysts, so-called onium salts, preferably ammonium or phosphonium salts. Such onium salts are known per se, e.g. quaternary ammonium salts or quaternary phosphonium salts such as triethylbenzylamonium chloride, methyltricaprylammonium chloride, methyltrioctylammonium chloride or hexadecyltributylphosphonium bromide.
It is preferred to use quaternary compounds with larger cations such as tetrabutylammonium, tetradodecylammonium, tetrabutylphosphonium and others. The choice of the organic solvent, which is largely insoluble in water, is not critical. However, it should have sufficient solubility for the organic starting substance and for the onium compound. Preferred is a two-phase liquid-liquid system, e.g. Benzene / water, toluene / water and related systems.
The concentration of the onium salt is not critical. 1 to 100 mol%, preferably 1 to 20 mol%, of the onium salt, based on the o, o'-dihalobenzophenone, is preferably used.
The sulfide or hydrosulfide anion in the aqueous or solid phase is used at least in an equimolar amount, preferably in an excess of preferably 10-20 mol%, the concentration in the aqueous phase preferably being close to the saturation limit.
The thioxanthone compounds prepared in this way can be used for all known purposes, for example as photoinitiators in the process for photopolymerizing photopolymerizable substrates.
