Aufl. (1974), Bd. 7, S. 597].

6. The method according to any one of claims 1 to 5, characterized in that one carries out the reaction of the l-aminoanthraquinone with the brominating agent at temperatures of 50 to 150 "C.
The following processes are known for the preparation of l-amino2,4-dibromoanthraquinone: a) Bromination of l-aminoanthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid in an aqueous solvent (J. Chem. Soc., 1939, p. 816; US Pat. No. 2169196) ; b) bromination of l-aminoanthraquinone in an inert organic solvent (Ber., Vol. 49, p. 2165; GB-PS 1 239 778); c) Dissolving l-aminoanthraquinone in sulfuric acid, pouring the solution into water and precipitating the 1-aminoanthraquinone in finely divided form and subsequent bromination in an aqueous medium [PB Report No. 86 139, p.6; Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, 4th ed. (1974), Vol. 7, p. 597].
l-Amino-2,4-dibromoanthraquinone can be hydrolyzed to 1-amino-2bromo-4-hydroxyanthraquinone. This is an intermediate product for the production of dyes.
The method for dibrominating l-aminoanthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid has the following disadvantages: The method comprises two stages, namely the sulfonation of l-aminoanthraquinone and the dibromination of the l-aminoanthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid obtained. Since the dibromination is carried out in an aqueous medium, the dibromo compound obtained must be filtered off and dried before it is subjected to the hydrolysis.
The process for dibrominating 1-aminoanthraquinone in an inert organic solvent has the following disadvantages: The solvent used for dibromination is different from the solvent used in the hydrolysis of the dibromo compound obtained.
The compound must therefore be isolated from the inert organic solvent by filtration or by extraction with sulfuric acid. This complicates the process.
The process of dibrominating finely divided 1-aminoanthraquinone in an aqueous medium has the following disadvantages: To disperse the l-aminoanthraquinone, this compound must be dissolved in sulfuric acid and the solution obtained must be pressed into a large volume of water.
The dibromo compound must be isolated before it is hydrolysed to l-amino-2-bromo-4-hydroxyanthraquinone. Filtration and drying stages are therefore required.
The dibromo compound obtained in this process contains 2 to 4 percent by weight of unreacted 1-amino-2-bromoanthraquinone, since l-aminoanthraquinone is reacted with bromine in suspension and not in solution in an aqueous medium. This monobromine compound represents an undesirable contamination of the product in the subsequent step, for example hydrolysis.
The invention has for its object to provide an improved process for the preparation of l-amino-2,4-dibromoanthraquinone, in which the l-amino-2,4-dibromoanthraquinone is obtained in high purity and yield, so that this compound for hydrolysis to 1-amino-2-bromo-4-hydroxyanthraquinone does not need to be isolated. This object is achieved by the invention.
The invention thus relates to the subject matter characterized in the claims.
In the process according to the invention, l-aminoanthraquinone is reacted in concentrated sulfuric acid with a brominating agent to give l-amino-2,4-dibromoanthraquinone.
The method according to the invention is further explained in the drawings. 1 and 2 show the change in the composition of the reaction mixture as a function of the time during the preparation of 1-amino-2,4-di-bromoanthraquinone according to Example 1 of the present invention and according to the comparative example (PB Report Nur. 86139, p .6). For this purpose, samples are taken at intervals that are examined by gas chromatography. The weight ratios of the components contained in the reaction products are given in percent area. In these figures, the curves A, B, C and D mean 1-amino-2,4-dibromoanthraquinone, 1-amino-4-bromoanthraquinone, 1-amino-2-bromoanthraquinone and 1-aminoanthraquinone.
In the process according to the invention, 80 to 100 percent by weight concentrated sulfuric acid, in particular 85 to 98 percent by weight concentrated sulfuric acid, is preferably used for the dibromination. If the reaction mixture obtained during the dibromination is to be subjected to the hydrolysis immediately without isolating the l-amino-2,4-dibromoanthraquinone obtained, preferably at least 85% by weight sulfuric acid is used. The dibromination can also be carried out in sulfuric acid at a concentration of less than 80 percent by weight, but this is not technically advantageous since large amounts of, for example, fuming sulfuric acid or sulfur trioxide are then required for the hydrolysis to adjust the concentration of the sulfuric acid.
At a sulfuric acid concentration above 98 percent by weight, the reaction rate slows down and the formation of by-products increases.
Sulfuric acid is preferably used in 1 to 8 times the amount by weight of 1-aminoanthraquinone. Bromine, hydrogen bromide or an alkali metal bromide is preferably used as the brominating agent. Bromine is particularly preferred. Bromine is preferably used in an amount of 1.0 to 3 moles per mole of 1-aminoanthraquinone. The use of more than 3 moles is uneconomical. The reaction temperature during dibromination depends on the sulfuric acid concentration. The temperature can be reduced with increasing concentration of sulfuric acid. Usually the dibromination is carried out at temperatures from 50 to 150 ° C. Technically advantageous
the dropwise addition of bromine at temperatures from 80 to 130 ° C. The reaction time depends on the sulfuric acid concentration and the reaction temperature. It is generally 4 to 15 hours. The dibromination can be carried out in the presence of a conventional bromination catalyst. Examples of these catalysts are Iodine, potassium iodide and zinc chloride An organic solvent can also be used to increase the solubility of the bromine, specific examples are acetic acid or propionic acid or inert organic solvents such as nitrobenzene.
In the process according to the invention, the l-aminoanthraquinone used is present in solution in concentrated sulfuric acid. Therefore, the l-amino-2,4-dibromoanthraquinone is obtained in high purity. Only very small amounts of l-amino-2-bromoanthraquinone and l-amino-4-bromoanthraquinone are formed. After the dibromination has ended, the reaction mixture can be diluted. The precipitated product can be filtered off and washed.
In the usual bromination of finely divided l-aminoanthraquinone in an aqueous medium, the proportion of 1-amino-2,4-dibromoanthraquinone formed is already very high compared to 1-amino-2-bromoanthraquinone. In the bromination according to the process according to the invention, however, it is important that the proportion of l-amino-2,4-dibromothraquinone in addition to l-amino-4-bromoanthraquinone is significantly greater than that in the other cases, in particular if sulfuric acid has a higher concentration is used.
This difference is shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. It can be seen from the figures that the bromination in an aqueous dispersion medium proceeds by a different reaction mechanism than the bromination in concentrated sulfuric acid.
